Most of the careers presented in this book require a college education. What about students who do not plan to go to college? This book doesn't really speak to that segment. Many young people simply cannot afford to go to college. I think the time is long overdue in the United States to stop pushing college and start providing vocational training and apprenticeship programs instead. We have hundreds of thousands of students spilling out of colleges with useless degrees who can't find work because they do not possess any marketable skills. We need books that provide career ideas and inspirations for those who do not plan to go to college. It cannot be assumed that everyone in the U.S. is going to go to college. This book was not able to give my daughter the assistance she had hoped to find.

I bought this for my grandson who is a junior in high school and struggling with what he wants to do for a career. This book is awesome....so easy to read. My grandson loves it. I highly reccomend it.

According to my highly qualified spy net (my daughter & her husband), my 15-year-old granddaughter is actually reading this book, cover to cover. Shazam! Before giving her this book, I scanned through it & liked what I saw. The book makes excellent use of color, white space, & diagrams, so as to draw a teen's attention to possible career paths based his or her specific interests & aptitudes. Further, it does a very good job of laying out the necessary skills, interests, & potentials of each of the MANY careers that it covers. It does this in such a way that it can get a teen to see school as a path to an exciting future. As a former High School teacher (I'm retired now) I have observed that getting a teen to WANT to study hard in school is much easier if that teen has a specific career goal in mind. This book can help get that to happen.

This books gives a concise easy to understand summary of many occupations. My 13 year old granddaughter is thinking about which careers might be right for her. This book will help her narrow the choices. She can go online and do additional research.

I had to get this for my 14-year-old daughter since she does not know what kind of career she wants to go in. She has been reading this book faithfully which I am very happy about. I am very pleased with this book!

My grandchildren love this book and it is opening up their world of ideas to them. I have grandchildren different ages and the older ones have grown into this book. They love it and I love it because it gives us so many things to read and talk about. I love the fact that it has opened up a whole new world to them and they are thinking about their opportunities in the future. This is a great thing.

I'm glad I bought this book. It would be great for any parent or guidance counselor to keep handy. The kids love looking at it. It gives them ideas on careers they may not have thought of, and if they have an idea of what they want to do, they can read about what kind of skills they'd need, what kind of education and training, what kind of pay range, etc. Format is very usable and quickly grasped.

This book covers nearly every career field, the pay scale, education needed, etc. Great read, especially for a high schooler or one going back to school to complete a degree.

This book is an excellent reference for anyone seeking quick information on the Algerian War. Mr. Windrow does a fine job of synthesizing this long and complicated conflict into its basic elements. The book is a short 48 pages and done in the traditional format of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series. It contains over three dozen black and white photos of the Algerian landscape, French paratroopers, and fighters of the Army of National Liberation (ALN). The ALN was the military wing of the FLN, which was the political organization. The book also contains eight color plates with three figures per plate. Each figure represents a different uniform from either the French or the ALN. Each figure is clearly drawn and the plates provide excellent color companions to the black and white photos found throughout the book. At the end of the book, each illustrated figure is described in detail. In some cases, however, the narrative is too detailed and thus, extremely tedious reading. The second chapter provides a helpful summary of the entire war. This chapter is a quick chronological reference to all significant events in the war, such as the Battle of Algiers, the Battle of the Frontiers, the Challe Plan offensive, and the Barricades Week. Subsequent chapters provide a breakdown of the ALN and how it was deployed over six geographic areas known as Wilayas. The author then does the same for the French forces. He first describes the poorly trained Sector troops. The author then discusses the General Reserve, more commonly knows as "Les Paras." These mobile interventionist forces came from two Parachute Divisions. Mr. Windrow ends the main section of the book with a description of the 1961 mutiny in the French army. This mutiny had a significant affect on the final outcome of the war. This book will not provide the reader with any significant understanding of the conflict. It will, however, serve as an excellent complement to other books on the topic. The author makes reference to Alistair Horne's: A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-62. Mr. Horne's book is often cited as the definitive story of this war. Bottom line: when read in conjunction with a more comprehensive work on the Algerian War, this book provides an excellent reference guide to the significant events and the military forces engaged in the conflict

This is a conflict that France obsesses over like America does Vietnam. It reflects a loss on many levels and will be debated for decades. Currently, the Algerian conflict offers lessons for insurgencies and terrorist actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. I am fan overall of Osprey and their library of titles. For me they act as a great introduction to a piece of history that often prompts me to research and read more deeply on the subject. And that happened in this case as the Algerian conflict is fascinating. I have been trying to get my hands on France and the Algerian War by Alexander to continue my follow-up.

