Review

"The treatment of each unique child is the true measure of the state of the world. Donna Hylton was punished for being born female, black, and brilliant--yet she survived to create her own life. A Little Piece of Light will tell you just how fragile--and how indestructible--the human spirit can be."―Gloria Steinem"Donna Hylton's painful yet liberating memoir will certainly be transformative for many who read her words. As a survivor of sexual abuse and violence--inside and outside prison--she tells the whole truth of her experience, including her deep regret for the moments that she's harmed others and her passionate commitment to co-creating a justice system that acknowledges the little piece of light that shines within us no matter who we are, what we've done, or what has been done to us."―Michelle Alexander, New York Times bestselling author of The New Jim Crow"Donna Hylton is a light warrior, an inspiration, a survivor, a profound storyteller, and an important teacher for our times."―Elizabeth Gilbert, New York Times bestselling author of Eat, Pray, Love and Big Magic"[Donna Hylton's] life stands as a case study illustrating how prison reform efforts and support for women in abusive situations can transform individual lives and society.... Since her release, Hylton has continued her fight for women who have no voice. Her story stands as a harrowing, yet powerful, picture of what's possible when women escape brutality and encounter hope, even in the most unlikely of places."―Associated Press"Donna has a remarkable capacity for turning pain into power. She's focused, determined, present, thoughtful, passionate, and tireless. She's an invaluable asset to us all."―Rosario Dawson, actress, writer, singer, and activist"Donna Hylton's A Little Piece of Light reveals her life journey in an exquisitely written memoir. Donna suffered so long before finding a place to belong. It brings into question how America criminalizes the trauma of poor women. This book is a real page-turner that has you sitting on the edge of your seat.... A must read."―Susan Burton, author of Becoming Ms. Burton: From Prison to Recovery to Leading the Fight Against Incarcerated Women"I first met Donna Hylton at Riverside Church when she had just been released from prison after serving 27 years, and she is an unforgettable presence. In this riveting book Donna bravely and honestly does the difficult work of reconciling the harm she suffered and the harm she caused, and the reasons both are important. A Little Piece of Light is a gripping account of promises kept or broken, showing the incredible resilience and triumph of women in the face of neglect and violence. Donna Hylton's story is both wrenching and life-affirming, and essential reading to anyone who cares about women, safety and justice."―Piper Kerman, author of Orange Is the New Black"Donna Hylton proves it's not where you start but where you finish. In her searing narrative, A Little Piece of Light, she recounts spending more than 25 years at New York's Bedford Hills Correctional Facility for kidnapping and second-degree murder. How she got there will rock you to your core."―Essence"Intimate and disturbing, the book reveals the ways women are silenced and victimized in society, and it also tells the inspiring story of how one woman survived a prison nightmare to go on to help other incarcerated women 'speak out about the violence in their lives.' A wrenching memoir of overcoming seemingly insurmountable abuse and finding fulfillment."―Kirkus Reviews"Gripping.... [A Little Piece of Light] is a meditation on redemption and learning to love and forgive."―Booklist

Donna Hylton's story is both heartbreaking and hopeful. The first part of this memoir chronicles years of abuse. It seems every male figure in her life was someone who could not be trusted, and Donna was constantly trying to find refuge from the people she should have been able to trust. When she was sent to prison for her minor role in a crime, Donna was able to turn something awful into something wonderful as she now advocates for other victims.Writing this memoir must have been somewhat cathartic for Donna Hylton, yet I also got the sense that she had already come to terms with her life story long before she set about writing this memoir. Her story, her ability to rise above her circumstances, to find the good in life, to advocate for others - is simply amazing. This is not an easy book to read, yet it is one I will be recommending to everyone.

I spent 10 years at Bedford Hills Correctional Facility with Donna Hylton and because of her strength of true character and bravery and that of the other mentors that she mentions in her book, I was able to find my way in a system that does not support rehabilitation. Because of Donna and the people who truly care about prison reform, I was able to forgive myself and move on in my life from a victim to a victor. We are not our mistakes and wrong decisions in life. This book has proven to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that everything does happen for a reason. Donna suffered great pain in her younger life but God never gives us more than we can handle. She has found her true purpose in life, which is to teach people who have not experienced what she and millions of us have, being punished for being on the road less traveled.......... She is a warrior and I am proud to call her friend. This is a must read.

The first half of this book is very hard to experience. It covers years of abuse, sexual emotional and spiritual. The irony is when she finally lands in prison, she experiences the most love and nurturing that she’s ever known in her whole life. I had the honor of knowing & working with her at Bedford Hills (I worked at the College Program of which she was a part). And I am amazed at the person she has become. For anyone who sincerely wants to learn about rehabilitation within the prison system, this is a book that must be read.

Thank you for writing this book, for sharing your pain so that others may grow. The first half of this book is unrelenting as Hylton recounts the many times she was victimized by people who were supposed to love and protect her. Hylton's story needs to be told, not because of the incredible traumas she endured, but because she found her voice despite the abuses. She was able to learn and thrive, serving as an inspiration to anyone who reads this book. It is a story beautifully told, too. Hylton recounts her childhood with control and delicacy. This creates an important experience for the reader, who is not being told what to feel only what happened.I have already purchased several copies as gifts and hope that this book one day becomes required reading in schools and universities. What a selfless, powerful act: to tell your story because you know it will help others. Once again, thank you, Donna Hylton.

My heart weeps for not only Miss Donna, but for Adrienne, her daughter and all victims, especially children of violence and sexual abuse.Much is to be said in that suffering and pain can be a catalyst for positive change. It is unimaginable that those so young and innocent can endure with such courage, strength and tenacity under the circumstances described in this book. What a ray of light and hope - a profound gift Miss Donna has given the world, particularly to those incarcerated.

I heard of the book from the interview Ms. Donna gave on the Breakfast morning radio show. As soon as I got to work i ordered the book online. I literally cried out loud while reading. There was so many emotions because the book takes you on a journey from the time Donna is a very young child until an adult. Thank Donna for sharing your story and educating the world about the violence women and children endure and How one can overcome with education, therapy, a good support system but most importantly with true love.

I have been enlighted empowered you think you struggle and then you read Donna's story. I wept I screamed I prayed I jumped for joy. Donna you did a supreme job and have inspired me to continue to have faith and a voice. Thank you for allowing me to further know you now through you authentic transparent words of rebirth

...definitely a good read, I appreciate Donna Hylton for sharing her story. After reading her life between these pages the three takeaways that resonate with me; 1 Several of the men in her life took advantage of her vulnerability. 2 We should listen to young people when they have something to tell us, or at a minimum investigate their claims. 3 I love the part of the book where she says "I truly have transformed - not into a different person, but like my thesis subject James Baldwin, I was just acting as the "real me" whom I know I've been all along." Thank you for sharing.
