This book is a great mystery. There is evidence pointing in every direction, and I just love it! This is a story about a 11 year old boy who is a secret agent for the NY police who's name is Edmund (A.K.A. eddie red). He is taking a little 2 week vacation in Mexico when he has to jump into action to save his dad from going to jail. Will he go to jail or will it be to late. By the way the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because it felt a little short for me, then again I am 11.

Eddie Red is a character that inspires. He is talented in his art. He strives to make things right for his family and his community. He is a loyal friend. And he has a great voice. The plot rips along with lots of sharp turns and pitfalls. An exciting read.

I really enjoyed this book. I think it was as good as a Nancy Drew mystery. It was thrilling and kept you engaged from page 1. It was a page turning, thrilling novel that I highly recommend to people who like mystery's and thrillers. Eddie Red is so lovable much like this book.👍

Introduction Samhain is a great “Fire Festival” of the ancient Celts, celebrated at the official close of the harvest. By Samhain all the produce of the fields must be safely gathered into the house and barn and anything left in the fields after this date is the property of the Good Neighbors (the Sidhe) and not to be touched by mortals. It is an old Celtic tradition to leave offerings for the Fairies on this potent Spirit night. Samhain marks the end of the Celtic year and after a three-day observance, the beginning of the next agricultural cycle. Just as a seed begins its existence in the dark of the soil, so does the New Year begin in the dark of winter, which is the time to rest, take stock of the past year’s accomplishments, and dream in future goals. For the ancient Celts there were only two seasons: summer and winter. The festivals of Samhain and Beltaine (May Day) were portals between two spheres of existence, the dark half of the year and the light half of the year, times of chaos when the Otherworld more easily bled through. Samhain, like Beltaine (May Day) was a potent Spirit night, a liminal time when the walls between the worlds were thin and ancestral Spirits roamed the Earth. It was a good time for divination and contact with the Otherworld. Chapter 2. Herbs of Protection and Why We Might Need Them According to Celtic tradition the dead come to visit the living at Samhain, especially in the dark of night. A welcome is extended to these wandering dead by leaving a door open, setting an extra plate of food at the table, and by placing an extra seat near the hearth. Candles are lit and placed in windows and doorways to light the way home for departed ancestors. But it is understood that not all these ancestors are happy and that some might come to take revenge for slights inflicted upon them in their previous life. Ghosts are known to seek out and follow those with whom they have a grudge and if one hears footsteps behind them it can be deadly to turn around and look. If you have to be outside it is wise to go in disguise so as not to be recognized by vengeful Spirits. Periwinkle, Sorcerer's Violet, Flower of Immortality, Flower of Death Vinca minor, Vinca major The woodland ground covers known as Lesser and Greater Periwinkle have the same medicinal properties. The herb and flower tea are used for diarrhea, gastritis, heavy menstruation, bleeding between periods and other hemorrhages, and as a gargle for tonsillitis and sore throat. Periwinkle is sedative and beneficial for nervous conditions. The tea is used as a wash for eczema, wounds and inflammations. A poultice of the plants is applied to cramps. Use it in salves for hemorrhoids and for inflammations. *Caution: taking large amounts could harm the kidneys and nervous system, upset digestion, and cause hypertension. Avoid during pregnancy and breast feeding. Periwinkle can cause irritation to the skin in some people. Periwinkle is said to be a charm against “Evil Spirits” and was once made into crowns for dead children. Wear the herb or hang it over the door and on gateposts to repel evil spirits and ill intentioned sorcery. “In France the plant was placed in a buttonhole it was thought to keep evil spirits away. In some areas, it was added to both wedding and funeral wreaths… The flower is called by the Italians Centocchio, or 'Hundred Eyes,' but it is also called 'The Flower of Death,' from the ancient custom of making it into garlands to place on the biers of dead children. To the Germans, it is the 'Flower of Immortality’… In Italy wreaths bound by Periwinkle were placed around the neck of condemned men, before their execution.” Periwinkle at Samhain Make a wreath of Periwinkle and hang it on your door. Drape it over gates and windowsills as protection against ill-intentioned Spirits. Mandrake Mandragora officinalrum, M. vernalis, M. autumnalis The ancient Greeks considered this plant to be an aphrodisiac. They also used it to help with insomnia, anxiety, depression and as a general pain remedy. *Caution - Mandrake should not be taken internally more than once a week and larger doses could be fatal. Mandrake contains trance-inducing tropane alkaloids. Ancient Egyptian paintings sometimes show priest-shamans guiding the living and the dead, accompanied by both Mandrake and Sacred Blue Lotus (Nymphaea caerulea). Sacred Blue Lotus is aphrodisiac, euphoriant, slightly mind altering, and helps to alleviate pain. The flowers are brewed as tea or soaked in wine. Mandrake protects against demonic possession and is used in exorcisms. To activate a root first display it prominently in the home for three days then soak it in water overnight. Sprinkle the water on entrances, windows, and people. Left on the mantle it attracts prosperity and happiness to the house. While digging the root avoid touching it because the first person to do so will likely die (This is why dogs were once used to pull it from the Earth). Mandrake roots are used as poppets for good or ill. To make a poppet take a root that looks like a person, decorate it to make it more closely resemble your “target” and then focus blessings or curses on the homunculus. Mandrake at Samhain Display a Mandrake root in your home for three days; the day before Samhain, the day of Samhain, and the day after. Then soak it in water overnight and use the water to sprinkle entrances, exits, and windows. Leave the root on display afterwards.

