David M. Buss received his Ph.D. from the University of California at Berkley in 1981. He began his career in academics at Harvard, later moving to the University of Michigan before accepting his current position as Professor of Psychology at the University of Texas. I really enjoyed this book. Gave a refreshing reintroduction of the evolutionary psychology concepts that began its foundations. This book is outdated, but the research is solid and I enjoy the fight of modern biological/social psychologists arguing for empirical data to be used tied to biological concepts and I believe this book has inspired that idea. If you are someone who believe gender is a myth and socially constructed to indoctrinate the system, this is not the book for you.

Gave me a new depth of perception in regards to human behavior. Connected a lot of dots and made me realize some things I wish I didn't know.

Super complete, with a lot of scientific proofs behind his teachings,one of the best books on planet earth!

This book is in a college curriculum and it shows. Very good layout of the contents in the chapters whereas the chapters cover a broad range of topics in this area. Very informative.

What a great textbook! I purchased the third addition when I took a course on evolutionary psychology as an undergrad, and that class ended up being one of the most fascinating I took while at school. Recently, I purchased the 5th addition to help with a book that I'm writing and the material is just as fascinating as before. Perfect literature review and synthesis if you're curious about the subject, or anything related to sociology and anthropology. It's full of amazingly interesting facts on things such as aggression, coalition-forming, gender differences, mating strategies, and parental investment. It's also a great source for peer reviewed articles as the're cited throughout the book.

The text I have is the second edition from 2003. Given that the field is relatively new, I suspect the newest edition has expanded a lot on the earlier ones. I give the book four stars because it is a good textbook, but Buss seems to be stretching things out to get to 30 pages in several of the chapters, even going so far as to say the same thing and cite the same studies in different chapters. It was a very easy to read text and was actually very similar to my "Animal Behavior" text by Alcock, and in fact, I would say that is a better text than this one for understanding evolutionary psychology. Again, I suspect later editions of "Evolutionary Psychology" have more human specific papers to cite than the 2003 edition (which relied heavily on animal studies), but I don't know.Overall a decent text and highly insightful for anyone new to the field.

Professor Buss has taken upon himself the formidable challenge of producing the first evolutionary psychology textbook, a milestone that is long overdue. In his endeavor he has succeeded magnificently. In 411 pages he manages a sterling job of covering the most important topics in evolutionary psychology, bringing to bear the most up to date literature in a simple to read yet academically compelling format. He begins with a complete and intelligent introduction to both evolutionary theory and the events leading to the development of an evolutionary psychology. Thereafter, he covers broad branches of human behavior - kin relations, cooperative relationships, warfare, aggression, status-seeking, parenting and, of course, human mating strategies. This last topic is covered in several different chapters and highlights the author¹s own valuable, ground-breaking work done in the area. His book provides a miraculous combination of both utterly fascinating and effortless reading, rare qualities in textbooks. No review can be complete without mention of a few blemishes, however minor and in this case it is particularly tempting to simply omit them entirely. However, Dr. Buss occasionally relies heavily, too heavily perhaps, on secondary or general sources of information (i.e., Dawkins, de Waal, Pinker) when more research oriented sources are available. No doubt this stems, at least in part, from the fact that there is simply not as much primary literature on the subject as one could hope for (at least where humans are concerned). This will undoubtedly be improved by the time the next edition rolls off the press. Too, one would greatly hope that future editions of this text might include a section on foraging/hunting and food adaptations since they are so fundamental to survival and because so many other primate species display overt and well-studied feeding adaptations. However, such minor details are utterly dwarfed by the magnitude, importance and quality of this work. The breadth, depth and timeliness of this textbook cannot be overstated. If you are planning on teaching an undergraduate course on evolutionary psychology or are simply interested in learning more about the subject, this is, without question, the most authoritative and comprehensive vehicle available, eclipsing even the extraordinary Adapted Mind.

