I’m still as obsessed with this series, as I was when reading book one – Foxhole Court.4.5 starsThe plot’s complexity has quadrupled. Every character has an agenda, and many characters have pasts that are buried so deeply under lies that each discovery only cements my belief that this series is phenomenally awesome.The author is a master storyteller, her way of spinning a fascinating as well as emotional tale is outstanding. Nothing in these books is predictable. Each new discovery is more outrages and in your face than the other. Throughout the first two books my jaw hit the floor countless times. The intricacies between the different plots are mind boggling. There are just some authors that are leap years ahead of others. And Nora Sakavic is one of them. This author and series deserves way more recognition than other hyped authors and series.When you get down to it, the entire series is one long book. Raven King started exactly where Foxhole Court ended. The team finally understands that only united they have a chance to win the final match. And seeing them growing closer, socializing and spending their free time together outside of the court is heart-warming. Because I love them all, I want them to get along.Neil, my favorite character’s journey has been heart wrenching, but I’m also so proud of him. He’s come such a long way, and his progress makes me cheer for him even more. His relationship with Andrew is as fascinating as it is mysterious. He has this unbelievable way with him, that none of the team can get even close to. Even though they constantly battle over truths, lies, and secrets, at the end they are just trying to understand the other person. It’s quite fascinating for me as well as for them, because they each are fascinated by one another.Raven King ended with two major arcs, and I can’t wait to read how these two arcs play into Neil and Andrew’s relationship.I’m not going to write much more, I just want to get back to reading The King’s Men. So all I can say is read this series, actually buy it. The first book is free on Amazon, the second and third only cost 99 cents each. That’s an incredible deal. Honestly it’s ridiculous. So one-click NOW!!!

