Adorable. This book is like a combination of Grandma wisdom of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without," and Project Runway (which is a combination that works better than it sounds). Who remembers The Elephant Show with Sharon, Lois and Bram? They performed a song this book reminded me of, where a coat became a jacket became a vest became a hat became a tie became a pocket became a button...you get the drift. Anyway, the sweet story and impossibly cute illustrations combine to make this something I hope my granddaughter will love, and a message I hope she'll embrace.

We have been reading this over and over again because the story is just so cute. The illustrations are nice. The tempo is very upbeat and catchy, and sounds very good when read aloud. The story itself is nice because not only does it talk about fashion, it addresses the idea of repurposing things. I also appreciate that although the main character is POC, the story isn’t about her race or racial struggle. The story also has repeated lines that are perfect for kids who like to read along with parents. This book makes for a great gift for children 3-6. If they like Fancy Nancy or anything fahshion or craft related, they will love this.

This is the cutest story. I got this for my 4-year old niece and she can’t get enough. She has read it with her mom several times since receiving it. She’s a little fashionista of color, and she loved seeing a brown girl like her on every page. Her mom told me she excitedly said, “mommy, she looks just like me!” That said, this is a universal story that will appeal to a range of ages.

This book is so sweet for so many reasons - first and foremost, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. My 7 year old traces the whimsical pictures with her fingers as we read. The story is equally sweet, showing a girl can repurpose and reuse one of her favorite things, her pretty pink dress, and her mother teaches her how to get crafty and think creatively. My girls ask for this book every night, definitely one of our absolute favorites.

I loved this book. Sweet story, beautiful illustrations! My little sister (10) couldn't stop looking at it. I really appreciated the opportunity to give my sister a book about a girl who looks like her without the theme of the book having anything to do with race. Really refreshing and cute!

We read this book every night - my daughter loves it! Very cute. It's about a little girl who upcycles a favorite dress of hers. My daughter is 3 and when I say she is obsessed with this book - I mean it!

Got this for our nursery... but my 3 year old daughter loves dresses. This story really spoke to her and she loved all the colorful, fun pictures. It gave us both a lot to think about when it comes to recycling our clothing. Definitely recommend for lots of ages.

This has become my five year old daughter's favorite book. She quotes from it often ("making molehills out of mountains", etc.) and it's honestly become a source of inspiration to her in terms of creativity and problem solving. I really can't recommend it enough. I even find myself tearing up at the end when I read it aloud because the underlying theme is about a child growing up and ever-changing.

Review

""The Most Ominous Book I Read in 2018" (Carlos Lozado, Washington Post)""One of Vox's 9 Thinkers Who Made Sense of 2018's Chaos""There is little if any support in voting data for the notion that 'economic anxiety' drove people to vote for Trump. As documented in Identity Crisis, an important new book analyzing the 2016 election, what distinguished Trump voters wasn't financial hardship but 'attitudes related to race and ethnicity.'"---Paul Krugman, New York Times"I think it is, without doubt, the most important, most illuminating book written on the 2016 election. And in doing that I think it's one of the most important books for understanding American politics today. . . . There are so many findings in the book that if you really absorb them they can rock your understanding of politics."---Ezra Klein, Vox"A vital new work on the political culture of the Trump era."---Carlos Lozada, Washington Post"One of the most influential books on the 2016 election."---Thomas B. Edsall, New York Times"The importance of the backlash around race and immigration inside the GOP is a central theme of a timely, careful and data-rich new book on the 2016 election by political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler and Lynn Vavreck. In Identity Crisis, they argue that Trump understood what was happening inside the party in a way his rivals did not."---E.J. Dionne, Washington Post"Other academics may also be skeptical of Cyberwar. A forthcoming book on the 2016 campaign, Identity Crisis, by the political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler, and Lynn Vavreck, argues that Russian interference was not a major factor in the Presidential election, and that the hacked e-mails 'did not clearly affect' perceptions of Clinton. Instead, they write, Trump's exploitation of divisive race, gender, religious, and ethnicity issues accounted for his win."---Jane Mayer, New Yorker"Under their microscope, the white 'economic anxiety' excuse for voting Trump morphs into something completely different, identified by the authors as 'racialized economics,' which they define as 'the belief that undeserving groups are getting ahead while your group is left behind.'"---Charles Jaco, St. Louis American"With the luxury of hindsight and analytical acumen, political scientists John Sides, Michael Tesler, and Lynn Vavreck have produced an exceptionally well-researched and insightful postmortem that soberly isolates the election's core significance: a polarizing debate over American identity spurred by immigration and demographic change. The result, Identity Crisis, is a definitive, statistically informed account of the 2016 presidential election."---Justin Gest, American Prospect

Excellent book about before, during and after the 2016 election. By presenting an amazing array of facts in words, graphs and tables the authors have done the heavy lifting for us. They show that much of what one has heard or read in the newspapers is not the whole story. I found this read spellbinding.

