This is a book I struggled with. Overall, I love the general idea of the book: simplifying the ministry of the church to more effectively disciple people in their Christian walks. But there were a few elements which gave me pause:First, the emphasis upon research data. They touch on the fact that a healthy church is not about numbers, but about people living as God called them, but that acknowledgement is buried beneath chapter and chapters which point towards the size or numerical growth of a church as an indicator of whether or not it was healthy. I love research data, but there were also times when their research indicated that there were a decent amount of churches which did not meet their definition of "simple" yet were still thriving. This latter reality did not seem to be addressed. I would have appreciated at least a chapter or (minimally) a few pages discussing why this might "work." But most troubling, the emphasis upon data instead of an emphasis upon what a healthy spirituality looks like.Second, there is minimal scriptural support for the principles expressed in the book. This is the most troubling to me. While scripture is quoted and referenced (in some chapters more sparingly than others), upon a closer examination frequently the scripture doesn't actually support or advocate the point. It is used illustratively or to support a peripheral point supporting the main thesis of the chapter. All this adds up to a "sense" of scriptural support, but without there really being too much solid, scriptural exegesis supporting the points of the book. The research data supports it, but the scriptural support is weak (in this, I'm referring to what is communicated in the book; Rainer and Geiger are smart guys, and I'm sure they have more scriptural support than they actually communicated in the book).Third, I was sorely disappointed by the lack of an articulation of any sort of ecclesiology in the book. I think this flows from the first two problems mentioned above. Better scriptural support would have led them to summarize scripture in a theological manner, which would have led to at least a minimal articulation (a single chapter, at least) outlining primary biblical elements of a church. For what this book was arguing. With the subtitle "Returning to God's Process for Making Disciples" a failure to adequately point towards some biblical foundations for discipleship for a church (even if these would be general values) is a pretty huge oversight. This book is, at best, a book focusing on leadership principles for leading a religious organization. But the leadership principles advocated are more commercially based than scripturally founded.Lastly, the writers refer to themselves as "nerds" and the book as a "nerdy" book. As a "nerd" myself, I found the simplistic writing style of the book insulting and ultimately detrimental to the book's argument. The simplicity glossed over elements which needed a deeper treatment. I suspect the simple writing style was an attempt for the execution of the argument to match the title, but as a pastor who wanted to really dig his teeth into this idea, I was left with more questions than answers. The reason I really wrestle with recommending this book, and why (in the end) I gave it four stars instead of three, is that overall the book does advocate some good principles which actually have some scriptural merit. Unfortunately I think the book over-values its research data (an entirely different cultural and social problem in the West), and that undercuts how a leader should be truly evaluating his/her church: through eyes and values shaped by scriptures. Rainer and Geiger do not deny the latter (they actually advocate it in the postscript), but their practice in the book elevates data points over scriptural exegesis. Can it be a helpful book? Yes...but it need to be balanced with other books that do proper exegetical and ecclesiological book. This book would probably best be used after studying books that do the proper scriptural and theological work, because then the ideas contained in Simple Church could be critiqued and analyzed in light of the scriptural and exegetical work that has already been explored.