After the Lost of Indochina,Algeria became more interested the need of independence but for some Algeria was the Jewel of the Emperie and specially for the Troops that have been their second nation like the French Foreign Legion who have fight for 134 years, many muslin were pro-french but with the pass of time the pressure for Muslim rights, internal self goverment, independence, or even complete integration with France had long been building up among the small but significant academic and professional class which had benefited from the French education. The post-war French loss of Syria and Lebano, military reverse in Indochina and events in Tunisia and Morocco all prepared the ground for rebellion in Algeria. The ALN try to emulated the VIETMINH, but never enjoyed the VIETMINH'S greatest asset, an area they could control and in which they could hide up and remain secure. After 8 years of war on March 1962 a cease-fire was finally arranged between government and FLN representatives at Evian, France. In the long-awaited referendum, held the following July, Algeria voted overwhelmingly for independence. The colons began a mass evacuation; before the end of the year most of them had left the country.Martin Windrow come again with another title dedicated to another War of French Decolonization(check The French Indochina War 1946-54 MMA322)this time we enter the Algerian War in North Africa, with a quick overview of the war and a summary of main eventes between 1954-1962, I like the comments on The Army of National Liberation(Command Structure)and the French Army in Algeria with all their troops from Zouaves to Natives,a part dedicated to the Mutiny of April and Select Bibliography(Small)The Book is small but help me see the War in a Quick look, with good photos and superb colour artwork by Mike Chappell. we can see the ANL and the French Amry Uniforms in Color(great plates on General Marcel Bigeard famous for the torture of Algerians)For more books on the Wars of Decolonization see Anthony Clayton "The Wars of French Decolonization" and "France, Soldiers, and Africa" thsi two title one dedicated to the French Troops in Africa from 1830 to 1962 and the other to the Wars of Liberation of the Colonial Rule Tunisia, Madagascar, Morocco, Indochina and Algeria. Martin Windrow is the author of 5 books on the French Army, French Foreign Legion 1914-45, The French Indochina War 1946-54, French Foreign Legion-Infantry and Cavalry since 1945 and French Foreign Legion Paratroops all from Osprey military History Books. For books on the Algerian War, The Battle of the Casbah by Paul Aussaressess, The Memory of Resistance by Martin Evans,The French Foreign Legion by Douglas Porch, All the major operations in the Algerian War and The Algerian War and the French Army, 1954-62 by Martin S. Alexander, The Movie of Anthony Quinn The Lost Command(1966) is dedicated to Algeria and the another movie "The Battle of Algiers" is also a great story on the War and the violent counter-terrorist measures use by the French Army. Athony Clayton also have another book dedicated to the Post War Era but explore all the major conflict only in Africa,"Frontiersmen-Warfare in Africa since 1950"

Accurate tales about the Algerian war and pictures

I had heard of this bloody war, but didn't know much about it. In this 48-page softbound book, there are intriguing photos, diagrams and accounts of France's war in one of its colonies in the 1950's and 60's.I had a much better understanding of this war and the outcome of French-Arab relations once it was over. It is a definitive history of the French-Algerian war, and I recommend it. One small criticism, however, is that it is too short. A book that dives deeper into the conflict, with more information on the origins of the War and it's eventual outcome, would have been helpful.

