Aging for Beginners is the 7th book by the accomplished Zen teacher and practitioner, Ezra Bayda. Together with his long-time practice partner and wife, Elizabeth Hamilton with whom he runs the Zen Center of San Diego, Ezra sounds out some important themes to help us all navigate the sometime daunting territory of our own aging. Dear Ezra (pardon my informality),The book Aging for Beginners is one of the most helpful books I have ever read. I am 73 and dealing with a cold virus.In the scheme of things, not the most serious, but because of your advice, I am using this illness to help me work with myattachments to comfort and control, let alone to my body. Your phrase "inwardly free" was so helpful to me in describing what I am working toward.This morning, after several days of not reading but just pondering, I felt compelled to open to where I had left off - page 152.I've been puzzling about why during this illness the only time I feel satisfied is when I am working on my memoir about my ten years in psychoanalysis. It seemed odd until I read your idea about making meaning. That is what I'm doing and it helps me to know this.I do hope you receive this and accept my gratitude for this book and your courage to continue working on it when you felt you weren't quite ready. Sometimes I feel that about my memoir writing but feel called to continue as I think I have insights to offer.Thank you SO much! Oh - the other thing is your recommendation to meditate for longer was a challenge I took. I've been meditating with Susan Piver and the Open Heart Project for several years and usually had been sitting for 20 minutes. If I had to choose only 10 books to take with me wherever I go, this would be one of them. I love and learn from all of Ezra Bayda's books, but this is my favorite. He is never above the fray. His struggles are Everyman's struggles. He presents Zen in the deepest yet most accessible way. This book is certainly about aging, but I have given it to young adults and they resonate with it. A very important book!

Anyone can read this book and benefit from Ezra Bayda's lucid, on-point, and humbly offered insights, even if aging is not their particular concern. Offering a clear account of the difficulties that come with older age, Bayda places these in the wider context of our life, our unexamined mental habits, and the annoying fact that we're not here forever. He never sugarcoats anything. He fully acknowledges that working with fear, loss, pain, despair, loneliness, feeling marginalized, etc. can be challenging—but in a good way: this is actually a very uplifting book. Throughout “Aging for Beginners” are meditations and practices that anyone can do—not just meditation types—and they bring with them a practicality and accessibility that I found enormously encouraging. A book for all who are aging, or think they might be in the future. ;-)

This is the first book I’ve read that really speaks clearly about both the difficulties and the benefits of aging. Ezra helps us to lean into our fear and pain as we face the reality of impermanence and in so doing he helps us open to the joys of connecting in this fleeting experience of life. Seniors will find comfort in having a companion guide for this chapter of life but all age groups could benefit from the teachings.

"...there is a big difference between the thought, 'this is painful' and 'this is terrible.'" For me, this illustrates the precision and clarity in Ezra Bayda's book. His direct and personal communication regarding how to live with more awareness and acceptance is invaluable and is combined with helpful techniques. I recommend it.

so many excellent tips and suggestions and meditations to be used to accept and embrace all the facets of aging; physical decline and pain, loss of a loved one, aloneness. and not only was it practical and spiritual but it is written by a man in his mid-70's who has had his share of surgeries and cancer and complications and chronic pain. so everything he wrote about comes from experience. wonderful book.

I thought this book was an excellent reference for a beginning artist interested in fluid artistry ”how-tos”. I loved the photos and Rick’s explanations and descriptions. However, I lowered my rating for this book because I bought another book by Rick Cheadle sold here on Amazon, and under a *different* but admittedly similar name. I found it to be *identical* in every way exept for the annoying formatting in the other book. For those of you who buy a few books on topics you are researching, you won't need to purchase the book entitled ”Fluid Art Mastery: 8 Steps to Being a Paint Pouring Artist” if you purchase this one. And I do recommend this one for newbie pour artists, as it is very good. I just feel a little annoyed that I am having to return a book that is exactly the same as this one.

EVERYthing you need to know about paint pouring. This book had it all: From buying supplies, to SELLING your finished project. Tons of info, lots of demo photos that you can actually see .... and ESPECIALLY lots of samples of his art at the back. BTW if you want to see the photos at a larger size, hold your finger on the picture till a pop-up window with ZOOM shows up and click on it. You will have the photo fill up the screen to see more detail.

This book was informative but stopped being useful about as abruptly as it began. The mixing recipes are really only 2 types. Expensive and Budget and just 1 of each. The techniques used were all ones I had guessed or experimented on my own. Included was a hammering method which just looks and sounds absurd and messy. Overall, I wish I had this book when I first started so as to save myself some headaches and money in mixing the paints. This book is for the beginner, if you have been pouring for a while, even a month, you wont learn anything.

What a GREAT reference tool! Pics are awesome, easy to see details, yet book size is perfect to sit on outdoor end table easily. We recently moved to the desert southwest so we are seeing plants and wildlife weve never seen before!! Now we have something to tell us what that bird... bug... plant is! I just love it! It would be a great value at twice the price, honestly!The quality of paper used is really good too. It is somewhere between a hard cover and a paper back. Inside pages are like a thick magazine type paper. Very nice quality. Especially for this price!

We just moved to Colorado from the east coast. My wife is a plant and wildlife aficionado and was frustrated that she was seeing things out here that we never saw on the east coast - and couldn't identify them. (Great move, BTW, will never go back east!) I bought her this book so she could quit asking me what the heck this or that was. ;-) Worth every penny. Besides that, it's well constructed and durable. Bright, clear photos.

I borrowed this book from my sister the last time we went to the southwest on vacation, and it’s a nice, compact field guide to the plants and animals of the southwest deserts. So I bought one to toss into my backpack, since I wander around being a biology nerd on vacations, and we are going again this fall.Great little book to have in hand if you just have to know what lizard that was sleeping in your boot, or what cactus you just sat on.

I like that this book covers animals and plants as well as birds. Unfortunately, I started using the book AFTER I downloaded a bird identifying app for my phone. The app is easier than hunting through pages looking for the bird I saw. Still, it's a great reference and has information about the National Parks in the Southwest. I've been to some of the National Parks reviewed in the book, and the reviews are accurate and informative.

Exactly what I needed. Moving to Arizona and wanted to know what was around me. Easy to read, pictures were clear. Plants, birds, constellations and of course creepy crawlers.

Loved this book. Read cover to cover prior to a trip out to Utah and Arizona where I went camping at several national parks. That prepared me for some of what I would see. I then brought it with me on the trip and was able to look up things as I went along, especially flowers, trees and birds. There were certainly things I saw that weren't in the book, but overall I found it extremely handy, so much so I got the book for the region I actually live in (Southeast) and plan to order the one for the region where I grew up (New England).

I ordered this book for several children to use to know the names of local birds and lizards and was not disappointed.Easy to read and find alphabetical listings, colorful and plentiful. The children all under the age of ten continued to read it after we returned from our wanderings and I appreciate the care with which the authors chose to reveal a lovely hand held book that is easy to pack and throw around in the car. We enjoy it.

Spending the winter months in AZ and wanted a bird book to help identify some of the many species down here. This book is more than just a 'bird' book - I also found a great preserve in Nevada, has help with tracking common animals in the SW, has pictures & descriptions of many cactus and other flora & fauna. Well worth the price - lots of information.
