Loved this volume! It's always a treat when you read a music critic who can impress you even when you disagree with some of his claims. The fundamental argument--that Oasis became the biggest band in the world in the mid-90s because, in part, they represented a surge of populist hope in the wake of the Thatcher regime--is thoroughly and convincingly explored. Niven's analysis of Definitely Maybe's sonic textures is fascinating and well written.On a less-than-half-serious note, Niven clearly has something against guitar solos--kind of bags on Noel Gallagher's ride-out solos on "Live Forever" and "Slide Away," songs he seems to consider otherwise perfect. As a guitarist who played these songs as a teenager in my high school rock band, I always enjoyed the simple pentatonic solos on Definitely Maybe--so simple I learned them by ear--but I suppose it makes sense that Niven wouldn't care for such solos. This whole volume, after all, essentially makes the case that Oasis' debut was a brief flourish of what real socialist brother- and sisterhood might look like, and guitar solos so obviously bring to mind the look-at-me egoism of 80s metal bands, clear counterpoints for capitalist excess. I also think Niven dismisses the wild majority of Oasis' post-Definitely Maybe output a bit too cavalierly. But, as I say, when you respect a writer's mind and phrasing, a little disagreement is not only okay but welcome. I read this book very quickly and did so with a nostalgic and appreciative smile on my face.

Unlike some of the books on aging I have looked at which seem to exhort us to do this or that, this book is more an invitation -- to be with what is actually happening in our bodies, minds, and spirits; to reflect on meaning and leadings; to open up to the deeper and wider range of possibilities that beckon to us in the ripeness of our later years.

Beautifully written by a master of inquiry – Ripening Time cracks open our imagination and curiosity about the potential of what and who we can be if we “ripen our full human development”. Baby Boomers, about to test the limits of longevity, have always challenged the status quo – the way we have lived, loved and explored the meaning of our lives. A matter of taste. Not all that engaging for my preference. Others may feel otherwise.

I give this book 5 stars because it is an approach to aging that I find personally helpful. The writing is clear and the authoress really lets you into her life and her aging process in a way that is both poignant and light. It's a delightful read that offers a fresh perspective on aging and debunks the cultural spin on growing older.

Sherry Anderson has done a beautiful job of thinking about what it means to age consciously. This is a wonderful contribution to those are becoming elders, to those who will become elders in the future, and to all who love and care for them.

I heard Sherry Ruth Anderson on NPR and decided to order her book. I enjoyed the book in large part because I agree with her attitudes about aging. A must for all in my - 69 years - age group.

Excellent, very readable. I highly recommend this book as a helpful tool in dealing with aging.

Little known and long forgotten, but resurrected in a heart warming manner, this story of almost forgotten history was extremely interesting. As my wife grew up in Scottsville, TX, the story took on an added dimension. There many lessons in life that are constructed in this book, and do not be surprised if most can be applied to all of our lives. Unfortunately, prejudice is a human condition which can only be moderated and never eliminated. But we each must do what we can to assist in its marginalization.

I love history and cemeteries. This is the story of a long-abandoned slave cemetery in Texas. The family members had been locked out of it for many decades (unlawfully). The author met some of the descendants who then banded together to do the very big job of clearing the cemetery and rededicating it. I appreciated this book because I was part of a group who cleaned up a cemetery under similar circumstances; however, ours was not a slave cemetery. Regardless, every cemetery and the people buried in it are deserving of our respect.

An interesting read about the fortitude and strength of those who revered their lineage in the saving of this historical cemetery.

Good story of the slaves in the south and what happen when they died. I enjoyed this book. I love cemeterys. So this was right up my alley. Good lesson for all of us to make sure we clean up old cemetery, makes it easier for us when we are looking for information about our ancestry

I liked the way racism is overcome by the author and her friends.

The valiant attempts of a historian to restore and recognize an African American cemetery in east Texas are lost to encroaching big oil and mineral rights. The African American community is impoverished and survivors of years of oppression but cannot afford to fight to save the cemetery. The histories of oppression is well documented and brought to the surface. The writer makes a great case for the preservation and protection of all burial grounds and the historical value they hold.

Interesting history from a time not everyone wants to touch. I found myself wishing that it had gone a little deeper into the people involved and their histories.