Amazon.com Review

The Art of Deception is about gaining someone's trust by lying to them and then abusing that trust for fun and profit. Hackers use the euphemism "social engineering" and hacker-guru Kevin Mitnick examines many example scenarios. After Mitnick's first dozen examples anyone responsible for organizational security is going to lose the will to live. It's been said before, but people and security are antithetical. Organizations exist to provide a good or service and want helpful, friendly employees to promote the good or service. People are social animals who want to be liked. Controlling the human aspects of security means denying someone something. This circle can't be squared.Considering Mitnick's reputation as a hacker guru, it's ironic that the last point of attack for hackers using social engineering are computers. Most of the scenarios in The Art of Deception work just as well against computer-free organizations and were probably known to the Phoenicians; technology simply makes it all easier. Phones are faster than letters, after all, and having large organizations means dealing with lots of strangers.Much of Mitnick's security advice sounds practical until you think about implementation, when you realize that more effective security means reducing organizational efficiency--an impossible trade in competitive business. And anyway, who wants to work in an organization where the rule is "Trust no one"? Mitnick shows how easily security is breached by trust, but without trust people can't live and work together. In the real world, effective organizations have to acknowledge that total security is a chimera--and carry more insurance. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly

Mitnick is the most famous computer hacker in the world. Since his first arrest in 1981, at age 17, he has spent nearly half his adult life either in prison or as a fugitive. He has been the subject of three books and his alleged 1982 hack into NORAD inspired the movie War Games. Since his plea-bargain release in 2000, he says he has reformed and is devoting his talents to helping computer security. It's not clear whether this book is a means toward that end or a, wink-wink, fictionalized account of his exploits, with his name changed to protect his parole terms. Either way, it's a tour de force, a series of tales of how some old-fashioned blarney and high-tech skills can pry any information from anyone. As entertainment, it's like reading the climaxes of a dozen complex thrillers, one after the other. As a security education, it's a great series of cautionary tales; however, the advice to employees not to give anyone their passwords is bland compared to the depth and energy of Mitnick's descriptions of how he actually hacked into systems. As a manual for a would-be hacker, it's dated and nonspecific better stuff is available on the Internet but it teaches the timeless spirit of the hack. Between the lines, a portrait emerges of the old-fashioned hacker stereotype: a socially challenged, obsessive loser addicted to an intoxicating sense of power that comes only from stalking and spying. #456,096 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

After reading it, the book makes one more aware of what to be careful when giving out information of any kind and how to protect yourself and your company's assets. I've heard alot of "Don't ever give out your id/password", "Always have firewalls on your network." One hardly ever hears about 'make sure you're giving information to someone who's supposed to have it'. There's tons of books on security with respect to technology but this is the first one I've seen that actually focuses on the weakest link when it comes to security - the human element. All the firewalls and software can't prevent a social engineer from getting in if he/she knows justs how to act and/or what to say to get what they want. Reading the scenarios really opened my eyes. Theres a scenario where a social engineer pretended to be a manager of a video store. After enough talking to another employee at another branch, the social engineer was able to get enough information to obtain the credit card # of someone who owed money to the client the social engineer was hired by.In reading the scenarios, I'd seen examples where I'd asked for the type of information described for perfectly legitimate reasons. I'd never imagined how someone could take just 1 or 2 pieces of information and create chaos for a person or a company. If you're in the IT industry, or work in any kind of customer service, you really need to pick up this book. This book doesn't bash people for being as helpful as they can be (team player, etc). He's just saying to be more aware of what's going on and when giving out any kind of information, being a little cautious doesn't hurt. As humans, we're not perfect to begin with, but a little awareness will make it just a little harder for that social engineer to get what they want.