I should write an elaborated review of this book. But alas, time.Overall, the intention of the 2 authors is solid and helpful for certain church applications. One thing that these two guys do well is pushing the mandate for making disciples. As it is, well, a mandate. The American church does a horrid job of bringing this transformation to our countrymen. My major letdowns with the book are three-fold:1. The thinking is very well-developed, but the writing is painfully repetitive, even in the first three chapters. By the time you reach chapter six, it's unbearable. I can see the value in repeating information that's brand-new to some older folks. But this goes way beyond what's necessary.2. My second letdown with the book may have to do with the authors' generations. They do a fanatastic job in celebrating the various ways "simple church" can be applied broadly across the body. But when it comes down to it, it vastly oversimplifies the diversity in that same body, and completely overlooks God's designing these tens of thousands of communities differently, on purpose. After reading thru, their approach is good but applies a one-size-fits-all approach to making churches simple. Fine. But there is a huge loss in individuality as under their guidance, it seems churches would lose sight of the niche things they were created for.3. A third thing: although the Sunday church may not disappear any time soon, they state in the book the worldwide bricks and mortar church is in great decline. That is clear and well-documented for two decades now.But they don't seem to address why. Old, simplistic church models and old mindsets seem to be the reason. The younger generation wants less and less to do with a Sunday service, or any formal service, regardless of how "innovative" they may appear. So the whole model of "inviting people to church" presumably to get saved and be transformed (made into disciples) is horribly outdated and painfully oblivious of the modern culture we all live in. And by the way, Jesus told [us] to go. Not to tell others to [come] to church.Ah, the comfort mindset of our people.I'm sorry for the criticisms. Though these authors do a decent, albeit cumbersome, job in explaining the simple church approach, it's almost like: too little too late for our generation. We need models for doing community [outside] the four walls rather than new models for getting people to come to a bland and demeaning and disrespected existence. Just because a simple church may appear to be thriving doesn't indicate that they're doing all they were designed to do. We settle for so little, it's disheartening to watch.Cmon people, God never intended the Body of Christ to beckon the world to tie themselves to the four wall model. The most powerful transformation doesn't happen in the Sunday services anyway. The authors even say that Sunday's aren't where real community happens. Transformation (not just for church-goers, but for the rest of the world) happens when the church dispersed and made themselves useful [in] the world, not by camping out on Sundays (or midweek). ie: God forcing them out of their comfortable lifestyles into the needy world by sending Roman persecution on them. There's a lot to be said for getting discipled on-the-way when you're already in motion [outside] the church and productive in the world.Ok, the book is fine. It's a decent read for those stuck in church, especially if they lack cohesive vision and a simple strategy for discipling. But it would've been better back in the 1960's and 70's when churches stared to get too complicated. These days, I'd say it's a very basic starting point. For other world-focused believers and ministries, "simple church" can help streamline your thought processes. But please apply it and move on. There's so much to do and so little time.

This is another great book by Thom Rainer! I am a new comer, functioning as Associate Pastor, at a church that fits the description of both the Simple Church and of a "Break-Out Church" (see Rainer's book on the subject). The senior pastor has been at the church for over 20 years and when I arrived, I was excited to share with him that I believed the church fit the description of a break-out church. Then I read Simple Church (actually listened to it on Audible) and told the pastor about how the church fit the description. The pastor said that he had taken the congregation through that book and that they really enjoyed it. The insights and principles shared in this book work! I see it everyday at Mt. Calvary!

Okay, in fairness, we've only used this book for a day. But, after flipping through it, I'm really pleased with what I see and think it'll meet our needs perfectly. Some thing I like about it-The pages are clear and bite-sized. No overwhelming rows upon rows of practice. The pages for word practice are full pages, but the font is large. (See pictures.)Rather than dots to copy over, there are trails to follow (in between the font lines). I don't know why this would make a difference, but I like it.Lastly, I really like how when they move on to connecting the letters into words, the individual letters for each word are practiced once again, before following the pathway to connect them into words, and then, finally, practicing the words on your own.Gray product!

An awesome book to teach kids cursive handwriting. Recently, I've heard that the schools nearby where we live are no longer teaching cursive. I'm not sure if that's happening elsewhere or just in our area, but I remember being taught cursive at a very young age when I went to school. I found this book and based off the reviews I'd figured to order it. I'm glad I did! A lot of pages to learn how to write cursive, easy step by steps, big open spaces for the kids to write, and the pages are thick. I got this for my three young ones and I'm very sure they will be able to learn it very easily. I plan to buy this author's other cursive writing books for my kids.

Both of my kids really enjoy this book. They're having fun learning cursive, and it seems to progress at just the right pace for them. (My son is in 6th grade, but never learned cursive. It's not too "young" for him.)

My wife is practicing her handwriting after a stroke. It works well for her

My son is nearing the end of 2nd grade, and I am not sure if schools still teach cursive (I have heard a lot don't), but I still want my son to learn it, so since I am currently homeschooling him for awhile, we decided to give this book a try. We've only done a few letters so far, but I love the format. We just made copies from our printer so we could go over different letters again or I can use them with my other kids in the future without having to purchase another book. I love the big letter at the top that gives the order you will trace over each section. For some of the letters where you go over the same part of the letter more than once, knowing the order is so important. It gives a big one with the order of steps at the top, then ones to trace, and then a few lines to try to make them on their own. Nothing too fancy, but I feel like the big letter at the top, and the way that is designed really makes it helpful. We also got the sequel book that connects the letters into words for once he gets more confident in the individual letters.