I’ve read a lot of books about the elections all year. This one is the best thus far. Whatever you have read so far, this book will help dispel any misconceptions. A must read!

Hands down the best recap and analysis of the 2016 election. Cuts through all of the terrible punditry like a knife to explain what actually happened. Also very readable for an academic-level book.

I have read these authors' earlier work on the 2012 election which I thought was very well-done. This book is even better. It sheds important light on why Trump was successful. Unlike other books on the election, this one develops and tests hypotheses with great rigor. Excellent!

If it’s not too soon for you to stand back and examine the 2016 United States Presidential election, consider reading a book titled, Identity Crisis: The 2016 Presidential Campaign and the Battle for the Meaning of America, by John Sides, Michael Tesler and Lynn Vavreck. Using lots of data and charts, the authors describe an electorate ripe with the conditions necessary to elect President Trump. While I think the authors provide a comprehensive view of the conditions at play in that election, it’s still a bit too soon for me to look back at that time, and to think that any valuable perspective can be gained at this time. Political junkies and data nerds are those readers most likely to enjoy this book.Rating: Three-star (It’s ok)

While its a very good and well delivered history lesson of 2016, I also felt that it was very much of the 30,000 foot variety. There's nothing wrong with it, but there wasn't much "insider-level" access, IMHO, so there's not too much "new" here that you haven't read or heard a dozen times elsewhere...

If you are looking for an unbiased, intelligent book on the 2016 election, this is neither. It is very hard to come by any sort of documentation of the 2016 election and this is an example of what you will find in every other sort of documentation on the matter. While reading this I kept thinking that even if the people who wrote this book couldn't keep their personal opinions out of everything, they could at least come up with their OWN opinions. Biased, poorly done, unoriginal. And to think this is an academic book that is being taught in schools....

This is a book for academics, full of the usual charts, graphs, surveys, etc. The authors dislike (to say the least) Trump, they dislike his millions of voters as well. This book will make blue state people feel good about themselves.

From School Library Journal

Gr 6 Up—A typical library's collection of career books can quickly become dated or out of touch. Enter this manual. With simple graphics, bright colors, and a vast compendium of information, this guide will engage teens who are wondering, "What now?" Each page contains a job description, information on related careers and salaries, and a skills guide. The book explains precisely how to go from dipping a toe into the waters of a particular job to the highest positions within the field. The index is well organized, and the entries are nicely cross-referenced. The material can be dry or a bit vague at times, especially for readers who would be interested in discovering real-life applications. However, it should be useful for students, and the wide scope of knowledge will keep it current for longer than many comparable titles. VERDICT This strong addition will be fun for browsers as well as for those selecting college majors and making job decisions.—Erinn Black Salge, Saint Peter's Prep, Jersey City, NJ

Most of the careers presented in this book require a college education. What about students who do not plan to go to college? This book doesn't really speak to that segment. Many young people simply cannot afford to go to college. I think the time is long overdue in the United States to stop pushing college and start providing vocational training and apprenticeship programs instead. We have hundreds of thousands of students spilling out of colleges with useless degrees who can't find work because they do not possess any marketable skills. We need books that provide career ideas and inspirations for those who do not plan to go to college. It cannot be assumed that everyone in the U.S. is going to go to college. This book was not able to give my daughter the assistance she had hoped to find.

I bought this for my grandson who is a junior in high school and struggling with what he wants to do for a career. This book is awesome....so easy to read. My grandson loves it. I highly reccomend it.

According to my highly qualified spy net (my daughter & her husband), my 15-year-old granddaughter is actually reading this book, cover to cover. Shazam! Before giving her this book, I scanned through it & liked what I saw. The book makes excellent use of color, white space, & diagrams, so as to draw a teen's attention to possible career paths based his or her specific interests & aptitudes. Further, it does a very good job of laying out the necessary skills, interests, & potentials of each of the MANY careers that it covers. It does this in such a way that it can get a teen to see school as a path to an exciting future. As a former High School teacher (I'm retired now) I have observed that getting a teen to WANT to study hard in school is much easier if that teen has a specific career goal in mind. This book can help get that to happen.

This books gives a concise easy to understand summary of many occupations. My 13 year old granddaughter is thinking about which careers might be right for her. This book will help her narrow the choices. She can go online and do additional research.