"The Art of Deception" was recommended to me by an instructor teaching a CISSP prep class. It is both an enjoyable and informative read. Mitnik is the "real deal" in exploiting social engineering techniques and his books should be required reading by corporate security policy makers (and I am sure it is for many already). This book illustrates various techniques for bypassing established corporate physical and information security security policies. I have actually inadvertently used some of these techniques when troubleshooting network issues or having forgotten my passcard to gain access to systems and rooms. It is often easier to bypass the rules than to go through the steps needed to obtain proper access and people are surprisingly willing to cooperate "just this one time".This book will help you sensitize your employees to the risks of bypassing security policy and recognize when this might be occurring.Highly recommended!CFH

Kevin Mitnick has been arguably the most famous computer hacker out there. His story has been told by others in several books. But here Mitnick is not trying to really share his experiences - rather he calls upon his collection of acquaintances and others he knows to illustrate how people can be engineered. Most of the book is essentially a series of stories of social engineering (getting someone to do what you want without their realizing it) and then some superficial analysis of why it worked. He then tries to synthesize his earlier chapters into a set of practical security precautions, many of which are common sense, and most of which the reader would have already figured out from reading the book. The stories he chooses to share are fairly interesting, both in their daring and setup and in their simplicity. What this book would be best for would be handing it to a corporate manager and allow him or her a wake up call as to security. As we try to work together, have things automated and available on-line and as our organizations grow the catchword is results, even if you have to bend the rules a bit. This is what the social engineer can exploit. Many of the stories skate along the edge of the law, and Mitnick points out when it would cross into illegal. While interesting, after a while the book becomes more tedious in structure and what is being said. Still it is very accessible and would be a great book for someone not so familiar with computers and hacking to see how some of it is done. It should serve as a wake-up call for management as to some of the dangers we face every day. And while most of the stories presented are more in the spirit of curiosity, or fun, or revenge, it would be easy to take them up a notch into activities with serious corporate impact.

The systematic approach to misleading and deceiving people is startling and eye opening at first, but the book's narrative style is smug and ham-handed. About half-way through you realize every story is the same. Why go on?

This is the first book that I've read from cover to cover in close to 7 years. I could not put it down! Read it in 2 weeks, taking notes, evaluating the way I responded to calls at my companies help desk, reviewing some of the links mentioned in the book, etc., etc.,etc. This is one book that if you read it you will have the ability to better defend and better compromise anything and anyone, but if you don't read it you will eventually regret it because there is a wealth of information that I haven't found anywhere else. There are popular web links mentioned that I was shocked to find were still valid. The detail and instruction are immaculate and if you don't read it....simply put you are a foolish morron. Headlines should read, "Mitnick does it again with a simple Mitnick Message!". Kevin, you inspire me and I wish I had your knowledge and influence.

I was thrilled to find another copy of a book I gave my father years ago. As we have just purchased a summer home in Washington, this will be our guide to explore new places.

This book is good but does not include ALL of the named places in Washington State.

You can't drive through Washington, watch tv news or read a newspaper without this book. Along w/ a map, you can become a true Washingtonian. This book is fascinating.

Exactly what I was expecting. Good stuff

This book is great for those who like travia. I found out some intresting things about what some of our cities are named for. Started out as a gift, but ended up keeping it

Not as good as Oregon Place names by another author. Not bad, but not thorough enough.

Some people can travel through or even live in a place without wondering about its history or the origin of its name. I'm not like that, which is what makes this book such an interesting and useful tool -- whether traveling here in Washington, or just browsing at home.I mean, you gotta wonder: Is Humptulips as vaguely rude as it sounds? Who or what was Sedro Wooley? Who fought whom at Battle Ground? Did Startup get its name because that's where you 'start up' into the mountains (and what if you're coming the other direction)? And what about the whole Snohomish-Skykomish-Swinomish-Suquamish-Skokomish-Sammamish mess? This book is an excellent reference for getting to the bottom of it all. Not only cities and towns, but mountains, counties, rivers -- nearly everything with a name (except roads, bridges, and buildings) is listed here.I do have to note, though, that although this book has been updated at least through the 1990s, it neglects to mention that King County, Washington, was 'renamed' in 1986. It no longer honors former US vice president William Rufus de Vane King, but is in fact now named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (this is true; you can look it up). Apart from that oversight, though, I recommend this title highly for people like me who can't help wondering why where they are, is what it is.

I was hoping for more cities and towns to be included. I am interested in place origins. But it is a great book