This book by Shaun Usher is a pleasant compilation of such notes flooding vicissitudes of humankind. It is a sequence to his bestseller Letters of Note, which is a riveting compendium of letters of all kinds throughout the history of the world. Mr. Usher, who is very keen on collecting personal correspondence of people, has indeed again exerted great effort and time to make this project possible through the support of his fans via Unbound com, an organization which has helped writers publish their works since the 18th Century in England.The book contains some very intriguing notes as follows: (1) Bill of Mortality which tells of the kinds of ailment English people of the 17th century died from, (and the reader will be surprised to find that one of the common causes of death was abscess); (2) an ancient Egyptian worker's notes on his absences recorded on a limestone; (3) Leonardo Da Vinci's notes on what he would need to research for the anatomy of a man, Michaelangelo's notes on a list of food he wanted to eat with adorable pictures accompanied during his traveling to and from Pietrasanta to extract marble used for the Basilica of San Lorenzo; (4) Sir Isaac Newton's list of notes revealing his peevishness with his mother and father, striking his sister and servant and neglecting to listen to a Sunday sermon in church.; (5) Mark Twain's list of note showing all the food he wanted to eat at home upon his returning from a long European trip; (6) Marilyn Monroe's resolution to attend her new acting class without fail and to enroll in an English Literature class; and Jack Kerouac's note to his friend for writing tips in which he asserted free writing without grammatical, syntactical, and literary inhibition. These are just a few notable excerpts from the book, and the reader will have no time for boredom in reading this book.This is a quick read which one can enjoy without having to analyze the contents of the notes. The only foible about this read in Kindle version is that the original script of some of the notes are not clearly shown due to a mechanical aspect of the device. For this reason, it will be better to own a hard copy of the book as the notes are pictured in their entirety, so that the reader can see clearly the writing styles and discern the personalities and characters of the notetakers to a certain extent. The reader will realize that the act of note-taking, however simplistic and insignificant it may seem, is in fact a way of sketching the flow of thought from the world full of things assorted and flowing without a sense of purpose for composite significance.

Other reviewers' criticisms are valid and I can see where they're coming from, but I thoroughly enjoyed this book -- and calling it 'eclectic' gives the compiler a lot of leeway!This is a great book to leave out for guests to peruse. These lists are mostly by notable figures from a while ago -- public domain maybe?There are great curiosities. and chances to see a mind at work, such as Walt Disney's list of 50 possible dwarf names, including Dirty (!), Neurtsy (?) and Shifty -- what horrible dwarves! There's also Edison's list of names for the phonograph (sphygmophone!) and Coppola's list of possible actors for The Godfather -- Peter Falk as Sonny Corleone!?Some are charming, others intriguing, like Edison's to-do list. There's a list of workers' absences from 1250 BCE, and there are lists by Marilyn Monroe and Albert Einstein, Whitman, Thoreau, Galileo and Thelonious Monk, Darwin, Vonnegut, David Foster Wallace Sid Vicious and many others.Often an image of the original artifact is included, so you can see the handwriting, and each entry has a paragraph or two of backstory. The book concludes with an adequate index.I expect to write in this book, and hope guests will too.

Interesting book if you like this sort of thing, which I do. You're bound to find some interesting things. My favorite, so far, is Benjamin Franklin's list of words for inebriation.

If you are just getting into Instructional Design (ID) this is the perfect starter book! If you are an ID you will recognize the processes and theories explored throughout. The book is well organized and covers the daily duties and more in the typical role of the ID. This is a "hands-on" book and should be by the side of the working ID. It does explore the theories in enough depth to get the budding ID started and it also gives a good background into e-learning. You will also find some great examples of tools and software that are essential to the working ID. Finally, you will be introduced to the future of virtual worlds and the great opportunities that are opening up in the field of Instructional Design.

Very quick and easy read. It is a good overview for building training for adults. It doesn't dive too deep into methods. It merely touches on them. I recommend this for those new to the training field.

Prior to reading this book I wasn't aware that it was a process to training. This book has assisted tremendously with my introduction to Instructional Design!

The inkbrush art style really calls back to ancient calligraphic traditions while framing an account of one person who lived through the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and Deng's Reform Movement. It also remains authentically personal with memorable characters, settings, (and food) set across over 50 years of a life.While Otie and Li take pains to keep the work neutral especially for the first two-thirds of this great volume, bear in mind that Li was a member of the state at varying levels and a believer in many of the ideas although he also maintains a very pragmatic perspective on both the big picture and the effects on the individual.It's probably one of the best autobiographical works, graphic novel or not, I've read and absolutely recommended whether your interest is in China, the art, a life, or many of the other rich themes this work explores.

I'm already 150 pages into this book after my first sit down with it, and I love it. The story goes into detail about the life of a young Chinese citizen and their role during the Cultural Revolution. Illustrations are done well and the dialogue is great. I will definitely be reading more graphic novels by this author.I will say that it helps to have some idea of Chinese History to fully grasp and understand this story, or even believe that it actually happened. There are some parts of this story that will make your jaw drop. Perfect for any history lover or someone interested in Asian culture.