This book was published in 2006 but is still a very useful history of King Bhumidol's reign. It runs over 450 pages with smallish font, but it reads like a mystery thriller.Please do not be put off by the first chapter which reads like a philosophy tract on Buddhism. A very well researched look at the Thai monarchy, particularly the unprecedented reign of King Bhumibol. The book is banned in Thailand, certainly it a critical though I believe quite balanced.I would really like to see an update, given the turmoil in Thailand since it was published in 2006, to cover former Prime Minister Shinawatra's dismissal (and subsequent further controversy) plus coups and red shirt/yellow shirt protests, as well as further speculation of what will become of the monarchy and Thai politics after the king passes away.

Having lived in Thailand for two lengthy periods since 1965, I knew some of the basics. Mr. Handley has filled in details in highly credible fashion and produced as complete a picture of not only the monarchy but Thai politics as I have seen anywhere. The book is especially good on the ways that much of the belief system of ordinary Thais has been constructed for them by the palace and other royalist institutions and individuals. It's no wonder that North Korea's Kim Jong Il, himself no slouch as a propagandist, has pointed to the Thai system as one of the few foreign models he admires.-Bradley K. A great and necessary insight into a country that I love so much and yet that has its own dilemmas to resolve. A necessary effort at lifting the veil of secrecy that needs to be overcome if Thailand is to move forward in its progress to a truly democratic international and open community. Shameful that the book and its author have been banned in TH.

What a great effort. I was interested in getting some historical context so that I could understand the potential changes coming to Thailand in the near future when Rama IX dies. He has been a remarkable king and very likely the last of his kind in the world. This book provides valuable insights. In Thailand, as in Burma and other SE Asian countries, it is critical to learn the country's history to understand today's politics because, fundamentally, nothing has changed.I would really love to see a new edition that picks up where this one left off with the coup that forced Thaksin from power, some background on the Yellow shirts and Red shirts, the demographic evolution of Thailand and similar. Thailand has some of the most interesting politics of any country in the world and, like a good "soap opera" I can't stop watching!