Good book but it doesn’t have the proper uppercase Q. It’s supposed to look like a 2. Teach it properly.

They no longer teach cursive in my grandson's school. I think this is a shame so bought this book for him. He loves it.

We homeschool and are using this book to learn cursive with my 3rd grade son. He loves the step by step dot to dot directions for each letter and is doing great learning 'fancy writing'. Having the dot to dot example was the main feature that sold me on this product so there was a very simple and direct way that showed kids how to form the letters correctly. I would definitely recommend this book!

Ship rock, an extravagance of volcanic rock in the New Mexico desert, rises abruptly from the valley floor and soars far enough that a certain variety of humans have a compulsion to scale its cliffs. In this particular adventure, the problem encountered by the various law enforcement /mystery solvers is a skeleton on the rock, obviously in place a long while. As a member of a series, this book has an unfair advantage: the characters haver been around the block a time or two, and they know each other. They behave in their usual fashion. The individuals imported just for this book behave as they should, to stay within the plot, but the plot has enough twists to keep you guessing as to, not so much "who done it", as " what will our heroes do about what was done" because justice is not always a thing within the law, and the law doesn't always create justice.

I would really love to give this five stars because I love the Navajo Mysteries books by Tony Hillerman. This is my second time reading the book and I had forgotten how slow the action took place. Hillerman' s knowledge of the land encompassing the Navajo reservation, the Navajo people, their customs and the other people who live on the land is enthralling. The reader becomes a part of the culture and can smell the air, the trees and the other plants; can feel the heat and see in the eye of the mind the landscape.I have read all but a couple of the Navajo Mysteries and have read several at least twice. I regret there won't be more to enjoy. Hillerman draws his characters so completely that you know Joe Leaphorn, Jim Chew and Bernadette Manuelito when you pick up a book and begin reading.

Just like the previous entry in Tony Hillerman's "Leaphorn & Chee" series ("Sacred Clowns"), I'm really rating "The Fallen Man" at 3-1/2 stars instead of the Very Good 4 stars out of 5 showing here. For the positives, once again Hillerman's got Leaphorn and Chee each pulling on their own threads until they finally meet up in the middle, wonderful settings, nice descriptions, bad guys getting what's coming to them, etc.. For the negatives, again, just like the previous book, Hillerman has given us just too much of Jim Chee's personal pain. At least in this book, it appears that Chee has finally received enough blows to the head with blunt instruments to actually notice that his love life is not going as he expects it to be going. If we're lucky, in the next book, Chee will figure out on which side of the fence he should actually be sowing his oats. But, I guess, just like in the last book, it makes for good philosophy.I'd also like to mention that this book seems to have a few minor inconsistencies in actions, personalities, and settings that bothered me. They're very minor: one example is in the first chapter where Hillerman's describing the sunset from Ship Rock. Essentially, he's got the Fall sun setting in the northwest when it should be setting in the southwest part of the sky.Hillerman's "Leaphorn & Chee" novels are:1. The Blessing Way2. Dance Hall of the Dead3. Listening Woman4. People of Darkness5. The Dark Wind6. The Ghostway (Jim Chee Novels)7. Skinwalkers8. A Thief of Time9. Talking God10. Coyote Waits11. Sacred Clowns: Novel, A12. The Fallen Man13. The First Eagle14. Hunting Badger15. The Wailing Wind16. The Sinister Pig17. Skeleton Man18. The Shape Shifter

I don't give good book reviews like some people, so I don't even attempt to. But I am addicted to this writer and his stories. As soon as I finish one book in the series, I buy and start on the next. I have learned so much about anthropology, ethnology, history, etc. I love good mysteries and detective stories, and these books never fail to satisfy. You really don't have to read them in order because Hillerman fills in the spots you might miss if you read out of order. The sexual content is implied rather than factual so the stories are tasteful, but you don't miss out on the human aspect of relationships. I haven't been disappointed with one of the books so far - I am on number 13 now.