I had to get this for my 14-year-old daughter since she does not know what kind of career she wants to go in. She has been reading this book faithfully which I am very happy about. I am very pleased with this book!

My grandchildren love this book and it is opening up their world of ideas to them. I have grandchildren different ages and the older ones have grown into this book. They love it and I love it because it gives us so many things to read and talk about. I love the fact that it has opened up a whole new world to them and they are thinking about their opportunities in the future. This is a great thing.

I'm glad I bought this book. It would be great for any parent or guidance counselor to keep handy. The kids love looking at it. It gives them ideas on careers they may not have thought of, and if they have an idea of what they want to do, they can read about what kind of skills they'd need, what kind of education and training, what kind of pay range, etc. Format is very usable and quickly grasped.

This book covers nearly every career field, the pay scale, education needed, etc. Great read, especially for a high schooler or one going back to school to complete a degree.

This book is an excellent reference for anyone seeking quick information on the Algerian War. Mr. Windrow does a fine job of synthesizing this long and complicated conflict into its basic elements. The book is a short 48 pages and done in the traditional format of the Osprey Men-at-Arms series. It contains over three dozen black and white photos of the Algerian landscape, French paratroopers, and fighters of the Army of National Liberation (ALN). The ALN was the military wing of the FLN, which was the political organization. The book also contains eight color plates with three figures per plate. Each figure represents a different uniform from either the French or the ALN. Each figure is clearly drawn and the plates provide excellent color companions to the black and white photos found throughout the book. At the end of the book, each illustrated figure is described in detail. In some cases, however, the narrative is too detailed and thus, extremely tedious reading. The second chapter provides a helpful summary of the entire war. This chapter is a quick chronological reference to all significant events in the war, such as the Battle of Algiers, the Battle of the Frontiers, the Challe Plan offensive, and the Barricades Week. Subsequent chapters provide a breakdown of the ALN and how it was deployed over six geographic areas known as Wilayas. The author then does the same for the French forces. He first describes the poorly trained Sector troops. The author then discusses the General Reserve, more commonly knows as "Les Paras." These mobile interventionist forces came from two Parachute Divisions. Mr. Windrow ends the main section of the book with a description of the 1961 mutiny in the French army. This mutiny had a significant affect on the final outcome of the war. This book will not provide the reader with any significant understanding of the conflict. It will, however, serve as an excellent complement to other books on the topic. The author makes reference to Alistair Horne's: A Savage War of Peace: Algeria 1954-62. Mr. Horne's book is often cited as the definitive story of this war. Bottom line: when read in conjunction with a more comprehensive work on the Algerian War, this book provides an excellent reference guide to the significant events and the military forces engaged in the conflict

This is a conflict that France obsesses over like America does Vietnam. It reflects a loss on many levels and will be debated for decades. Currently, the Algerian conflict offers lessons for insurgencies and terrorist actions in Afghanistan and Iraq. I am fan overall of Osprey and their library of titles. For me they act as a great introduction to a piece of history that often prompts me to research and read more deeply on the subject. And that happened in this case as the Algerian conflict is fascinating. I have been trying to get my hands on France and the Algerian War by Alexander to continue my follow-up.

After the Lost of Indochina,Algeria became more interested the need of independence but for some Algeria was the Jewel of the Emperie and specially for the Troops that have been their second nation like the French Foreign Legion who have fight for 134 years, many muslin were pro-french but with the pass of time the pressure for Muslim rights, internal self goverment, independence, or even complete integration with France had long been building up among the small but significant academic and professional class which had benefited from the French education. The post-war French loss of Syria and Lebano, military reverse in Indochina and events in Tunisia and Morocco all prepared the ground for rebellion in Algeria. The ALN try to emulated the VIETMINH, but never enjoyed the VIETMINH'S greatest asset, an area they could control and in which they could hide up and remain secure. After 8 years of war on March 1962 a cease-fire was finally arranged between government and FLN representatives at Evian, France. In the long-awaited referendum, held the following July, Algeria voted overwhelmingly for independence. The colons began a mass evacuation; before the end of the year most of them had left the country.Martin Windrow come again with another title dedicated to another War of French Decolonization(check The French Indochina War 1946-54 MMA322)this time we enter the Algerian War in North Africa, with a quick overview of the war and a summary of main eventes between 1954-1962, I like the comments on The Army of National Liberation(Command Structure)and the French Army in Algeria with all their troops from Zouaves to Natives,a part dedicated to the Mutiny of April and Select Bibliography(Small)The Book is small but help me see the War in a Quick look, with good photos and superb colour artwork by Mike Chappell. we can see the ANL and the French Amry Uniforms in Color(great plates on General Marcel Bigeard famous for the torture of Algerians)For more books on the Wars of Decolonization see Anthony Clayton "The Wars of French Decolonization" and "France, Soldiers, and Africa" thsi two title one dedicated to the French Troops in Africa from 1830 to 1962 and the other to the Wars of Liberation of the Colonial Rule Tunisia, Madagascar, Morocco, Indochina and Algeria. Martin Windrow is the author of 5 books on the French Army, French Foreign Legion 1914-45, The French Indochina War 1946-54, French Foreign Legion-Infantry and Cavalry since 1945 and French Foreign Legion Paratroops all from Osprey military History Books. For books on the Algerian War, The Battle of the Casbah by Paul Aussaressess, The Memory of Resistance by Martin Evans,The French Foreign Legion by Douglas Porch, All the major operations in the Algerian War and The Algerian War and the French Army, 1954-62 by Martin S. Alexander, The Movie of Anthony Quinn The Lost Command(1966) is dedicated to Algeria and the another movie "The Battle of Algiers" is also a great story on the War and the violent counter-terrorist measures use by the French Army. Athony Clayton also have another book dedicated to the Post War Era but explore all the major conflict only in Africa,"Frontiersmen-Warfare in Africa since 1950"