It's bizarre that I, an American living in the United States, hesitate to post this review. That basically summarizes the current perverse situation created by the Thai monarchy. I fear my various connections to Thailand will be blocked if I state a simple opinion: That this is a great book. Fascinating. Even-handed. I highly recommend it. The picture of King Bhumipol (pronounced "Pumipon") presented here is both sympathetic and critical. From this biography, I conclude that King Bhumipol is the best-case-scenario king. He took his job seriously, is hard working and talented, empathetic, dedicated to the welfare of the people. However, he is a king, and monarchy is still a bad choice relative to democracy for all the reasons outlined by Thomas Paine 230 years ago in "Common Sense," which is freely available online. (I hope that book is not banned in Thailand; this one is.) Even the best king cannot magically know the will of the people. It seems that this king, in trying to be the best possible king, came to believe his own hype: that he can magically know the will of the people, so the people are represented through him. Therefore, democracy was/is not a big priority for him. As Handley explains, King Bhumipol ruled through the Cold War; because stability was his primary concern, he has downplayed the importance of democracy and delayed the transition to full democracy. Also, as pointed out in "Common Sense," good kings may be followed by horrible kings. `Nuff said on that point. OK, there it is. We have free speech in this country and I will use that freedom. Let the chips fall where they may.

A well researched book about a man revered by his people. Lese majeste laws would prevent this from being written within the Kingdom. If you're looking for an outside perspective, this is a good place to start.

I have traveled to Thailand many times as a tourist and have to admit falling victim to the image of the king that is projected within the country. This books gives a detailed analysis of how this image was built and how it is used to maintain modern day Thailand. There is a LOT of detail in this book...more than I needed to know. It seemed very thorough. There was some redundancy. I had problems remembering all of the long Thai names presented in this book. But, in the end, it didn't matter. The book seems to hold a lot of truths that were not accessible to me elsewhere. I will no longer travel to Thailand as the naive tourist but will now understand the machinations behind the facade. Thank you for a very good read.

Noelle is a narrator and her main source of income is working for Alex's company. They have never met in person, and their only source of communication is via the phone and emails. The very first time Alex heard Noelle's voice, it caused something to stir within him and the constant communication with her has is entire being in turmoil. His main thought is wishing that he had met her before his accident and if he did not feel like his presence would have her running in the opposite direction, he would have persued her from the beginning.Noelle has been hooked on Alex voice from the beginning and would love nothing more than to meet him. Eventually a situation arises that gave her the opportunity to finally meet Alex and nothing has prepared her for his reception and the emotions he brings out in her.

This was a good read.The heroine is a true introvert. She keeps to herself and makes a living reading books for audiotape. The hero is a recluse. He was involved in a vehicular accident that left him disfigured. He became a hermit to get away from all the stares. However, he was able to build and manage a company that finds people to read books for audio. He falls in love with the heroine and contracts her for several spicy reads. he is also a little stalkerish. He has many fears and is very insecure since his accident, so he never makes a direct move. The heroin decides to make the first move under the pretense of turning in an audio before a deadline. She does a lot of the chasing in this book at first, but once the hero gets past his insecurities the love story picks up. It is a safe read, sweet love story and spicy love scenes. These two are perfect for each other. Highly recommend it.

This book was probably the most cheesiest romance, but probably one of the sweetest I think I've ever read!Noelle is a very shy and private person. She's an introvert born to the most social of parents. She makes her living reading audiobooks for Alex. He's been the star of all her fantasies, but she's sure a man that sounds like him won't go for someone like her.The only good part of Alex's day is getting to listen to Noelle read samples of books. He's so addicted by her voice he refuses to send in her files and finds someone else to read the books. He's convinced a woman with a voice as smooth as silk would never go for somebody so scarred up and imperfect like him.When these two introverts come together you can't help but smile and hope for the best for these two. This is probably my favorite book from Alexa so far!