** spoiler alert ** [Marked for spoilers, but nothing in huge detail]I honestly thought book two would be an improvement. Or maybe, I really hoped it would be. Regardless, I'm just too invested in this series to just not finish it now.There's a lot to get out of my system and I'll try my best to keep this review in order.To start, the biggest eyesore is that the writing itself almost seemed to have gotten...worse? I came across a few mistakes that honestly could have been fixed if someone reread it through clearly. For instance, someone mentions to check if someone was still breathing, in a few paragraphs down the task of "breathing" changed to "bleeding". Another example would be in a spot where "both" should have been used, but instead "bother" was used. Normally, I don't harp on such things. However, it just becomes increasingly annoying as they were so simple and obvious. That and I spent time rereading the lines thinking maybe I just reading it wrong.As for characters, I still want to say that there is still some goodness here. I actually love Nicky. He seems to be one of the few that gets to talk a lot with the least awkward moments. To rephrase, most of his parts seemed the least forced. (Ignoring that horrible stereotyped cookie cutter homophobia talk at the family dinner. Like I haven't heard these lines 1000 times already. Impersonal, lacked conviction, and just put in for the sake of having it). Where as anything dealing with Matt, Dan, Renee, or the coach just makes me want to skim and page flip. Their dialogue feels so forced out and I honestly just do not care. It's even worse when they're used to just pass information along or reveal details. Plus, a few just seem unneeded to have separate parts made for. Example being Dan helping Neil remove classes from his schedule. It had a page or so of Dan and Matt explaining the workings of university classes and scheduling. Probably 500 not needed words spent just to show that they are there to help Neil.The only interactions I semi enjoy is Neil and the "monsters". Kevin is probably the most decent character here along side Nicky. Aaron doesn't talk much, or do much for that matter other than the rushed plot twist in the bedroom. Anything Andrew is a mess. One minute they're scared to deal with him off the pills so they always carry his meds around and try to get him to take them, yet they're also scared of him on the pills, and bonus, they all can't wait for him to be off the pills. So which is it? I'm getting so confused as to which Andrew they think is the worse or which one is better. It keeps changing and honestly I stopped keeping track.Meanwhile, the only character growth I'm seeing here has been Neil becoming less concerned about protecting his life and deciding he really wants a death wish. Like full out just throw yourself on a sword death wish. Which, I'm not so sure becoming stupider is nice trait to develop. Although, I suppose it's supposed to speak to him becoming more comfortable and protective of the Foxes. But really? Tell me one more time how the mother is rolling in her grave and I'll personally slap him for her. He also seemed to have developed a sense of knowing details before meeting people or seeing things. For instance he confronts Andrew and suddenly knows the names of Nicky's parents in addition to Andrew's foster family names. Hello?! Who are these people? Yes, I guessed by context clues at that moment, but the reveal isn't until way later when those characters are actually introduced. That's not even the only thing, it just seems like the author thought of something and instead of actually making room for it in a sensible spot, in say book one or in a related area earlier, she just drops it where ever she thinks of it. Then, line by line repeats some of the details we already gained from previous chapters or book one.As for the Ravens, everything with them is super anti climatic. Book one geared up for this big match that just felt so flat when it actually happened. The interactions between them and the Foxes are so posed for effect to distract from that fact that it's really just two boys bickering over their egos. Then I'm honestly supposed to believe that Riko went from casting Neil as useless and a waste of time to suddenly demanding that Neil play for them? So that means Neil isn't useless, right? Riko is an ass because of his father. However, I don't find the rest of the Ravens to be actually that bad. Kevin was once a Raven and he has issues from it but he isn't bad. I truly believe Jean isn't either. Jean is on the wrong side and has to follow what Riko demands to keep his own life. Despite that though he still almost, in some weird ways, wants the best for Neil? He mentions a few times that Neil shouldn't have came. Warns when Neil shouldn't make a fool of himself and because of their joint 'if you get in trouble I do too' pairing Jean pushes Neil to do good to save his own ass. Sadly some of this is based on assumption because this Raven chapter is just that, a chapter. I know why it happened, but honestly it just came and went. I had to stop and make sure a chapter wasn't missing. That's it? Really? Big fat nothing. Maybe more of it comes to light in the third book. I won't hold my breath though.I really would like to be in on what all these five star ratings see. I feel like I'm reading the plot of a sports anime that gets so crazy out of control and distracts from the actual plot it started with. Welcome to soap opera sports. Which I don't actually mind! I can handle the drama and whatever, it's just so frustrating to weed through what is and isn't needed.As I said before, I'm gonna ride this burning train all the way down to it's last stop. It's not a one star because I still enjoy bits of it. It refrains from a three star because there's just too much of 'what?', 'no??', 'wtf' going on here.

As I write this review, I've just finished the first two books of the ALL FOR THE GAME trilogy - and they're both excellent. Main and sub-characters are extremely well developed, and continue to grow through the series.This is a story about a varied group of young adults (college age) who had somewhat (to horrifically) broken childhoods. They're misfits who are brought together through a sport, while continuing to encounter setbacks. As the relationships between the characters evolve, we slowly learn more about their past and how it has brought them to where they are.The first two books contain several gay characters, but no M/M romance and no erotica of any type. Book two contains some violence, but we see more of the aftermath than get dragged through the details. It's necessary to advance the story, not gratuitous.The two initial books are full-sized novels; presumably the third will be as well:The Foxhole Court - 4058 locationsThe Raven King - 5035 locationsThe final book in the trilogy, The King's Men, is expected to be released in January, 2014 (according to a blog post by the author on Nov 15, 2013). These are not standalone books - readers will want to read them all, in order.I complain a lot about eBook prices; this may be the first time I've ever suggested a price.increase. I purchased book one for free, and book two for $0.99. This seems too low given the high quality of the writing and story. Perhaps maintain the free price for book one, but sell books 2 and 3 for $3.99 or $4.99. I would happily pay that amount in return for this author's fine work.