I loved continuing to learn about Navajo culture, the desert Southwest, what it’s like to live and work on an Indian Reservation. Hillerman’s descriptions of the landscape, weather, and people are masterful in this book. I am re-reading the entire series from start to finish and recommend them all to every person who wants to learn more about what it means to be human, and to walk in beauty like the Navajos strive to do.

Beautifully written, very knowledgable about Navajo culture and history, a wonderful series of books. A series of detective stories, detective/ mystery stories set in the huge Navajo reservation, about two Navajo policemen. Read them in order.

I'd worn out all my paperback copies of Hillerman's books, but wanted to read them again (and again and....), so these are replacements His characters are unique personalities who subtly represent their different cultures (anglo, navajo, hopi, etc.) while solving cleverly plotted crimes. The locale of the stories is a character in itself - as anyone who's ever visited the American southwest and its indian country will instantly recognize. These books are not only really good detective stories, but subtle lessons in the value of the land, the people and their relationships, and the various religions that underlie the narratives and interactions of the stories. If you've never read one of the late Tony Hillerman's books, you're in for a treat.

Good story and mix of mysteries. The Navajo lifestyle and belief system are woven throughout, with likeable characters , and great scenic descriptions of places and spaces.

After taking an introductory tapestry weaving class last winter, I was looking for additional resources for inspiration and instruction. I have been an admirer of Maryanne Moodie's tapestry work for a while, and when I learned she was publishing this book last March, I immediately preordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival. I received the book today and was so disappointed to find it is not a comprehensive manual of Maryanne Moodie style tapestry weaving, but rather a how-to book of the kinds of crafts you see on Pinterest or that kids make at summer camp - like a floppy basket made from strips of blue jeans, a yarn-wrapped lamp shade, a "festival hair tapestry", a yarn-decorated bicycle basket, a tote bags made from a store-bought rug, and a gods-eye updated with fringe, to name a few. If you are looking for some projects to entertain an 8 year old on a rainy day, this book may work for you. If you are looking for inspiration and techniques for creating beautiful modern tapestries, I'd look elsewhere. I agree with another reviewer that "Beyond Craft: The Art Fabric," by Mildred Constantine and Jack Lenor Larsen is excellent for inspiration. I also recommend "DIY Woven Art" by Rachel Denbow for both inspiration and for detailed and easy to understand tutorials on various stitches and techniques - this book is basically everything I expected On the Loom to be.

I like Moodie's work. Unfortunately, the book falls short. I returned it because I did not find a single project that I consider attractive or useful.I agree with design lover; Rachel Denbow's book on DIY Weaving delivers exactly what I expected from Moodie's book.

I was so excited to receive this book. I preordered it and was counting down the days for when it would come in the mail. I even waited until I could devote my full and undivided attention to poring over the sumptuous pictures of creatively woven wall hangings. To say, I was underwhelmed is an understatement. I am a beginner weaver and I realize there is an importance of Maryanne fully explaining color theory and the various stitches of basic weaving. But, her tutorials and items she chose to highlight fell completely short for me. I follow her (and have for some time) on instagram and her website. She does incredibly modern things with weaving and has truly elevated this craft to a full art form. I was hoping that she would explain some of her techniques for her truly modern and avant-garde uses of fiber and the loom. While she did touch upon circular looms and looms using natural objects, she did not give any insight in how she played around with pattern and fiber to do some of her truly wonderful works. I understand that she may not want to give all her "secrets" away, but I just didn't think she went far enough in discussing how she lays out her patterns and work prior to weaving and how she incorporates three dimensional objects into her weavings. I know this is not a true secret because other weavers doing similar things have done this in their books. She does incredible work. Her weavings are fresh and dreamy and just altogether fantastic. I wish her book would have inspired me to attempt some of her more unusual patterns or weavings. But, it didn't. It's not a terrible book but like I said, it just fell short. Maybe I expected more from her because I know what she can do. And, I figured she would let us in on how she took this art form and truly made it her own so that we, in turn, could make it our own. I hope she does another book and expands more upon weaving, pattern, stitches, and color.

