I needed a basic book to teach my eleven-year old how to play guitar. I was pretty wary when I saw the cover and thought it might be too easy, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it was written in a clear way that wasn't childish. I don't know why they had to put cartoon characters on the front, maybe that's the look of every book in the series. I thought the authors did a nice job of explaining what you need to know without bogging it down into two many details. For example, there is a page on buying guitars, there is a page on tuning, there is a page on basic music theory, but then you just move on to playing. The authors also did a good job of explaining WHY things are the way they are, and I learned some new facts along the way too, like why the down stroke and up stroke symbols look the way they do. I also appreciate the fact that they don't make you play nursery rhymes, but contain a variety of different music genres. In all, this will be very useful as I teach my son how to play guitar.

This is an informative and educational book, it's filled with lots of lessons to be learnt and it provided an Avenue for me to spend much needed quality time with my daughter.About the book - Guitar For Kids is a fun all-colour guide on the first steps of learning to play Guitar with over 70 photographic examples, purpose-made diagrams and cartoons. Starting with advice on buying your first guitar, how to hold the guitar and how to tune it, the music then begins with easy-to-play melodies using only open strings (open strings means only the plucking hand is used), before moving to simple pieces in which the fretting hand is also used. The book goes into detail for some basic techniques because you're better off getting it right from the start rather than develop bad habits.Tablature Based - Guitar for Kids uses mostly guitar tablature making this popular instrument more easily accessible for beginners (as do most adult guitar method books). The rhythmical aspect of Sight-reading is covered within the Chords section which eases-in the later Sight-reading section because the only new thing to learn will be reading different notes from the musical staff.The author did a fantastic job on this book, the writing was of a high literary quality which is one of the reasons I really enjoyed reading this book, right from the first page the pace of the book was steadily built and the pace and tempo increased as it went on, it got to a point I was so hooked I couldn't stop till I finished reading it. An all round complete and interesting book filled with lots of lessons to be learnt which I strongly recommend and I'll proudly give five out of five stars.

As a teacher I know the importance of a successful introduction to any new subject - it is so very easy to put children off instantly if you don't get this right. This book is highly appealing to children as it has loads of photographic examples, cartoons and diagrams to make the subject visually appealing. It is not easy to learn an instrument and later will come the grind of hours of practice, but at this stage you want to pique the child's interest and make them feel they are mastering something new quite quickly. There are audio tracks of various musical genres with the guitar part removed to enable the pupil to play over the track. It is a small book with loads of content.

From the basics of the guitar itself to properly using and holding it, this book is the perfect beginner's tool for any child that wants to learn how to play guitar. It is written in a way that makes it easy for kids and parents to follow, and it's fun.Once the basics are out of the way, the book teaches children all of the tools needed to play actual music. The book integrates fun photos, and you can digitally listen to the music that is written out (perfect to make sure that you know you're playing it right).I like that even though this is a children's book, it is written in a way that even adults who've never picked up a guitar can get a good lesson without feeling like they're being talked down to.This book is all your child will need to decide if the guitar is the right instrument to them, and it's a much cheaper initial investment than lessons!

Don't let the cover put you off.This book has the lessons I thought were the foundation of playing well. I was having problems finding lessons that were easy, interesting and covered the fundamentals that I was looking for. I am pleased and will be looking for more by this author.This book was very difficult to introduce to my preteen. He wanted nothing to do with the baby book I kept downloading for him. I kinda had to trick him into reading Guitar lessons for kids. I was able to leave the book open, so he had no clue what he was reading at first.I would give this 5 stars, except the cartoon characters are so preschool age and do not fit with the books diverse age group. He is embarrassed to keep this childish book in his download library.

My nine year old son just started taking guitar lessons weeks ago and I have a very basic knowledge and skill level (I can play a few songs badly). This book really helped clear up some things that were confusing to him. We spent a couple hours going through it and he kept saying "Ohhhhh, now I get it!" The comparison of holding the pick like a pencil and resting your hand on the guitar like you would on the table when you're drawing was especially helpful for him. We will keep this book next to his new guitar and refer to when he's practicing. Great guide for new players, young and old!

My five year old and I had such a great time going through this book together. It made her first encounter with the guitar positive and enjoyable for both of us. I think her favorite section was tuning the instrument. We broke a string, but that was a lesson for her, too. The book is easy to follow and I would recommend it to anyone who has a young child who has expressed interest in learning this instrument.

