Tom Dowling wrote this book a long time ago, but for followers or fans of Vince Lombardi, this book captures of Vince Lombardi's unique vitality and desire for success. Dowling takes us through the course of Lombardi's one season coaching the Washington Redskins and Dowling was given intimate access to the team and Lombardi himself. The book also is a cultural study because the author interviewed many Washington players who were living in a turbulent time. The details of the view of the African American players was especially enlightening. Lombardi's roster moves, and their direct anxiety-provoking effect on the players in the locker room flavor Dowling's compelling journey of the 1969 Washington Redskins season. The Redskins had not had a winning season in fourteen years when Lombardi arrived in Washington, much like Green Bay's habitual losing before Lombardi arrived there in 1959. One wishes to know what would have happened to the Washington franchise had Lombardi's health not left him after his only season in Washington. Lombardi's brilliant meteoric trail winked out on Sept. 3, 1970; he died of colon cancer at the age of 57. Fans who knew him as a football coach will always remember his light; his players felt his glow of integrity and commitment, and knew Lombardi was all that a man could be.
..given the fact that its design and format are quite simple. This book tells the story of the 1969 Washington Redskin season, with Lombardi guiding the team to a 7-5-2 record, the first winning season in Washington for at least 15 years.Much more in-depth than any other Lombardi puff-piece, hero-worshipping book, the author also conducts about 20 interviews with players, with true-to-life discussions about life in and around the NFL.I don't know how puch publicity this book received when it first came out, but it is very, very underrated. You might not read a better book about professional sports, ever.
Tom Dowling's "Coach: :A Season With Lombardi" is an entirely enjoyable read for anyone who is a Vince Lombardi afficianado. He brings to life aspects of Mr. Lombardi's personality and beliefs that heretofore have received little or no emphasis.Throughout the book he continually separates the urban legends from actual truths letting the reader come away with the feeling that he knows Vince Lombardi not only as a coach but as a great humanitarian, one of the ground breakers in the civil rights movement of the 1960's.
enjoyable read
Ghastly. The style is amateurish and the author should be ashamed of his inaccuracy. He utterly destroys his own credibility in the opening pages by asserting that Bart Starr was illegally shoved over the goal line in the Ice Bowl. Films clearly show that he wasn't. Who allowed such falsehoods to be published/
this is the story of Vince Lombardis one season coaching the Washington Redskins and the last season he ever coached. Author Tom Dowling was given complete access to the Coaches and players as he chronicles the 1969 Redskins season. Vince Lombardi had taken a year off from coaching after 5 NFL championships and 2 Super Bowl victories with the Green Bay Packers. Missing the sidelines he became the Coach of the Redskins in a more high profile city than Green Bay and a less talented team that had not had a winning season in 14 years. With Coach Lombardis record of success there were high expectations for the team. The author takes you from training camp to the final game with interesting insights with the players from taxi-squadders to starters. While reading this book one is struck with the differences between the NFL of 1969 and the present day and whether a disciplinarian such as Vince Lombardi would have enjoyed as much success. Playing 6 exhibition games and 14 regular season games with 40 men on the roster the Redskins went 7-5-2 giving them a winning season and hope for the future. Unfortunately Lombardi died following the season and never got to finish the job. This is a fascinating look at Lombardi a devout Catholic and former Block of Granite at Fordham University. If you are interested in Lombardi, football in the 1960's and an admirer of discipline and what it can accomplish , you will enjoy. Highly recommended.