An autobiography that gives an interesting insight into China's history and its effect on the average Chinese. Political propoganda and nationalism is very destructive - not only to the individual, but the entire human community.

A nice collaboration between a Chinese artist and a French collaborator ( it is so easy to use the word collaborator when speaking about all things French!)Fascinating to hear about life in China from the point of view of a son of the privileged. I highly recommend this book as a good tool to put together the mosaic that is so foreign to most of us.

As a teacher of modern Chinese History, I cannot recommend this graphic novel too much both in terms of its content and the arresting quality of its graphic art. I have read few things that conveyed so well the tremendous changes endured (and also enjoyed) by the Chinese people over the last 64 years.

A great book, great drawings, worth while, beauty of drawings in this graphic novel was so moving. Its a wonderful history of China contemporary with great turns and changes and unexpected outcomes. I loved the book and highly recommend it.

I am so happy to know this book. Each anecdote helps me to understand Modern Chinese history and cultural background.

- The book is well written- Easy to understand- Covers most of the issues concerning videography with a DSLR as well as other Cameras- Pricey, but if you want quality work, this is a great reference book- Probably goes into a lot more detail than the average person wants, but true film makers are highly detailed people- This book is definitely NOT for the person who just want to shoot home videos of the family- I believe this book is better suited for someone who actually plans to make serious videos/films or who plans to make money such as with weddings, corporate clients, parties, ect.Note: I have multiple books on photography and videography. Authors of these books have camera preferences. No one starting out usually has the money to buy the top of the line Canon and the top of the line Nikon, ect. I shoot with a Canon Rebel 650D T4i and I can learn (and have learned) from and author that shoots with a Nikon D300. I get no impression from this book that this is a Canon Ad. This book would be 2000 pages if every major camera was addressed.Note 2: Yes...This book is for semi-pros (person who is trying to get into the business) and pros. This is not geared towards the novice. The book is 416 pages. Usually books this size are serious books. That alone should send up a Red Flag that this might be a little intense. Coming from photography to video, i needed advice. Although it is possible that you can find everything on this book online, it takes you a long time since everything is all over the place. This book is a great guideline and a "Handbook" to carry around. It has all DSLR video information in one little packet covering from auido, stability, formats, and everything else you need to know about shooting films/vidoe with DSLR. I shoot with a 50D with magic lantern and a 6D and this book seems to lean towards Canon DSLR so that also was a plus.

I got this book for two reasons first, because I know people who know the writer, and second because I needed a crash course in DSLR video making. This book is not a standard how-to book for beginners wanting to learn some basic video skills. It is more for the highly skilled DSLR photographer who is interested in shooting Hollywood style movies with the great new digital SLR cameras. Since I don't currently have a screen play and a bunch of actors chomping at the bit to bring it to the big screen this book is out of my league. Maybe someday, but in the mean time I need more basic information for shooting decent school events and the like. I'll keep this book because the information is interesting and insightful but I'm also ordering the book "How to Shoot Video that Doesn't Suck" for some more practical, everyday sort of advice.

Very thorough, well written. I use a Canon 5D Mark III and have been shooting video a long time as a semi-pro. Although, through experience, I knew 90% of what is contained in the book, it is very good information for anyone who is semi-pro or below.

This read has important information on what is needed to build a movie, plan a movie, and then the process for execution.

I began to study film at school and was pretty clueless on basically everything about DSLRs. A class required this as a textbook/reference guide and it has helped me through a lot. Not only with picking out a suitable DSLR but other accessories that are needed with filmmaking - whether it be with a DSLR or camcorder. I highly recommend this to anyone who's just starting out with film. It'll get you familiarized with terms and basic objects you will be seeing/using a lot.

The main weakness I have noticed is very poor technical photographic notes. It seems to be an combination of lack of knowledge and poor technical proofreading. Everyone thinks they are a photographer, these days. Nothing wrong with a lack of knowledge, but if you're publishing a book, spend a little money to have experts proofread for technical errors. Students, you have been warned.

Read this book from cover to cover! I loved it! Helped make my video productions better and especially when it comes to what kind of equipment I should/shouldn't have! I recommend this to anyone who is striving to be a better film maker! =)