I was so excited to get this book but was very disappointed upon opening it. Maryanne Moodie has such a large following because of her beautiful work - I started weaving after seeing her work and have spent way too much time looking at her instagram for inspiration - but almost everything featured in the book has nothing to do with her own work.. I found that confusing and felt a bit cheated. My expectation was that I'd get a book about her work and I got.. a random assortment of weaving-related crafts? I can easily find the instructions portion of this book online, so I was hoping to hear from her about her thought process when weaving, the more complex weaving techniques, the way she creates negative space, where she gets yarn & how she organizes her space, creating your own voice and 'style' -- an insider view into her process, inspiration, dreams, etc. The book itself is beautifully made and some of the projects are interesting, but overall I was disappointed. Adore Maryane Moddie and her work - but don't love this book.

I have been a fan of Maryanne Moodie's wall hangings for two years now, and was so excited when she announced she was releasing a book! I preordered it immediately and was pumped then day it came home. Sadly, after examining every page and project, I decided to return it as it really had very little to do with making wall hangings, and even less to do with her stylistic approach. If her name and her forward weren't in the book, you'd never know it was written by her. The projects are hokey, and do seem like they are from a children's craft book. The photos in which she teaches you to weave are so small that you'd be better served going to free internet tutorials like the one at the website "Honestly WTF". The name " On the Loom" and cover photo are very misleading, so this book would benefit from a renaming and rebranding.

A more accurate title for this book would be "Crafting with Fibers". The loom-based instruction is minimal at best and doesn't cover even some of the bare bones of tapestry weaving such as hemstitching. There are some interesting fiber crafts (such as making a teepee with ribbon) presented but they are the most very basic in nature and most of the instructions are text-based. If you are looking for a book on modern tapestry weaving, complete with step-by-step photo-based instructions, I would recommend "DIY Woven Art" by Rachel Denbow.

My19 month old son is so into this book. He likes to sit on my lap while i read it. Having him introduced to these concepts at a very young age is important to me. Mr. Rogers is just the guy to do it. His writing is so respectful to children without downplaying anything. My LO really likes seeing how moms and dads take care of their little one's at the beginning of the book (feeding them, dressing them. . .changing diapers) and really likes the end of the book where the babies are smiling at their parents and the parents are proud. Then we talk about how mom's proud of him and he beams.Such a good book, makes me want to get others in the series.Mr. Rogers is a hero of mine and i look forward to sharing his work with my son as he grows.

It's a bit outdated regarding the photos, but it is written well. In the Mr. Rodgers tone, he explains how little boys and girls grow up and start taking care of themselves and the exploration of going potty. Technical terms such as urination and bowel movements are used. Examples of floor potty chairs and toilet seats are both used. He explains it may be strange at first but then it's not so strange. My 2-year-old enjoys the pictures of the children and often points when they are sitting on the potty and says pooh (our word). Seemed to help him grasp the idea that the potty chair was for him when he saw the other children using one. Saw a huge jump in his use of the potty chair when we started reading it to him.

This is a great book for beginning and intermediate potty trainers. I loved Mr. Rogers as a kid and as a parent I still do, thanks to his tactful economy with words in this book. He says just enough to give kids the facts about potty training but not too much to gross parents out or scare kids away from toilet learning. This book a simply written, informative, and encouraging. All children love to look at other children and my daughter responds to photographs so much better than illustration. This book shows real children sitting on the toilet or on little potties with their parents supporting them by their sides, and also alone. This is great to read just before beginning potty training to help your child learn why he or she must learn to use the toilet, and also while the child is on the potty (since its a little longer than many first potty books and might help your child stay sitting). This book illustrates the use of both cloth and disposable diapers and tells kids that changing diapers is one of the ways parents show love. I am so glad that is mentioned, because a lot of kids definitely take it for granted. Kids of both sexes and of various ethnicities are shown in both panties and training pants, using all sorts of different potties, and in different situations.A great book for parents and kids. A huge hit with my family.