Accurate tales about the Algerian war and pictures

I had heard of this bloody war, but didn't know much about it. In this 48-page softbound book, there are intriguing photos, diagrams and accounts of France's war in one of its colonies in the 1950's and 60's.I had a much better understanding of this war and the outcome of French-Arab relations once it was over. It is a definitive history of the French-Algerian war, and I recommend it. One small criticism, however, is that it is too short. A book that dives deeper into the conflict, with more information on the origins of the War and it's eventual outcome, would have been helpful.

Amazon.com Review

The Art of Deception is about gaining someone's trust by lying to them and then abusing that trust for fun and profit. Hackers use the euphemism "social engineering" and hacker-guru Kevin Mitnick examines many example scenarios. After Mitnick's first dozen examples anyone responsible for organizational security is going to lose the will to live. It's been said before, but people and security are antithetical. Organizations exist to provide a good or service and want helpful, friendly employees to promote the good or service. People are social animals who want to be liked. Controlling the human aspects of security means denying someone something. This circle can't be squared.Considering Mitnick's reputation as a hacker guru, it's ironic that the last point of attack for hackers using social engineering are computers. Most of the scenarios in The Art of Deception work just as well against computer-free organizations and were probably known to the Phoenicians; technology simply makes it all easier. Phones are faster than letters, after all, and having large organizations means dealing with lots of strangers.Much of Mitnick's security advice sounds practical until you think about implementation, when you realize that more effective security means reducing organizational efficiency--an impossible trade in competitive business. And anyway, who wants to work in an organization where the rule is "Trust no one"? Mitnick shows how easily security is breached by trust, but without trust people can't live and work together. In the real world, effective organizations have to acknowledge that total security is a chimera--and carry more insurance. --Steve Patient, amazon.co.uk

From Publishers Weekly

Mitnick is the most famous computer hacker in the world. Since his first arrest in 1981, at age 17, he has spent nearly half his adult life either in prison or as a fugitive. He has been the subject of three books and his alleged 1982 hack into NORAD inspired the movie War Games. Since his plea-bargain release in 2000, he says he has reformed and is devoting his talents to helping computer security. It's not clear whether this book is a means toward that end or a, wink-wink, fictionalized account of his exploits, with his name changed to protect his parole terms. Either way, it's a tour de force, a series of tales of how some old-fashioned blarney and high-tech skills can pry any information from anyone. As entertainment, it's like reading the climaxes of a dozen complex thrillers, one after the other. As a security education, it's a great series of cautionary tales; however, the advice to employees not to give anyone their passwords is bland compared to the depth and energy of Mitnick's descriptions of how he actually hacked into systems. As a manual for a would-be hacker, it's dated and nonspecific better stuff is available on the Internet but it teaches the timeless spirit of the hack. Between the lines, a portrait emerges of the old-fashioned hacker stereotype: a socially challenged, obsessive loser addicted to an intoxicating sense of power that comes only from stalking and spying. After reading it, the book makes one more aware of what to be careful when giving out information of any kind and how to protect yourself and your company's assets. I've heard alot of "Don't ever give out your id/password", "Always have firewalls on your network." One hardly ever hears about 'make sure you're giving information to someone who's supposed to have it'. There's tons of books on security with respect to technology but this is the first one I've seen that actually focuses on the weakest link when it comes to security - the human element. All the firewalls and software can't prevent a social engineer from getting in if he/she knows justs how to act and/or what to say to get what they want. Reading the scenarios really opened my eyes. Theres a scenario where a social engineer pretended to be a manager of a video store. After enough talking to another employee at another branch, the social engineer was able to get enough information to obtain the credit card # of someone who owed money to the client the social engineer was hired by.In reading the scenarios, I'd seen examples where I'd asked for the type of information described for perfectly legitimate reasons. I'd never imagined how someone could take just 1 or 2 pieces of information and create chaos for a person or a company. If you're in the IT industry, or work in any kind of customer service, you really need to pick up this book. This book doesn't bash people for being as helpful as they can be (team player, etc). He's just saying to be more aware of what's going on and when giving out any kind of information, being a little cautious doesn't hurt. As humans, we're not perfect to begin with, but a little awareness will make it just a little harder for that social engineer to get what they want.