I cannot say enough about this 4 book mini series. From the first installment to the finale, it has left me stunned and in some cases speechless. As his fans have come to understand and know, Mr. O'Brien does extensive research when writes a book or series. This is no different and for this series, literally, The Devil is in the details.John O'Brien's discription of the scenarios are at once beautiful, serene and peaceful. At the same time as terrifying and horrific as they are intense, sad, and above all else, hopeful.But I urge the reader(s) to please don't look at this series as about religion or prophecy although many will take it as such. While he has separated both worlds/realities in their struggle for survival, he has also integrated them so that the eternal struggle of good verses evil is in full display although not as vulgar as it could be. He will leave much of that to your imagination.This is about man/mankind and what they will do (and have done) to their fellow man. It is about power and control, about who is the best suited for leading or destroying. It is about who can best judge man and decide the fate of mankind whom can be and are at times so apathetic they just 'follow the leader' without much question no matter what their senses or eyes tell them just so they don't have to make the hard choices or decisions.But it is also about hope, kindness and sacrifice. It is about realizing your past mistakes whether intentional or not. It is about mistakes made and forgiveness and hope where there might be none and standing for what you believe in and hoping that you yourself don't fall in the trap that is dispair and apathy.The fact that we have angels and demons, the greatest among each group, makes this much more compelling because the struggle on both sides are as separate as they are much the same.(if that makes sense).John O'Brien has taken us from one roller coster emotion to the next and given us a stark reality of what might be coming our way even though this is strictly a book of fiction. But is it really?We have seen this type of apocalypse happen in other countries, but are too caught up in our own world that it does not penetrate that wall we have built around our senses.This mini series will open your eyes if you read between the lines, or you will merely say it was a great book/series. Look past the religious connotations and see the hidden story; mankind will destroy everything around him just to make a point or as a means to an end.But Mankind can also rise above it all and create life and beauty. It is the connundrum of humanity and so very well written in this series. John O'Brien has a gift to see in his mind what he envisions then places it all down for us to see as well and it is to our benefit because we are the recipiants of such a wonderful imagination.Like I said, look past the Angels and demons although admittedly it will be hard to do but here you can make up our own mind. Allan D. Kirk is a Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics and a practicing transplant surgeon and physician at Emory University Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta. Dr. Kirk was the inaugural Chief of the NIH intramural Transplantation Branch and he has been Principal Investigator (PI) for multiple past and ongoing clinical trials. Dr. Kirk's bibliography contains over 200 peer-reviewed manuscripts and he is Editor-in-Chief of the American Journal of Transplantation. Joren C. Madsen is the founding Director of the MGH Transplant Center, which encompasses kidney, liver, lung, heart, pancreas and small bowel transplantation and is Co-Director of the Transplantation Biology Research Center, a multi-disciplinary group of scientists translating discoveries in basic immunology into clinical protocols. Dr. Madsen has authored more than 150 publications and served on the editorial boards of Transplantation, the American Journal of Transplantation, and the Annals of Thoracic Surgery. In 2009, Dr. Madsen became the first surgeon to be elected president of the American Society of Transplantation. Chris Larsen, MD, DPhil, became Dean of Emory University School of Medicine, Vice President for Health Center Integration for the Woodruff Health Sciences Center, and Chairman of the Board of The Emory Clinic in January 2013. As a Vietnam veteran and 30-year Army officer, I was slightly conflicted while reading “A Rumor of War.” Caputo gives a detailed, grippingly realistic, and honest account of what combat was like at the small platoon level during the Vietnam War in 1965 - 1966. He does not pull any punches in leveling criticism for mistakes in the war. He also does not cover-up his shortcomings as a marine platoon leader as noted when he lost control of his men in a rampage and when he lost control of himself and sent out a patrol with implicit orders to “assassinate” two suspected Viet Cong. He and five of his marines were court-martialed for the second incident but were found not guilty. I was troubled by his conduct in this “murder” and the subsequent investigation.While I am proud of my Vietnam service, I am not proud of the pressure that senior leaders put on their subordinates to achieve high body counts. Such pressure led to incidents like those depicted by Caputo.I wish that Caputo had spent just a bit more time on the last month of the Saigon regime while he was a correspondent for the Chicago Tribune.My only regret in reading this frank account is that I had not read it earlier.