I almost NEVER write a review. But because I’ve read other works by this thoughtful author, I waited patiently for this one to be released, and read it with enthusiasm. It might be his best yet. Let me begin by saying I’m a “softy,” and often don’t like when books or movies get too gritty. Yet, I found that he painted pictures that I thought were necessary for us to see how deeply ugly and evil we can be to each out as “human beings.” I would chase my family members, telling them about this book, the characters, reading scenes from the book. I loved the “thickness” of the characters, none of whom were paper-thin. There was one point in the book where I thought I might need to abandon it; I was so fearful that Thelma would make a decision against hope. Yet the author BRILLIANTLY kept me reading, and I was not disappointed. The book was realistic, yet hopeful, and I loved the modern-day message about race that was woven throughout the text. I could go on and on.....my only challenge was the use of the word “n——“ was used so pervasively that I couldn’t listen to the book anymore. I just committed to reading it to completion. My only request is that whoever directed/produced the movie “Mudbound” needs to make this book their next project. This would make an AMAZING MOVIE!” Just prepare yourself...it would be Rated R. This is not one for the kiddies, but it’s definitely a book worth reading. You will fall in love with some of these characters, as imperfect as they might be. I could go on....Well done, Leonard Pitts, Jr.!

Since first reading Leonard Pitts, Jr.’s columns in the Miami Herald almost 18 years ago, I have found that if Pitts has something to say, I want to read it. . . in fact, I need to read it. He can put complex, often difficult, ideas into beautiful words that show the reader his point of view, educating and helping the reader gain empathy and understanding.I ordered Pitt’s latest book, #TheLastThingYouSurrender, as soon as it was released – and it was everything I expected and more. It is a deeply researched work of historical fiction, with a compelling story that is hard to put down. I tried to keep from racing through the book, as I didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters who became friends, and who showed me the world through their eyes – which is why we read!Yes, there are parts that are very difficult to read, but part of power of this book is to show us, to remind us of the brutality of parts of our history that get glossed over as some of us extol the “good old days.”I highly recommend this book, and hope Mr. Pitts will write a sequel to show us how they carry their inspiration and motivation into battles to come.

Loved the story and characters. I've read several works of historical fiction, for WWII and the Revolutionary War, and this was every bit as compelling a read. But so much more due to the racial backdrop for most of the characters and story. I'm old enough to have witnessed some of this atrocious behavior as a child in early 70s Dallas. But seeing the depth of and viciousness of it on display here is simply overwhelming. And to see some now think it's still okay to treat others so poorly, I just don't have the words or understand it at all. I'll never see things as you do, but reading & thinking through your words certainly helps my perspective. Thank you! Keep on writing.

A story that needed to be told for far too long. Mr. Pitts has told it exceedingly well. He vividly paints a world to which we can not - must not - return, a world of fear and hatred. We must be better.

Well written and insightful. Mr. Pitts is one of the best current commentators on America, past, present, and future. This branch into a novel on WWII carries his abilities into this format.

Karoline Kan had a great idea when she decided to write a book about her family and their life under Communist rule in China. Family members were reluctant to talk about the lives they thought were too ordinary for words, so Ms. Kan had to patiently listen and let the stories come out naturally in conversation.Ordinary life in China is definitely not ordinary or boring for anyone born and raised in the United States! In even tones and often without emotion, Ms. Kan writes about her childhood in an atmosphere of tension and fear, among people whose lives were constricted by blighted hopes and dreams. Given that she was an illegal second child in the one-child policy era and that she was born in a rural village, she shouldn't have had any opportunity to escape the poverty and deprivation of her family's life. But her mother was determined that her son and daughter should have every opportunity to achieve as much as they could.In the United States, going to college and getting a job that satisfies the soul as well as brings in a good salary can be challenging, but not to the extent that the author demonstrates that it is in China. While reading this book, I had to keep reminding myself that the author is writing about current times. The backwardness, censorship and shocking intrusions into people's lives (particularly women) are hard to imagine for those of us fortunate enough to have been born into a democracy. I can't see for one second how China could be a superpower in the midst of an economic boom when the government seemingly wants its citizens to be ill equipped and undereducated.A running theme in Ms. Kan's book is her curiosity about the Tiananmen Square massacre of June 4, 1989 and her determination to learn about it despite its having been erased from history by the Chinese government. By the end of the book, Ms. Kan is forced to struggle with her national pride in being Chinese after absorbing the knowledge of the deception and violence of her repressive government. The book wraps up someone abruptly, with Ms. Kan writing nostalgically about her childhood and place of birth. I would have liked to read more about her struggle with the truth and how she emerged on the other side with any sense of peace.