"The Art of Deception" was recommended to me by an instructor teaching a CISSP prep class. It is both an enjoyable and informative read. Mitnik is the "real deal" in exploiting social engineering techniques and his books should be required reading by corporate security policy makers (and I am sure it is for many already). This book illustrates various techniques for bypassing established corporate physical and information security security policies. I have actually inadvertently used some of these techniques when troubleshooting network issues or having forgotten my passcard to gain access to systems and rooms. It is often easier to bypass the rules than to go through the steps needed to obtain proper access and people are surprisingly willing to cooperate "just this one time".This book will help you sensitize your employees to the risks of bypassing security policy and recognize when this might be occurring.Highly recommended!CFH

Kevin Mitnick has been arguably the most famous computer hacker out there. His story has been told by others in several books. But here Mitnick is not trying to really share his experiences - rather he calls upon his collection of acquaintances and others he knows to illustrate how people can be engineered. Most of the book is essentially a series of stories of social engineering (getting someone to do what you want without their realizing it) and then some superficial analysis of why it worked. He then tries to synthesize his earlier chapters into a set of practical security precautions, many of which are common sense, and most of which the reader would have already figured out from reading the book. The stories he chooses to share are fairly interesting, both in their daring and setup and in their simplicity. What this book would be best for would be handing it to a corporate manager and allow him or her a wake up call as to security. As we try to work together, have things automated and available on-line and as our organizations grow the catchword is results, even if you have to bend the rules a bit. This is what the social engineer can exploit. Many of the stories skate along the edge of the law, and Mitnick points out when it would cross into illegal. While interesting, after a while the book becomes more tedious in structure and what is being said. Still it is very accessible and would be a great book for someone not so familiar with computers and hacking to see how some of it is done. It should serve as a wake-up call for management as to some of the dangers we face every day. And while most of the stories presented are more in the spirit of curiosity, or fun, or revenge, it would be easy to take them up a notch into activities with serious corporate impact.

The systematic approach to misleading and deceiving people is startling and eye opening at first, but the book's narrative style is smug and ham-handed. About half-way through you realize every story is the same. Why go on?

This is the first book that I've read from cover to cover in close to 7 years. I could not put it down! Read it in 2 weeks, taking notes, evaluating the way I responded to calls at my companies help desk, reviewing some of the links mentioned in the book, etc., etc.,etc. This is one book that if you read it you will have the ability to better defend and better compromise anything and anyone, but if you don't read it you will eventually regret it because there is a wealth of information that I haven't found anywhere else. There are popular web links mentioned that I was shocked to find were still valid. The detail and instruction are immaculate and if you don't read it....simply put you are a foolish morron. Headlines should read, "Mitnick does it again with a simple Mitnick Message!". Kevin, you inspire me and I wish I had your knowledge and influence.

I was thrilled to find another copy of a book I gave my father years ago. As we have just purchased a summer home in Washington, this will be our guide to explore new places.

This book is good but does not include ALL of the named places in Washington State.

You can't drive through Washington, watch tv news or read a newspaper without this book. Along w/ a map, you can become a true Washingtonian. This book is fascinating.

Exactly what I was expecting. Good stuff

This book is great for those who like travia. I found out some intresting things about what some of our cities are named for. Started out as a gift, but ended up keeping it

Not as good as Oregon Place names by another author. Not bad, but not thorough enough.

