A Little Piece of Light: A Memoir of Hope, Prison, and a Life Unbound, by Donna Hylton Kristine Gasbarre

Review

"The treatment of each unique child is the true measure of the state of the world. Donna Hylton was punished for being born female, black, and brilliant--yet she survived to create her own life. A Little Piece of Light will tell you just how fragile--and how indestructible--the human spirit can be."―Gloria Steinem"Donna Hylton's painful yet liberating memoir will certainly be transformative for many who read her words. As a survivor of sexual abuse and violence--inside and outside prison--she tells the whole truth of her experience, including her deep regret for the moments that she's harmed others and her passionate commitment to co-creating a justice system that acknowledges the little piece of light that shines within us no matter who we are, what we've done, or what has been done to us."―Michelle Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of The New Jim Crow"Donna Hylton is a light warrior, an inspiration, a survivor, a profound storyteller, and an important teacher for our times."―Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic"[Donna Hylton's] life stands as a case study illustrating how prison reform efforts and support for women in abusive situations can transform individual lives and society.... Since her release, Hylton has continued her fight for women who have no voice. Her story stands as a harrowing, yet powerful, picture of what's possible when women escape brutality and encounter hope, even in the most unlikely of places."―Associated Press"Donna has a remarkable capacity for turning pain into power. She's focused, determined, present, thoughtful, passionate, and tireless. She's an invaluable asset to us all."―Rosario Dawson, actress, writer, singer, and activist"Donna Hylton's A Little Piece of Light reveals her life journey in an exquisitely written memoir. Donna suffered so long before finding a place to belong. It brings into question how America criminalizes the trauma of poor women. This book is a real page-turner that has you sitting on the edge of your seat.... A must read."―Susan Burton, author of Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight Against Incarcerated Women"I first met Donna Hylton at Riverside Church when she had just been released from prison after serving 27 years, and she is an unforgettable presence. In this riveting book Donna bravely and honestly does the difficult work of reconciling the harm she suffered and the harm she caused, and the reasons both are important. A Little Piece of Light is a gripping account of promises kept or broken, showing the incredible resilience and triumph of women in the face of neglect and violence. Donna Hylton's story is both wrenching and life-affirming, and essential reading to anyone who cares about women, safety and justice."―Piper Kerman, author of Orange Is the New Black"Donna Hylton proves it's not where you start but where you finish. In her searing narrative, A Little Piece of Light, she recounts spending more than 25 years at New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for kidnapping and second-degree murder. How she got there will rock you to your core."―Essence"Intimate and disturbing, the book reveals the ways women are silenced and victimized in society, and it also tells the inspiring story of how one woman survived a prison nightmare to go on to help other incarcerated women 'speak out about the violence in their lives.' A wrenching memoir of overcoming seemingly insurmountable abuse and finding fulfillment."―Kirkus Reviews"Gripping.... [A Little Piece of Light] is a meditation on redemption and learning to love and forgive."―Booklist

Donna Hylton's story is both heartbreaking and hopeful. The first part of this memoir chronicles years of abuse. It seems every male figure in her life was someone who could not be trusted, and Donna was constantly trying to find refuge from the people she should have been able to trust. When she was sent to prison for her minor role in a crime, Donna was able to turn something awful into something wonderful as she now advocates for other victims.Writing this memoir must have been somewhat cathartic for Donna Hylton, yet I also got the sense that she had already come to terms with her life story long before she set about writing this memoir. Her story, her ability to rise above her circumstances, to find the good in life, to advocate for others - is simply amazing. This is not an easy book to read, yet it is one I will be recommending to everyone.

I spent 10 years at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility with Donna Hylton and because of her strength of true character and bravery and that of the other mentors that she mentions in her book, I was able to find my way in a system that does not support rehabilitation. Because of Donna and the people who truly care about prison reform, I was able to forgive myself and move on in my life from a victim to a victor. We are not our mistakes and wrong decisions in life. This book has proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that everything does happen for a reason. Donna suffered great pain in her younger life but God never gives us more than we can handle. She has found her true purpose in life, which is to teach people who have not experienced what she and millions of us have, being punished for being on the road less traveled.......... She is a warrior and I am proud to call her friend. This is a must read.

The first half of this book is very hard to experience. It covers years of abuse, sexual emotional and spiritual. The irony is when she finally lands in prison, she experiences the most love and nurturing that she’s ever known in her whole life. I had the honor of knowing & working with her at Bedford Hills (I worked at the College Program of which she was a part). And I am amazed at the person she has become. For anyone who sincerely wants to learn about rehabilitation within the prison system, this is a book that must be read.