A RUMOR OF WAR, by Philip Caputo.This is a RE-read for me. I first read Caputo's Vietnam war memoir more than 35 years ago, in a mass market paperback edition, when it was still a pretty new book. Then it was just a very popular and bestselling book. This time I read it in a 1996 Holt Paperback edition, with a front cover caption calling it "The Classic Vietnam Memoir." And it has certainly earned this title, still in print, still much-read. One of the lines I remembered was a comment from a seasoned Korean War veteran, who told the young Lieutenant Caputo - "Before you leave here, sir, you're going to learn that one of the most brutal things in the world is your average nineteen-year-old American boy." And in the madness and heat of combat, young Caputo learned this to be too true. Indeed, he even discovered some of that brutality in himself.One especially affecting section of the narrative depicts the time that Caputo spent as "Officer in Charge of the Dead," and the fevered, too-real nightmares that went with that job. Another is the unsettling, inebriated feeling he experiences during R&R in Saigon, a feeling that he suddenly realizes is no more than freedom from fear. Similarly, near the end of his tour, he feels it again when he becomes, at least temporarily, indifferent to death."It was not a feeling of invincibility; indifference, rather. I had ceased to fear death because I had ceased to care about it. Certainly I had no illusions that my death, if it came, would be a sacrifice. It would merely be a death, and not a good one either ... There were no good deaths in the war."The real insanity of the war is perhaps best illustrated in Caputo's being brought up on murder charges for a patrol and 'snatch' of suspected VC's he helped to plan. By that time he was not simply indifferent, he was angry, and he could no longer stomach the war.The flat numbness that was felt by so many veterans of the Vietnam war is well summed up with the final lines of Caputo's story as he takes off on a flight out of Vietnam, bound for home -"None of us was a hero. We would not return to cheering crowds, parades, and the pealing of great cathedral bells. We had done nothing more than endure. We had survived, and that was our only victory."Philip Caputo is a fine writer, and yes, this is "The classic Vietnam memoir." I've read quite a bit about Vietnam now, and while this is not my favorite book on the subject (Joe Haldeman's "1968", an early entry in the sub-genre is still my favorite) Caputo is a hell of a writer who is honest about the good and evil he did while serving his tour as a second lieutenant in "The Crotch."This memoir is a novel read for me, in that it is the account of an officer's service (most of the books about Vietnam I've read prior to this are the stories of enlisted grunts who have nothing but contempt ((and the occasional fragmentary grenade)) at the ready for their hapless leaders.In darkly poetic prose, reminiscent of Joseph Conrad and the old Bard Bill Shakespeare himself (yes, Caputo has some glorious moments), the reader finds out what it's like to go to officer candidate school, how it feels to lie helpless as death rains down from the sky above, and how the fear can build up inside a man until he finds himself committing atrocities.Indeed, not to give too much of the story away, but Caputo was tried for murder at one point in a court martial. For me, the most fascinating (and most painful) part of the man's story involved his rotation out of a field unit, into the rear. Caputo makes us understand his shame, as he sits around watching fat cat officers play horseshoes while he has no choice but to sit and wait for the bodies of men from his old platoon stream into the base, minus limbs and faces.There is a deeply fatalist, and religious quality to the work, and Caputo's philosophical digressions are never pretentious, always profound, but more important, honest.

The insights unfold leisurely, but patient readers will find themselves deeply invested. The drawing is so expressive...I think that's one of the aspects I liked most about this novel. Larson's expert illustrations really allowed me to connect with the characters and I happily rooted for Josey and Tara. I became so attached to the characters that I was quite sad when the book ended...I wanted to know more about what happened to these two young girls.There's an element of ghosts or spirits in the book and mystical occurrences which I always find to be lots of fun. I also loved the interplay between the past and the present. The author flipped back and forth between the two stories very frequently, which normally annoys me, but worked perfectly for this book. Overall, I'd recommend this to those who like graphic novels, elements of the supernatural, and historical fiction - a quick fun read!