Some people can travel through or even live in a place without wondering about its history or the origin of its name. I'm not like that, which is what makes this book such an interesting and useful tool -- whether traveling here in Washington, or just browsing at home.I mean, you gotta wonder: Is Humptulips as vaguely rude as it sounds? Who or what was Sedro Wooley? Who fought whom at Battle Ground? Did Startup get its name because that's where you 'start up' into the mountains (and what if you're coming the other direction)? And what about the whole Snohomish-Skykomish-Swinomish-Suquamish-Skokomish-Sammamish mess? This book is an excellent reference for getting to the bottom of it all. Not only cities and towns, but mountains, counties, rivers -- nearly everything with a name (except roads, bridges, and buildings) is listed here.I do have to note, though, that although this book has been updated at least through the 1990s, it neglects to mention that King County, Washington, was 'renamed' in 1986. It no longer honors former US vice president William Rufus de Vane King, but is in fact now named after Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (this is true; you can look it up). Apart from that oversight, though, I recommend this title highly for people like me who can't help wondering why where they are, is what it is.

I was hoping for more cities and towns to be included. I am interested in place origins. But it is a great book

Review

“Kakutani has written the first great book of the Trump administration. The Death of Truth is a fiery polemic against the president and should go down as essential reading. In nine exquisitely crafted broadsides, the Pulitzer winner calls upon her vast knowledge of literature, philosophy and politics to serve up a damning state of the union.” —Rolling Stone“The Death of Truth is destined to become the defining treatise of our age. Not only does it brilliantly and incisively diagnose the roots of our decaying social and political order; it also shows why we must rescue the truth before it is buried under a regime of lies. Everyone should read this book.” —David Grann“This book is essential reading today.” —Walter Isaacson“A rich, erudite book. . . . She brilliantly explains the cultural and political forces that brought us to our current sorry condition—a must read.” —Fareed Zakaria“Dazzling. . . . Kakutani’s slender, fiery new book . . . could have been written only by someone who reads more, and retains more, than most mere mortals.” —TIME“Without the truth we will be neither prosperous nor virtuous nor free. This book begins the self-defense of American culture. May it reach a generation that will make narcissism passé and factuality sexy." —Timothy Snyder"This is the book I would have written—but only if I had had a brilliant grasp of literature, politics, and history, and the ability to weave them together in a uniquely original way. The Death of Truth goes indelibly to the dark, dark heart of what is ailing our democracy as no recent book has done." —Graydon Carter"Kakutani's The Death of Truth is politically urgent and intellectually dazzling. She deftly goes behind the daily headlines to reveal the larger forces threatening democracy at home in America, and elsewhere around the globe. The result is a brilliant and fascinating call-to-arms that anyone who cares about democracy ought to read immediately." —Jane Mayer“A fantastic book of cultural criticism that aims to skewer the falsities in our contemporary world—propagated by social media and political rhetoric—that have turned American culture upside-down.” —Esquire“An elegant polemic against Trump, tyranny and lies.” —The Times“A pointed and penetrating book. . . . The Death of Truth offers a clear-eyed, eloquent assessment of the current predicament. . . . This book is essential for understanding the corrosive effects of an ongoing, relentless assault on truth.” —The San Francisco Chronicle“An intellectually dazzling read.” —Entertainment Weekly“Essential. . . . The Death of Truth is Kakutani’s first book, and to say it’s a doozy would be an understatement.” —Bustle“Anyone wanting a concise summary of the death of truth should turn to Michiko Kakutani’s eponymous book.” —Edward Luce, The Financial Times“Riveting, righteous and relevant.” —The Irish Times“A book to which readers could turn for generations to come as an explainer on how the once-unthinkable came to pass.” —Longreads

Michiko Kakutani, in her book, The Death of Truth, present a realistic view of today's society and its dubious relationship to "true-truth." She shows how we are living in a postmodern era in which there is no such thing as public-objective truth—it is all relative—alternative facts. More specifically, Kakutani shows how relative truth has permeated the culture of our politics as embodied in our 45th President, Donald J. Trump. Why he, and many others, do not anchor reality in the objective truth is clearly brought out in her book. She describes that with alternative facts comes alternative realities. With this, Kakutani give the reader a clear explanation as to why, in particular, Trump and those close to him speak and behave the way they do. Since relative truth is so pervasive, she leave the reader with little hope for a quick change in the public's view of truth.

Excellent short book on our loss of critical thinking skills and how we are being manipulated through social media. Lots of references to other works. Turn off the TV, kill your Facebook and twitter accounts and read objective journalism.

An important book. Right now if you tend to either naively accept or cynically and globally reject information then you can use an understanding of falsehoods, how to negotiate them, and find your own way to the truth. Learn something about how to listen to information and then how to honestly criticize it. Thinking is a tool that you can hone and then use to discriminate the flood of information that pours over us every day. Read this book, it will help.

I agree that the book sometimes seems like a lot of quotes strung together and it is short. But they are brilliant quotes, the organization of the quotes creates a compelling and credible argument, and I love the fact that it is concise and not bloated by an author's ego. And relative affordable. A book for people who like books but don't have time to slog through 500pp. and want a clear take on our times before future historians get to it - should we survive.the moment Kakutani elucidates.