I have read many, many memoirs about life in China. Most of these involve the years of the Cultural Revolution. "Under Red Skies" is different---the author, Karoline Kan, was born in 1989, and grew up during the vast changes of recent Chinese history. I loved reading about this. Her life mirrored the changes in the country. She started life in a small village, and then her parents sacrificed to move her brother and her to a larger town, so they could get a better education. Eventually, she moves to Beijing to go to college, and so we see what life is like in starkly different environments.By telling of her life and that of her relatives and friends, we see from a personal perspective so much of recent Chinese history, and what events were most noted there, although they might be all but forgotten here in the US. For example, the bombing of the Chinese embassy in Belgrade or the SARS outbreak both had major effects on Kan's life, in terms of creating fear and influencing education and policy.The Tiananmen Massacre is something Kan grows up aware happened, but it's almost impossible for her to get any specifics on exactly what happened. Her quest for this knowledge provides a lot of insight into how the media works in China.Kan herself was an illegal second child, and I loved how her book told much about changing Chinese attitudes toward dating, marriage and decisions about children. She comes from a line of strong women, and women's issues are illustrated very strongly in this book.I enjoyed every minute of reading this fine memoir, and learned a great deal also. This book deserves wide readership.

The rise of China has been nothing short of remarkable so it was with great anticipation that I sat down to read this book. Quickly two things became apparent - first, the author and her family are at the cross roads of history...reading the story felt like it should cover a hundred years not just the past few decades. Equally obvious is that despite the amazing time in history, the author lacks any type of emotional appeal...the situations are related in what can only be described as "flat". Having said that, this is still a fascinating glimpse into the ordinary lives of people during an extraordinary time in history...well worth the read!

The author, though young (she was born in 1989, which makes her 20 years younger than my youngest child) none-the-less writes with maturity and depth of vision. She shares not only her own reflections, but vignettes from the lives of her parents and grandparents. At the beginning of the book, she presents a very useful abbreviated historical timeline of the major events from 1945 to 2013. In her narrative, she deals explicitly with how these events impacted her family and herself. Although this is a personal story, not a political polemic, Kan manages to insert valuable sociological and psychological insights as viewed through her own evolving awareness. This book was very helpful in connecting my drive for being self employed and spirituality. The tools in this book have helped me greatly to organize my ideas and create a plan of action to achieve my goals. Revealed in her story we find through dedications discipline and sacrifice she is able to achieve her goals. In "Let GoD Out" he gives good direction to get you started on your path. With what I've learned from this have begun utilizing my short term goal list, waking up at 6am and putting more energy into making my passion my reality. This is what I needed to get me on the right track and with my new focus great opportunities have already opened up for me. Excellent read, very simple and straight forward.

This is a complete reference book on Unix Internals - The system V release.The book is in great condition as well. Thanks.

This seems to be the worst book about the Unix internals I ever read. The signal/noise ratio of this book is quite low. Most of its contents are just slightly commented sVr4 header files (which files by the way you can get for free with a free UnixWare system and not bother about a book). The descriptions of algorighms are short, difficult to follow and sometimes self-contradicting. And between the high-level descriptions of algorithms and low-level header files there is a great gap that makes both these descriptions rather useless. If you look for the description of what's going on inside svr4 then compared to this book the Vahalia's book covers much wider range of systems (including sVr4 and its derivative Solaris), each of them in more detail, has much clearer descriptions, and all that in less volume. But if all you want are slightly commented header files then this book is exactly what you are looking for.

The Magic Garden is so far the most comprehensive and in-depth discussion on the Unix Sys-V kernel. It discusses in-depth on how the new design of virtual memory works, in conjunction with the file system module. The authors include a lot of short source code pieces to illustrate the concept and present explanation in clear and concise language.

I purchased this book recently. Though a little outdated, the concepts covered in this book are invaluable for anyone who wants to understand UNIX internals. I would also recommend Maurice Bach Design of the UNIX Operating System (Prentice Hall Software Series)

Excellent book on UNIX internals. Somewhat confusing at places. But still a good read for any CS student or programmer.