I had high hopes for Hope Larson as I looked for graphic novels for my grand nieces and nephews this past Christmas. To me, this was probably the best of the Larson novels I found, but I just couldn't follow the story. I'll keep it at home and see if any of the young relatives who visit like it better than I did.

About a year ago, I had the pleasure of purchasing and reading another one of Larson's graphic novels, "Gray Horses." I fell madly in love it, and this second work of art was not a disappointment. This book is intriguing, engaging, and exceptionally beautiful. I plan on re-reading it over and over again.

Nice to see that comics aimed at younger readers can be this good. Top notch art, compelling story and plenty of stuff for both teens and adults to like. The characters are charming, and really look forward to checking out more Hope Larsen books

Mercury is one of those stories I picked up and didn't struggle to read, but found myself constantly wishing for more. The story is OK, the characters quite sweet, and I felt satisfied with the tale, but still many nagging negatives stick in my mind.First of all the artwork, the style is fine but I felt like there were only 1-2 templates the people were drawn from, and without powerful characterization I often found myself double checking who everyone was. Given that the story seemed to rely heavily on meaningful looks and emotional expressions this didn't gel well.Second the story was worthy, but I felt lacked real tension. The basic premise centers around an old-timey gold-rush era family and a modern family and their various trials. On an intellectual level the tales were linked well and should have made sense, but between the complaint above and little to alert the reader which time-span you were in I often found myself having to check the characters clothing to remind myself which story I was in. The old-time family probably held more drama as we see a family react to the appearance of a charming but suspicious stranger, and I could see what the story of the modern family was portraying but I felt it was a little flat. I'll probably have to use some SPOILERS to explain so...SPOILERS AHEAD sorryThe story is basically about a young teenage heroine, who has to live with friends(relatives) due to tough circumstances, the tension is meant to sit with her families lack of income and the likelihood of having to move to another town so her mother can work, but she is settling in 'French Hill' and even has a boyfriend (ooooo). The story is wound up when our MC magically discovered a sack of gold (which was lost/hidden in the old-timey story). Anyway my problem with all this is not so much the details (as I mentioned intellectually its a good story) its more that the narrative didn't make me feel it, most of her story-line seemed just seemed to follow a hard done by teenager, sure moving away from your boyfriend sucks but it never really felt that bad (especially compared to the historic tale)There was an awesome blurt of supernatural towards the end, which was really cool but probably underused and not really explained (it was probably deep cultural metaphoric stuff lost on an idiot like me but whatever) but I think ultimately Mercury could have thrived better as a fleshed out novel or with more story arc.

Set in Nova Scotia, this graphic novel offers a compelling split narrative united by setting and family. In 1859, Josey's family welcomes a stranger into their home who shows them that their homestead contains gold and promises them riches. In present day, Tara's old house has burned down and her family has split up. Rumors of gold will spell out tragedy for one girl, and perhaps offer salvation for another.The contrasts between the stories, and the question of gold, gives Mercury a good amount of tension. The historical story is taut with hints of supernatural and tinged with superstition--ghosts, visions, curses. Josey is hopeful and willfully ignores the subtle warnings. Meanwhile, Tara's story plays out against a very normal, almost banal modern backdrop. She's already lost a lot of hope for the future, but she is continually drawn to the rumors of her family's past and what happened in 1859, and the necklace that unites the two stories. Larson doesn't answer all of the readers' questions about the story, but the climax certainly delivers on all that it promises. Mercury is subtly creepy and memorable.

