Interesting on the development and longevity of the B52 (up to 2040!).How it managed to replace the not successful B47 so quickly and the lessons learned from the severe aircraft losses thereof by the Cold War Warriors is remarkable. Several fundamental lessons learned quickly in the “furnace†of the Cold War is a possibility like the change from high level to low level bombing but nonetheless the Buff is what it is. From Iron Bombs to Fire & Forget. From Korea to Iraq. Good read.
Good, complete history of this SAC mainstay - still serving 50 years after the last one was built. As always with his books, complete description of variants and versions. Good history of B-52 operations in Viet Nam and the Gulf wars. Discussions of how aircraft and units were shifted around and re-named sometimes gets a little tedious.
This was a good history of the B-52, but presented in a dry fact based style. If you were not a Cold War Warrior you probably won't enjoy this book. I used it to codify my service in SAC. I did like that Bowman gave each aircraft's multiple names; as they were transferred to different Wings they were often re-named, or named after a WWII bomber. Also, the appendices contained the specifics on each modification, various weapons, model types and the tail numbers of every B-52 ever produced.
As a former B-52 gunner, I wasn't bored by the technical details. But, it does have a few editorial issues. And it didn't make the transition to kindle smoothly, charts, and some photos are unreadable. I'll keep itfor oldtimes sake and portability.
ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS THAT I HAVE READ ON THE B52!!!!
This book is exactly what the title says. Anything you might want to know about the B 52 is here. All the models and modifications are covered very well. Very well illustrated. A few personal stories are included, but it is really all about the plane. It had a good bibliography and index. I recommend it.
Excellent review of the operational history of the BUFF. Great details of the different configurations of the jet and the reasons they came to be.
Especially interedting for me because I had the priveleliged of flying with the B-52 crews while performing my duties as a Flight Surgeon at Fairchild AFB In the early 70's.