Thank you for writing this book, for sharing your pain so that others may grow. The first half of this book is unrelenting as Hylton recounts the many times she was victimized by people who were supposed to love and protect her. Hylton's story needs to be told, not because of the incredible traumas she endured, but because she found her voice despite the abuses. She was able to learn and thrive, serving as an inspiration to anyone who reads this book. It is a story beautifully told, too. Hylton recounts her childhood with control and delicacy. This creates an important experience for the reader, who is not being told what to feel only what happened.I have already purchased several copies as gifts and hope that this book one day becomes required reading in schools and universities. What a selfless, powerful act: to tell your story because you know it will help others. Once again, thank you, Donna Hylton.

My heart weeps for not only Miss Donna, but for Adrienne, her daughter and all victims, especially children of violence and sexual abuse.Much is to be said in that suffering and pain can be a catalyst for positive change. It is unimaginable that those so young and innocent can endure with such courage, strength and tenacity under the circumstances described in this book. What a ray of light and hope - a profound gift Miss Donna has given the world, particularly to those incarcerated.

I heard of the book from the interview Ms. Donna gave on the Breakfast morning radio show. As soon as I got to work i ordered the book online. I literally cried out loud while reading. There was so many emotions because the book takes you on a journey from the time Donna is a very young child until an adult. Thank Donna for sharing your story and educating the world about the violence women and children endure and How one can overcome with education, therapy, a good support system but most importantly with true love.

I have been enlighted empowered you think you struggle and then you read Donna's story. I wept I screamed I prayed I jumped for joy. Donna you did a supreme job and have inspired me to continue to have faith and a voice. Thank you for allowing me to further know you now through you authentic transparent words of rebirth

...definitely a good read, I appreciate Donna Hylton for sharing her story. After reading her life between these pages the three takeaways that resonate with me; 1 Several of the men in her life took advantage of her vulnerability. 2 We should listen to young people when they have something to tell us, or at a minimum investigate their claims. 3 I love the part of the book where she says "I truly have transformed - not into a different person, but like my thesis subject James Baldwin, I was just acting as the "real me" whom I know I've been all along." Thank you for sharing.

The Wishing Tree, by Roseanne Thong

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-8–Ming and his grandmother have a tradition of visiting the Wishing Tree each Lunar New Year. Their wishes are written on special paper, tied to an orange, and tossed up into the branches of the tree. Ming's grandmother cautions him to wish thoughtfully, and following her advice, he realizes the fulfillment of all of his wishes except for one very important one: that his grandmother recover from a grave illness. Many years pass before Ming returns to the tree. He comes to forgive it when a friend points out that it has granted the wish his grandmother had made for him every year–that he be happy. Now the paper he offers to the tree is not a wish but rather a note of thanks. Thong's narrative voice has a gentle and musical quality that will lure readers into the book's pages, as well as into the landscape of this lovely little corner of China. Children will see in fastidious detail the beautiful wishing paper with its Chinese symbols and English translations. The rendering of the people is also superb. The exquisite art is done on watercolor paper with acrylics, which results in an unusual and vivid effect. A template for wishing paper is included in the back of the book. The lessons and observations in The Wishing Tree are ageless, and the book offers many opportunities for discussion.–Corrina Austin, Locke's Public School, St. Thomas, Ontario, Canada Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. PreS-Gr. 2. When Ming is five years old, his grandmother takes him to the Wishing Tree, where, like others in their Hong Kong village, they write wishes on pieces of paper weighted down by oranges and throw them into the branches of a giant banyan tree. Ming and Grandmother continue their annual visits to the tree until Grandmother grows ill. Bitter when his wish for Grandmother's recovery isn't granted, Ming avoids the tree until, years later, he returns to the village and acknowledges the happiness the tree brought. Although the simple, moving story is an excellent choice for Lunar New Year read-alouds and will work well to open class discussions about cultural traditions, it will also appeal throughout the year. Sentimental without being saccharine, it illustrates how traditions can help us voice our deepest wishes and emotions, and its vibrant acrylic paintings of the glorious tree abloom with wishes and fruit, which will show well to a crowd of young listeners, extend the tale's reassuring sense of hope. An author's note describes the true events that inspired the story. Gillian EngbergCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I absolutely love that this story is based upon a real Banyan "Wishing Tree" in a small village called Lam Tsuen in Hong Kong, and that there are other smaller ones among Hong Kong's countryside. As if the story wasn't beautiful enough, the author took a lot of time explaining about wishing trees and how they are either banyan or camphor trees because these kinds of trees because they have aerial roots that curve & twist into unsual shapes that seem to look magical! She then goes on to tell her reader tells us that people come all though out the year to toss their wishes onto the wishing trees branches, but the majority of the people come during their Lunar New Year. She also speaks of the Ng Bo Dip which means "5 Treasures Piles" in Cantonese that the wishes are written. The brightly colored red & gold papers are then tied to a Mandarin Orange and thrown high into the branches of the wishing tree. I bet it's a beautiful sight! The author also includes a directions on how to make your very own Ng Bo Dip and also includes a black & white copy for the reader to photocopy, color and cut out!A definate treasure to have in your home library!

