Goingbeyond just the common recommendations for a living will or power of attorney, Charles really digs into topics Iwas unaware of (as I suspect many readers may be). For example, the straightfowrard discussions on the importanceof an autopsy, or how to petition the DSHS or request timely medical records, or understanding the protectionsoffered by the statutes of abuse of vulnerable adults, were very insightful. This book is a timely warning andempowering guide to protecting yourself and your loved ones.
While a resident of a skilled nursing facility, the author's mother suffered a stroke. The diagnosis and follow up actions by the facility, staff and hospital were wrongly directed and inadequate; death resulted. The story made me sad, angry and apprehensive. I think that anyone with a family member in a care facility has seen shortfalls and mistakes, but what happened here was tragic. I found the book useful for its treatment of "Physician's Orders For Life Sustaining Treatments" ie "POLSTs", Living Wills, Powers of Attorney, and "Vulnerable Adult" statutes. Examples are provided. The commentary on medical records access and health information rights was also useful. This is an emotional story, effectively told, as well as a collection of technical information.
This is a heartbreaking tale of wrongful death that the author has used to make everyone aware of the care and diligence that must be undertaken as we and our loved ones age. She provides advice and guidance to make certain that others do not suffer as her mother suffered.