The book was all worn out. Almost every chapters we had to read were already completely highlighted. The front cover seems like it was ripped or something and taped from the inside and outside, the edges are all ripped and worn off. I'm surprised the pages are still holding onto the book

The premise is outstanding. The writing style is beautiful and reflective, which makes writing this review painful to me. I enjoyed the book overall. Yes, it's very romance driven, which can only make me assume that the moral of the series is finding meaning in loving others. But then we get to the chapter on Finn, a 300-pound kid.Throughout the book Levithan does an outstanding job at describing each person A (the main character) inhabits, giving each character a story, a humane level of respect, the benefit of the doubt even.Everyone, except Finn.With Finn, the author immediately tosses us into a world of self-loathing based entirely on A's assumption that being obese is the reason for self-loathing. Instead of looking at obesity as a symptom of deeper issues both mental and physical, A, cannot see beyond Finn's body to assess how it all happened - leaving us to once again, assume that all fat people got there through their own choices and nothing else. At one point A even equates Finn's emotions to a burp and describes that he/she COULD look deeper into Finn and find there some level of humanity. But he/she never tried. Instead, A couldn't get out of Finn's body soon enough - leaving Finn with no vote of confidence, and not even the decency of telling us his story.If Levithan had done the same for the gay, trans, black, Asian etc. stories in his book, there would have been an uproar of condemnation. But it's still okay to pick on the fat kid - and I am disappointed that a character who has no body of his/her own, is still passing judgment on the body of another who did not ask to be inhabited, and certainly did not ask to be inhabited and judged.It appears that to A (and Levithan) being fat is so far worse than being a creeper who jumps from body to body with no physical body of his/her own. It's amusing to me that A can argue his/her own value to Rhiannon, but not see Finn's value as a human being.Considering that so many kids and adults have eating disorders and body-shame issues that lead to all sorts of destructive patterns - this chapter should have been carefully examined. I am surprised that editors and family let him get away with this.The best I can hope for is that A ends up in the body of Finn again, where he/she has to finally learn to love himself. Then, and only then, will Finn have a chance to be truly seen and understood.

I was really intrigued by the unique concept of this book and after reading other good reviews I decided to get it. It started out very interesting, but as I kept reading I realized the plot wasn't going anywhere. A's experience as each person was cool from their perspective, especially because A was able to accept and appreciate such a diverse group of individuals (except for one guy who A fat shamed when in his body- not cool). Unfortunately I kept hoping there would be answers to A's situation or least some closure/acceptance with who they were. In the end, A ended up running away from their problems and not really in a self discovery kind of way. I don't regret reading it, but it left an unfinished and bad taste in my mouth.

Actual rating 4.5 stars.This book consumed me. I read in one sitting, totally engrossed in the condition of the human soul and its ability to love.The spirit of A goes beyond gender and sexual identity and into a space of simply ‘being.’ It was such an amazing perspective on existence. Juxatpose that with the love interest, Rhiannon’s perception and interactions with A and her gradual understanding and acceptance of A, and their humanity, and you end up with a universal attitude of love and acceptance of everyone. It was truly inspired.On the other hand, being A was weird. Always the interloper, unsure of your very existence. It’s a hard place to be. Alone and transient. Enough to send you completely bonkers. But A finds a way to balance it all. A's own desires and wishes without impacting the lives of the bodies that are being borrowed for the day.I loved toe tone of zero prejudice about the physical being and of identity. I loved getting to walk, if somewhat briefly, in so many other people’s lives and feel that impact.While we only get the tiniest hint of the mythology behind A and his existence, the rest of the novel feels like a social commentary on identity and how we treat each other. How we are all different, yet the same. I wanted to get involved more into the reasons why A was the way he was – a wandering soul. I was hoping that in the sequel ‘Another Day’ I’d get more answers, but alas, only another brief touch on the mythology. I have my fingers crossed that we can really sink out teeth into the paranormal or science fiction of it all in the third book of the series ‘Someday’ due out on the 2nd of October this year. Not long to wait now!There’s not much to say about this novel. It’s a romance, a character study with a heavy dose of philosophy. I loved it. The concept so fresh in YA!It’s a beautiful quick read that I highly recommend. The movie does not do it justice, but is still great viewing – though it concentrates more on the romance than of the theme - what is a soul and what makes us human.