The language and photos are outdated but it's a super calm/adult approach to using the potty. It's actually great for my analytical daughter who likes to listen and process (not your normal 2 yr old)I change some of the language in it so she can relate when I read it. Use "poop" instead of "BM" and whatnot, but it's got the feel of a mr Rogers episode, so if you're a Mr R fan, you'll like reading this to your kids.

This is the only potty book I bought for my son. I bought it when he was about 18 months, and we started reading it as a bedtime story. I let it be his choice when he wanted to read it.At 26 months, he decided that he was ready to use the toilet, and just started telling me when he wanted to go. There were a few accidents, but not many. Each time, we just talked about how he needed to tell me when he has to go. I didn't have to "train" him or nag him.Kids love learning and growing and doing things like grown-ups. We just need to get out of their way and let them do it in a positive, supportive environment.Yes, the photos are dated, but kids don't notice things like fashion and hairstyles. They love to see photos of real kids acting as role models.

I wanted a potty book for my child that had pictures of real kids (not animals or cartoons) using the potty and this seemed like the only one I could find! You can't go wrong with Mr. Rogers, the book might be a bit too wordy for my 2yr old, but she does "read" it herself at least daily. I like how she can see other children using the potty, my only issue (as others have mentioned) is that the material is pretty outdated, but you kind of know that before purchasing just based on the cover photo. This book would have been current when I was a kid! I'm not expecting this book to potty train my kid, but I am sure that it has helped associate waste elimination with sitting on the potty.I would have given 5 stars if it was more modernized - it's still WAY more modern than the "Once Upon a Potty" book, I mean that kid is sitting on a chamber pot...

I grew up watching and always liked Mr. Rogers so that's why I figured I'd try this book out for my potty training toddler. It does a good job of showing real pictures and explaining using the potty, but it is boring and uses technical terms like "urinate". It is pretty forgettable and is not one my toddler ever seeks out on her own for me to read to her. There are definitely better and more toddler friendly potty training books out there.

My kids love this book- great photos, soft, slow and easy to understand story line. Photos are older, like being at Grandmas house but still perfectly understandable. Would love to see a version of it with updated photos. This and Fisher Price's My Very Own Potty are the best potty training books with photos and no silly cartoons with stupid noises.

Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum Novels), by Janet Evanovich

From Publishers Weekly

In this tepid Stephanie Plum adventure from Evanovich (Finger Lickin' Fifteen, etc.), a personal case distracts the Trenton, N.J., bondswoman from tracking the usual group of eccentric skips--the kidnapping of her cousin, Vinnie, who's being held for ransom in the high six figures. As Stephanie, sidekick Lula, and office manager Connie soon realize, Vincent Plum Bail Bonds is seriously in the red due to Vinnie's gambling. Vinnie's also gotten caught up with local mobster Bobby Sunflower in a complicated scheme. Even though her sleazy cousin isn't her favorite person and chasing oddball felons isn't her ideal career, Stephanie knows family loyalty counts for something, plus she owes him for giving her a job all those years ago. So with Lula and Connie in tow--and romantic interests Morelli and Ranger lurking in the background-- Stephanie must save the day once again. Evanovich is at her best spinning the bizarre subplots involving Stephanie's bail jumpers, but the larger story simply recycles elements from previous installments. Stephanie Plum, half-Italian, half-Hungarian, a shrewd mixture of smarts and dumb luck, works for her cousin Vinny as a bail bondswoman in Trenton, New Jersey. Vinny, however, is in deep fecal matter, owing too much money to the very scary guys who have kidnapped him. Stephanie, office manager Connie, and Lula, plus-sized and focused (if not on the job at hand), manage to spring Vinny (more than once) and find a lot of money to pay what he owes. Along the way, they facilitate a cow stampede and an alligator escape; are assisted by a bunch of Hobbit con-goers; and find their office going up quite thoroughly in flames. Stephanie wrecks the usual car and ping-pongs between the hot and dangerous Ranger and the hot and domestic Morelli. Ranger says the “love” word to Stephanie, but it is Morelli at the end, offering her a pink, lacy thong. In the first few pages, Evanovich both catches readers up on the hilarious and cockeyed history of the preceding 15 books and gives fans a little more of everything they want, including the return of beloved stoner Mooner. Funny, scary, silly, and sweet. --GraceAnne A. DeCandido