Good children's book as part of classroom lesson on Chinese New Year, students can use some of their predicting, visualization, and inferring skills.

The boy Ming is disappointed in the wishing tree introduced to him by his grandmother when the tree fails to give him his wish that his aged grandmother survive her illness. But after a time when he does not go to it anymore, he comes near it again when a group of friends invite him to go with them. In talking with his friends and a nearby vendor, Ming realizes that the tree granted his grandmother's greatest wish for him--that he be happy. The simple tale is based on a real tree in a village in Hong Kong. The author Thong with bright pictures by McLennan describe how the Chinese write their wishes on pieces of paper, and toss these into the branches of the tree. Following the tale, the author gives directions on how young readers can follow this practice for themselves with their own wishing tree.

This book narrates how Tony Mendez, a CIA agent, managed to rescue six American diplomats who were hiding in Tehran after the embassy was taken. And that’s pretty much, there’s not a lot to add. What annoyed me the most, was a feeling I had once I was done with the book: the feeling that the whole 310 pages-long story could have been told in 50. The book is plagued with personal anecdotes and references of past CIA operations not related at all with the exfiltration from Tehran. In fact, the description in the back cover summarizes perfectly what happens in the book. The book description in Goodreads, is pretty much the book itself: “…six Americans escaped the embassy and hid within a city roiling with suspicion and fear. A top-level CIA officer named Antonio Mendez devised an ingenious yet incredibly risky plan to rescue them before they were detected). The rest are places, names, dates and details. I didn’t like that the author, whenever he introduced a new character, includes a long (sometimes interesting, sometimes boring as hell) description of how they met, when had they worked before and under what circumstances, and a lot of unrelated details. Another thing that really bothered me: Mendez bragging about how no one in the world could had done a better job than him using humble sentences such as “… an internal nomination for the top fifty officers in the CIA’s first fifty years. Amazingly, I was selected as one of them”.Anyway, the book has a fast pace and the author offers a good recollection of events. I was happy to know that I was reading how the CIA actually works and not how an author believes the CIA works.Even though I didn’t like many things about this book, I did enjoy reading it, because of the events and the historical facts and not because of the narration nor the way the book is written. I believe the next time that I have nothing to do, watching Ben Affleck’s Argo, will be a good idea.

I read the book and saw the movie. Tony Mendez is a true life "James Bond". What was fascinating was how ordinary Mr. Mendez makes himself sound like -a wife and kids in the suburbs, an art studio etc. However, after reading the book, you realize how extraordinary he is. Think about how dangerous it was for an American CIA agent to go into Iran at that time or any time since then. In fact in was more dangerous than going into Moscow during the Cold War. In Moscow, you would likely be thrown out of the country but not kiled. In the the movie you see Ben Affleck take off his wedding ring before he goes. The book explains that if you were caught, you wanted your captors to think you were single. Imagine the implications. At the same time the sheer audacity of the cover story was something that you wouldn't believe could come out of a government agency. The movie over dramatizes the events that occur to make it a more interesting story; but what makes this caper so successful in reality was how boring it really was. The elaborate Hollywood backstory was necessary both in case the Iranians checked, but also to sell a sceptical White House on trying it and then to sell the hidden Americans that they could actually pull it off. Part of the message here is that disguise is more than makeup, it is the attitude to support it and the backstory was necessary to make people believe it was real. In many ways this was a true "Mission Impossible" mission in the spirit of the TV series. The intersection between Hollywood and the spy world was also amazing. While there wasn't as much action as there would be in a movie ( or in the movie Argo) the reality was every bit as dangerous and what distinguishes a true professional is pulling off without triggering any suspicion. The cooperation of the Canadians was also extraordinary. They actually held a secret session of parliament to allow the Americans to use false Canadian pasports (but only for the 6 refugee Americans, Mr. Mendez as a CiA agent had to supply his own fake Canadian passport). It is details like this that make this book so interesting for me.
