Review

"This is what I want to hear. This is what I want to read from an author addressing Pagan cosmology. Travels Through Middle Earth may be the journey of 'a' Saxon Pagan, but I believe Albertsson represents 'the' Saxon Pagans quite honorably."―Witches & Pagans "Albertsson has brought to our shared table a new look at a long-gone faith. If you're interested in exploring other faiths, this book is a good choice."―Renaissance Magazine "Thorough and personal, the reader will gain a down-to-earth model for true spiritual practice and its rewards."―New Age Retailer "This book is a thorough and enjoyable voyage into the heart of modern Anglo-Saxon spirituality. With his breezy style and quick wit, the author displays a practical approach to this religion that is both fascinating and informative. I heartily recommend this book to everyone, particularly folks new to this path!"―Rev. Kirk S. Thomas, ADF Vice-Archdruid "Alaric shares a world of spirituality that is essentially the underpinning of much of the English-speaking world, influencing all our traditions, whether we realize it or not. Through this journey, he gives us the history, understanding, and tools to deepen our own path."―Christopher Penczak, author of The Mystic Foundation

The title of this book, Travels through Middle Earth: the Path of a Saxon Pagan is a little bit deceptive, in as much as the Middle Earth it speaks of is the Middle realm of Anglo-Saxon Norse mythology and not really Tolkien’s Middle Earth for the most part, although they are related, but still this is a good book on a subject, Saxon paganism, of which these elves knew little. As the author points out, however, all of those of us who have been reared with English as a primary language, whether one’s ancestors were Saxons or not, have an inherent connection to the Saxon culture. That is if one accepts the premise that language tends to guide thought and perspective. We wish this book had more of Saxon magic in it than it does, it is primarily about worship of the Saxon Gods (who are very like the Norse ones), but we found it quite illuminating anyway. And, it has a simple recipe for making Mead. How can you beat that? The Silver Elves authors of theFaerie Unfolding: The Cosmic Expression of the Divine Magic.

I really like this book. I’m new to the Saxon side of things, so it was nice to learn more about Saxon oriented paths. The book does a good job presenting a cosmological overview of the Saxon path. This book also goes over how to develop relationships with Gods, ancestors, and other spirits. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Saxon paganism. The only reason I gave it 4 stars is because the kindle version, has some issues. Randomly (especially in the beginning) you will find huge spaces between words that can interrupt the flow of reading. It’s more of a personal annoyance than anything and it doesn’t detract from the content of the book.

This is one of the best books on paganism I've read in a long time. It really spoke to me. I blasted through the entire book in a few days, then bought his other two books, and I'm reading them as well. I will return to this book and read it a bit more slowly to learn more on my next read.I wanted to study the Norse Gods, so I've read books on Asatru, but the path didn't speak to me as deeply as this one. I feel like I've come home. Check out this book if you are interested in the Norse pantheon, but haven't felt a calling to Asatru.

I enjoyed it. It's a quite comprehensive look at how Saxon neopagans practice their religion. There are a lot really interesting facts in it. For example, did you know that all of the days of the week are named after deities? This book is filled with interesting tidbits like that. You also get a look at how many of the ideas in Lord of the Rings were present in this mythology. Highly recommended.

I have read tons of books on Paganism in general, many about Druidry and Wicca, etc. This was a first for me relating to Saxon Paganism. It was an awesome read. I liked that there wasn't a lot about "magic" etc that is usually the same ol' thing you read in any book on Paganism. This is more about a particular tradition. In that way it was far more valuable as its content is unique, at least so far as I have read. The style is a very easy read, too. It's sort of like having a conversation with someone who is giving you a real-life explanation of his tradition and how it applies to Pagan practice today. The fact that Old English terms are used just makes it feel all the more "right". Reading this book felt so much like "coming home". I've already loaned it to a friend to read and will probably order another copy as I find myself already wanting to reference it while my friend still has it!If you're trying to figure out a path to follow, this book provides an excellent resource for you to determine if Saxon Paganism is for you. The impression I came away with is that individual groups (what Wiccans might call a coven or Druids a grove, etc) are more like "family units", "tribes", "clans" etc. They're not that different in concept I suppose, but this version just seems more family-like to me.Albertsson is writing another text: "Wyrdworking: The Path of a Saxon Sorcerer" - I understand that this one will be more about the magical practices in a Saxon context. So, I am anxiously awaiting its publication.

Travels Through Middle Earth is an honest, direct, make-no-bones-about-it book about Saxon paganism. It's written in a friendly, engaging style, with the history and lore to back up the author's commentary. I knew nothing about King Penda before reading this book, and Albertsson's telling of the tale makes me want to know more. The author takes the reader along with him on his journey of exploration, learning, and discovery. His discussions of history, lore, holidays, and even making mead make for an engaging and informative book. And while I'm not exactly big on most Llewellyn titles, this makes for a most excellent exception.Highly recommended.

I finally decided to get this book. I own a few books on Wicca and non-Wiccan witchcraft that have all been beneficial in some way or another. I've also read up on druidry and generic paganism. Ever since I began exploring pagan spirituality about four or five years ago I've wanted something more. Alaric Albertsson provides a fantastic and full introduction to Anglo-Saxon paganism that is heavy on the fundamentals to give anyone checking this path out a strong foundation. I will say that the book is to the point and does not usually wax poetic about the things it discusses. That's because it's an introduction to the tradition itself - for the flowery stuff, I'm going to be looking for myths and folklore directly (Albertsson mentions a few sources in the text and a bibliography is also provided). Anyway, I highly recommend and think this is a fantastic read!

I really enjoyed this book. Before reading it I did not know much about Saxon paganism. This book is readable, with few if any typos, and has a good glossary of unfamiliar terms. I especially appreciated the discussion of Saxon holy rites, the history of Saxon kings like Penda, and the role of groups in Saxon paganism.I hope the author writes more books on this subject.