in this installment of the Stephanie Plum series, she has inherited her Uncle Pip's lucky bottle and this may not be her good luck charm as she may soon be unemployed. Cousin Vinnie has run up a huge debt with his bookie, who in turn is heavily indebted to a mobster. When Vinnie disappears the ransom is the huge sum, with interest. To save her job, and the business, Stephanie, Lula, and Connie must raise the money while trying to track down where Vinnie is held to free him while they try to raise the huge sum of money. Vinnie's rich father in law is no help as Vinnie's wife threw him out just before he was kidnapped. The usual plot lines include demolished cars and Ranger saves. Still a five star story

I am reading/rereading this series & to this point, this is the best & most interesting book of all.Tho I am sure that each book could be read as a stand alone novel, why would anyone WANT to do thaaat?Knowing each character a little bit better - as each story passes along, the enjoyment magnifies.Even if one has to purposefully ignore the standard ploys, such as the heroine "requiring" 2 boyfriends who cannot be chosen between ... etc, this series is STILL an enjoyable series of stories, which have few equals. My rules are: Interests me, Avoids in-ur-face violence or sex, Makes me smile or laugh sometimes ... probably other stuff that will come to me later😊

Stephanie Plum is a bond enforcement agent, working for her cousin Vinnie. She is not the best bounty hunter but because of her tenacity and just plain stubbornness, she always seems to track her skips down and eventually apprehends them. Which is pretty good considering she typically does not have her gun with her, and even if she did it most likely wouldn't have bullets in it. She is constantly losing her cuffs, forgets to charge her stun gun every night and caries around extra hold hair spray in lieu of pepper spray. With this book, her skips included a man wanted for polygamy, a toilet paper bandit, and a drug dealer with a pet alligator name Mr. Jingles. Her biggest challenge is to rescue her cousin Vinnie from the mob with the help of Lula (who was at one time a prostitute) and Connie (office manager). If you like stories with 6 ft alligators, a stampede of cattle running through the streets of Trenton and the thought of hobbits crusading to the rescue, then I recommend this book it is very entertaining and has some hilarious moments with laughter.Based on the previous series with the Stephanie Plum character, the plot included Lula too much and not enough of Ranger the ex-military mentor and the homicide cop boyfriend Joe Morelli. It also could have included more of the crazy character grandma Muzar.

Stehanie's boss Vinnie is kidnapped by Bobby Sunflower who wants a million dollars to set him free. His wife does not care and his family does not want to pay to get Vinnie back. Stephanie, Connie and Lula do not have that kind of money, but they will do anything in their power to set their boss free and keep their jobs.I am always entertained by Stephanie Plum's books but this one did not feel as entertaining. I liked the plot, Vinnie is tossed around and the continuity seems fine, but I did not find myself laughing at the situations. I like that Connie is playing a bigger part in the book and that they act more as a team. But it was not as fun and I mostly read these because they make me laugh, hence the three stars.

Wow, that's a long summary! I understand that there are a lot of people who were disappointed with Sizzling Sixteen. You cannot approach the Stephanie Plum series expecting the rules of the "real world" to apply. That's why these books are the perfect summer reads: they are light-hearted, funny, sometimes silly, and totally implausible. Implausible, you say? Yes! In what dimension can you: Eat everything you want and not gain weight Blow up/wreck/irreversibly damage multiple cars Have an ongoing sexual-tension filled flirtation with two unbearably sexy men and never have either one of them give you an ultimatum Be saved from danger by grown adults dressed up as hobbits Never load your gun but manage to get away unharmed every time you're taken hostage (at least one time per book) Distract an alligator with fried chicken...can you see how I could keep going with this?If anyone knows a place where things like this actually happen, sign me up---I want to live there. Especially if Ranger will be there too...Just One Gripe:The plot is kind of weak, as usual. This is overshadowed by the fact that the series is so funny. The Best Thing About This Book:I read the Stephanie Plum series for the humor. They are laugh-out-loud hilarious! I bust out laughing at least five times per book and Sizzling Sixteen did not disappoint in that respect. Grandma Mazur, Lula, Mooner, the Hobbits, all of it was awesome!