As political discourse in the United States becomes increasingly subsumed by ideology and divorced from both soundness and consensus, Michiko Kakutani provides an analysis of how we got here and provides tentative suggestions on a way out. This is not an optimistic book, but these are not times that give much cause for optimism.

The Death of Truth is a powerful, defiantly written defense of the modern liberal worldview. It is written in opposition to what Kakutani perceives as the malevolent outlook spread by the current administration, particularly its leader. The world Kakutani argues for has deep roots. Going back to the founders, she sees the pillars of democratic society as trust in reason, dialogue with opponents and a sense of national purpose which overrides more parochial considerations. She then sees Trump as promoting a society distrustful of science—the archetype of objective truth—as well as distrustful of the mainstream media and traditional democratic institutions. In its place is a watered-down version of postmodernism: there are only competing narratives and alternative truths. Experts, scientific or not, all have a hidden agenda. There is no way to communicate with opponents—only struggles for power.Kakutani builds this contrast by, ironically enough, constructing her own narrative. Most of the reasons for the debacle she sees in Trump have been expressed by others: news feeds which provide only one perspective, deliberate disinformation campaigns sponsored by Russia and gerrymandering of congressional districts leading to more partisanship. But, I emphasize, while well-sourced, it’s interesting that Kakutani doesn’t support her case with much data. The book is instead a mesh of cultural history, literary theory and philosophy. The narrative will then tend to either resonate or fail to resonate with readers. It cannot be tested like a scientific hypothesis. In addition, Kakutani tends to see all disavowal of truth as stemming from Trump and the Republicans. Didn’t one of Obama’s closest advisors say that Obamacare was sold based on the stupidity of the American people?Even so, to so tersely compose a thesis of such obvious importance is quite an accomplishment. I only wish that Kakutani’s vision of a civilized debate between the right and left within America at large would apply to her own book. It certainly deserves to be read and given thoughtful consideration.

This is a fast read, and a highly engaging and fascinating look at what's happening in our world, with apt historical comparisons. Everything is well researched, and backed up by credible sources. Everyone should read this.

I didn't catch the subtitle on first glance, so as I started reading I was surprised to discover that that the underlying theme read like a screed against Trump's tweets. However, after finishing the book and accounting for that (even putting that aside), the author makes some excellent and relevant points that are able to stand on their own, even without the torrent of alt-facts issuing forth unchecked from the Trump administration.

Hamilton's Paradox: The Promise and Peril of Fiscal Federalism (Cambridge Studies in Comparative Politics)

Review

"This timely book takes on a crucial topic for scholars and practitioners-especially in newly democratizing societies that are walking the potentially dangerous and complex road towards decentralization. It departs from what was becoming conventional wisdom, and develops a more critical and agnostic approach to federalism and decentralization than its predecessors. Roddenas arguments emerge from comparative politics, game theory, and modern macroeconomics, and his empirical approach combines subtlety and breadth by mixing quantitative and qualitative analyses, ranging from cross-country regressions to rich treatments of complex historical cases.(continued underneath)Especially appealing is the fact that his country specialization is thematic and comparative rather than regional. Hamilton's Paradox will become a must-read for economists, political scientists, and other analysis interested in federalism, fiscal policy, and institutional development more generally, and it sets the agenda for future research in the field." Mariano Tommasi, Universidad de San Andrés"This is a landmark book on fiscal federalism and one that will be influential both in policy circles and in the academy for many years to come." Mark Hallerberg, Emory University

Book Description

As new federations take shape and old ones are revived around the world, a difficult challenge is to create incentives for fiscal discipline. By combining theory, quantitative analysis, and historical and contemporary case studies, this book lays out the first systematic explanation of why decentralized countries have had dramatically different fiscal experiences. It provides insights into current policy debates from Latin America to the European Union, and a new perspective on a tension between the promise and peril of federalism that has characterized the literature since The Federalist Papers.

As the book's title suggests, the problem of how to restrain local governments from excessive spending when they are backed up by a federal guarantee has haunted federalism since Hamilton's time. Rodden's book takes a nuanced approach to this question with careful hypotheses that interact federal autonomy with national and local fiscal discipline. He then tests the hypotheses with data from OECD countries. Highly recommended for student of political economy and/or federalism.