In Snow and Mistletoe both Alex and Noelle fall in love with each other's voice. I kind of get how a voice can get you hot and bothered. For me one of the sexiest talking voices is that guy who is the commentator/narrator of The Deadliest Catch - Mike Rowe. When it comes to a singing voice - Eddie Vedder or Dean Martin. Mind you, I don't know if I'd fall in love with them because of it, but they certainly give me a chill up my spine.So the story is about an audio narrator named Noelle who falls for her boss. They've only ever spoken on the phone, but she feels a connection to him. The chats they have make her feel closer to him.Alex would love to have Noelle in his life but he has made himself almost a hermit because of scars he has. He doesn't think he's good enough for her and keeps their contact to phone calls.When they finally meet Alex doesn't want Noelle to see him. Eventually they are able to get past Alex's insecurities and the hip grinding frenzy begins.This story is sweet just as much as it's sexy. I'm thinking I'm Alexa Riley's newest fan and I will definitely be reading more in the future.

The history of the Oregon Trail is filled with death and destruction and many tails told in the twist of the tong, some not true at all others brought forth as a fable with little substance of truth. As a historian on Eastern Oregon and Westward Migration much that has been told about the trip and what happened at the Whitman all to often is told in the venue of half truths. This book, "Orphaned on the Oregon Trail" will add to any dedicated reader more of the experience of coming west and of the Whitman Mission and its purpose and insight into those that arrived there almost at the point of starvation, children 2 to 16 years of age, no parents, cared for by the wagon train families headed West. This book is a good read for all ages and I enjoyed it from start to finish and have now passed it on to my grandchildren. The text is shallow in the events of what happened at the Whitman Mission but the intent was to tell the story of the 7 children orphaned on the trail West. To gain a fuller understanding of the Whitman tragedy I suggest reading the five Volume series, "Thunder Over the Ochoc's" and Frontier Genocide of the Native People.

Has printing errors. Things like dates and just random words in text are inaccurate. Compared to original hardcover book and printing and there are inconsistencies, errors in printing, dates are inaccurate.

I read this book cover to cover in one sitting. The children displayed remarkable character living through loss of family, having to adjust to a new family only to lose them in a most horrible situation. This book draws you into the characters, helping you to realize what day to day life was over a century ago, what settlers endured in hardships, illness and the threat of being brutally murdered. Interesting book, but some of the death description would be difficult for children to hear or read about.

I bought this book for my 8-year old son and I to read together because we are both interested in the Oregon Trail. The story is all the more interesting and emotional because it's based on the true story of seven kids who lose both parents as they move west as part of a wagon train. The trials and tribulations of the family and their adoptive parents brings history alive in a way children can relate to, albeit with sadness and tragedy involved. Some very emotional children might have a hard time with the deaths and killing in the story, but the characters' ability to survive it is a great lesson in human resiliency and courage. The fates of the children are included at the end of the book, so the reader's attachment to them is fulfilled by learning of their lives after the story ends.

Great book, terrific read aloud with my 4th grade class during our study of the Westward Expansion and the Oregon Trail!

My maiden name is Sayger and my GGGGGG Uncle is the character in this book who takes his family on the Oregon Trail. I read it to my mother (92) and she loved it. Great story, very moving and for me, a real eye opening experience into the history of my family.

i must say this was a very passionate and thoughtful installment of Zandian Masters. It has all the adventure and rawness of the ones before but it has more because the characters are the same but different. Tomis is a virile warrior of the Zandians. He fought hard and trained even harder to be in the fight to regain his lost home of Zandia. Talia is a Zandian but doestn't know who she is.Once her and Tomis get together an plethora of EVERYTHING occurs. Wild. Hot. Exciting. WIth that helathy dose of love and affection thrown in. This is an incredible read with all the right feels. Definitely 5 STAR worthy and high recommend

Great plot, it would have been a 5 but there is a part where our female MC I swear got hit with the dump stick when she senses possible issues with some other individuals and instead of following the guidance from the guy protecting her she goes against him because she is so caught up in her head. Other than that it was awesome.

This series was so good I could not wait for each book to come out, I enjoyed each book in this series, hope more is written, I would recommend this these books to all my friends that like reading these kind of books. I could not put the book down.

These books are good because of the continuity. I love how new characters are introduced and how the intense connection is between the couples. At the end of each book I'm asking "Okay what is going to happen next?" Romantic soap opera all the way.