I wouldn't have bought Dark Desires, published in 2012 and the book that led me to His Dark Kiss if I'd read HDK first. While I found DD to be a fairly well written gothic romance with a better than average plot and a minimum of cliche, His Dark Kiss is a turgid potboiler. Clearly Ms. Silver's writing improved from 2006 when HDK was published to 2012. Thank goodness. If you want to read all the gothic cliches--a semi-desperate, but beautiful female protagonist who is immediately attracted to the tortured and mysterious male protagonist, a spooky castle with an off-limits tower, whispering voices, deep wells, etc--then pick this one up. Otherwise, read some of Ms. Silver's later works. This one is really so formulaic you'll have figured rather quickly. Once that happens there's no real reason to keep reading.

Completely baffled by how this book got all the high reviews. The heroine spends all her time gasping with maidenly lust, every single time she looks at her employer. He apparently is such a stallion that he cannot remain fully clothed, and his chest, even his abs are on display... sounds highly unlikely for the time period. The other characters are cardboard cut-outs, uttering warnings that so dire they could fit into Young Frankenstein dialogue. When the suspense plot begins to unfold, we are presented with a completely disgusting description of a corpse ridden with anthrax (which the hero's coachman is hiding in the estate's tower, mind you). The hero apparently sees no reason the heroine should be upset by this, or why he should explain why he's into dead bodies ... and that's where I quit.I couldn't hack anymore of this dreadful nonsense.

When I read the first book in the Dark Gothic series, it took me awhile to get into. However, by the end I was thrilled with this author. Then I read His Dark Kiss. To say I was caught up in the story is an understatement. The main character is an illegitimate, naive, lonely girl who finds herself strongly attracted to her employer. She is a little over the top sometimes with her inability to breath when in his presence or when he is near, her heart races. You can feel the longing of this young woman for her dark lord in the author's writing. They do eventually consummate the relationship but the build up was incredible. I was more impressed with this story than the first one and bought the next book along (even though they are stand-alone novels).

She kept repeating over and over how she felt about this guy every two seconds in the same way. It got old quick. Also the part where she thinks he’s going to stab the boy was just so outlandish. It made no sense. I like her work normally but this wasn’t may favorite.

True Gothic novels are very hard to find. For modern authors, they've become a campy medium for sappy romances without any of the dark intrigue of the original genre. With that said, I cannot express how happy I was to find that Silver embraced these original themes of the Gothic genre and pulled off a novel not only elegantly written but so well developed that I could not put it down until I read in one shot. The characters are interesting, their development excellent. The plot is full of twists and, like a true Gothic novel, leaves you guessing after each piece of the mystery is revealed. I cannot go on enough about how much I enjoyed this novel and will definitely be picking up more from the series and from Silver.

I'm giving this book 4 stars. The plot is very interesting, as were the different characters throughout the story. My one , shall I say, irritation, is with the main female. The heroine gave me whiplash with her mental see-sawing. Some confusion and mistrust on her part was completely warranted, but it went on far too long. It is dragged out and inevitably becomes very irritating. As I said, the story itself is compelling and keeps you wanting to continue reading. I did like the personality of the heroine, a lot actually. If she had struggled with her thoughts regarding the male lead a less, or even if her reflections were more brief in description I would have rated this book a solid 5 stars. I enjoyed the twists and turns, and the romance was well done. I like a bit of steam in the bedroom scenes and these were nicely descriptive! The other reason for my 4 star rating is I'm a fan of a nice tidy epilogue, and this book does not include one. Although it does end with a HEA.I will definitely be reading more from this author.

Not as good as the first, but that probably had more to do with the heroine's actions/reactions. Emma jumps to so many conclusions and my frustration is always one where I can never stomach the characters not talking. A perfect example is when she sees Lord Anthony enter his son's room with a knife and she jumps on the child to protect him because, why else would his father have a knife other than to harm the boy? A boy that she has clearly seen loves his father and for whom the father clearly adores him in return. She even questions what she is seeing, but instead of simply asking, assumes the worst. And the fact that he lets the governess get away with dictating his actions toward his son is preposterous. A true villain would have reacted differently.I did begin to guess who was behind the strange happenings at the manor, but the coming together of the mysteries behind Lord Anthony's wife's death was still a good story to read.

Even better than the first in this series of Gothics by Silver: tortured hero, mysterious encounters, lurking danger, and steamy passion. There's a little too much graphic description of the bedroom scenes to suit my taste, but not enough to ruin the story for me. This turned into a real page-turner in the final chapters. Overall, a very satisfying read.Note about "series": This is a series by virtue of genre, not characters. Do not expect the books to be tied together through relationships among the people depicted.

I enjoyed Dark Desire way better. Emma kinda got on my nerves. She came off a little weak to be as curious as she was. Like the ending, I was totally shocked as to who was the culprit.
