What an awesome book! It has strategies that are logical and really work. It's well written and easy to understand with 15 workout sessions with answers that cover all the sections of the test. So glad we bought this for our daughter's SSAT prep!

I can't say that this book helped increase scores but it did give my son strategies to help prepare him. I think using this book 4-6 months out would be ideal.

Great tips and suggestions to guide you through the exam process. The practice workbook was helpful to my son and better prepared him for the test

good book. Not too much info, but enough practice

Well written, well organized, fresh/relevant content, lots of exercises, strong emphasis on strategies (which is key!), age-appropriate tone/style, very accessible - I could go on and on!My daughter used both the Success course book and the 30 Days work out books for the upper level SSAT and in just 3-4 weeks she felt very well prepared for her second run at the test. This is an excellent system because it targets the material by test/level, so you know that you're studying content that relates to the test you will be taking. Other prep books are unmanageable as they try to be everything to all ISEE and SSAT test-takers. This focused approach builds confidence quickly with the right amount of topic review and test-taking strategy. My daughter started with the Success course book and then moved to the 30 Days book....she made 4x6 flash cards of all the strategies and also used Quizlet to study root and word lists. My only suggestion to the author is an appendix with a single consolidated word/root list. Good luck to all who this book set, it will help immensely!!!

I purchased this book for my 8th grader based on the glowing reviews on Amazon's website. My son studied this book in its entirety and took the upper level SSAT over the last weekend. When asked about the relevance of the material in this book, he shared with me that this does not even come close to the level of difficulty and scope of the material on the real exam. I must add that he is an Honors student with straight As in a very competitive school comprising high performing East Indian and Chinese student bodyI encourage other parents to do their homework before purchasing this book. There may be alternative options from reputed companies which the author has sought to categorize as hodge podge of material not suited for SSAT preparation

She wants to go to SIAC more than anything, but any artist knows how hard it is to create with so much self-doubt and outside anxiety. Luckily, meeting the cute drummer of an up-and-coming punk band might just be the outside perspective she needs to view her life from a new angle.Tom Leveen has become a favorite author of mine, and although this is one of his earlier works, still proved itself to be a smooth and engrossing read. Leveen did not shy away from serious topics, making for a serious yet fun read that was quick-paced and filled with interesting characters. Each character had their own share of personal demons to deal with, which went along well with the theme that fear and anxiety can keep anyone from improving their lives—not just artists. To be honest, though, the book started out a little slow for me. In the beginning chapters, Zero's voice felt too forced into the angsty teen state, like Leveen was trying too hard to imitate a "real" teen voice. This problem didn't last long for me though as Zero/Amanda became better fleshed-out with unique traits and characteristics. As a fellow artist (writer), I found a lot of Zero's struggle to be relatable. The self-doubt and anxiety caused by the idea of sharing your art—whether it's a painting, a story, music, or something else—can be crippling. So many creative people never end up sharing their work and are locked in a permanent state of stress just by the mere thought of trying. Zero reminds us that even if you fail, you won't know for sure until you try, and fear will only keep you locked in place forever. I'd recommend Zero to YA readers, especially young artists, writers, musicians, or anyone else who one day dreams of sharing their soul with others.

Zero by Tom Leveen is real. It covers the self-deprecating insecurities that come with being a teenage girl, the frightening excitement that comes with all the firsts of falling in love. Add to that a beautiful swirl of art and music, and you have one marvelous novel!Zero is an artist with some serious insecurities. She thinks she's a cow and her parents are too busy with their constant fighting to help subside those insecurities. She's afraid that her entire summer is going to be wrapped in boredom because she just lost her best friend and she didn't get accepted into her dream college. Mike is the gorgeous-eyed drummer who had a really bad run with his ex-girlfriend. He's more experienced than she is, but the fact that he was previously burned prevents him from really wanting to GO THERE, if ya know what I mean. Actually, if anything, it was the other way around. Zero pressured Mike to do things he wasn't ready for. I could tell from the get-go that, despite his rockerness, Mike is a good guy and that he is going to treat Zero well. He helped her reach for her goals and dreams. He helped her gain confidence and believe in herself. And, not to mention, I'm sort of obsessed with the drums and have a serious thing for drummer dudes.I loved their relationship. It began with extreme awkwardness, which made it so real and familiar and relatable. And somehow their feelings bloomed into something that manages to transcend that initial awkwardness. There's no instant, "OMG I LOVE THIS GUY SO MUCH AND WE ARE GOING TO GET MARRIED AND MAKE BABIEZZZZZZZ." Their relationship progressed naturally. There are rough spots and there are not-so-rough (soft?) spots. They're not the perfect couple with this unwavering bolt of lightning crackling between them, but they are perfect for each other and each encounter between the two of them made my tummy tumble in a good way. It did annoy me that Zero refused to listen to what Mike really wanted. She was a little self-absorbed in their relationship, not even when it was extremely obvious that something has him down.There were little things thrown in the pages that I wish would have surfaced more and caused more drama. Instead they just sort of lurked in the background, adding to the overall angst that Zero feels. I really wish that the situation with Jenn, her former best friend, would have come into the light more. It was a great sub-plot and it didn't get enough page time. Also, I feel the whole parent ordeal was elevated just a little more. It was there screwing up Zero's life and whatnot, but maybe just a little more? Is it horrible that I want her life to be just a tad bit more miserable?The end, though, left me satisfied. The character and plot growth is obvious. The way things turned out was happy, even though there were a lot of little loose threads hanging from the tied ends.Overall, I loved this book! It has an unflinching, authentic quality that really stayed with me. Some of the content will make younger audiences uncomfortable (except me, because I clearly have no comfort zone). But underneath it all is a novel about branching out and pursuing what seems to be impossible.

It's a good book. It allows you to feel as if you are a part of the picture instead of having a bunch of information told to you. It was easy to learn by being able to relate. I wish the pictures had more color. I don't think you're ever too old to like pictures in an academic book. But overall, I love the format of the book.

A fascinating overview of evolution, and of the evolution of human behavior and society in particular. The writing is accessible to everybody, and I highly recommend it to all people regardless of their scientific background. Well-written, with many helpful charts, etc. A real eye-opener!

I saw reference to this book in a catalog and tracked it down through Amazon. Found it absolutely delightful and informative. It covers all the Ford westerns, even those filmed in the silent era, where the musical compositions were prepared as sheet music to be played in-house inside the theatre where the films were being shown. I was especially interested in the martial music from the "Cavalry trilogy" films---Fort Apache, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, and Rio Grande---as well as Sergeant Rutledge and The Horse Soldiers (which drew only minor mention, as the author doesn't consider it a proper "western", but, rather, a civil war movie). The insights into the uses of hymns, folk songs, and military performances were quite insightful and the book is chock full of great background data on such material. I always loved the jaunty, bouncy, ,stirring music of "She Wore A Yellow Ribbon", and the author gives a captivating summary of everything that went into creating the music for that film, and on each of the songs such as the title piece, and on the accompanying songs like "Garry Owen", "Dixie", and "The Girl I Left Behind Me". This book was no disappointment in the least and I recommend it unreservedly. It is truly a keeper. It was delivered promptly and "as advertised" and is a volume that will stand on my bookshelf for a long time to come.

This work is dense and scholarly, and reveals a great deal of information about Ford's usage of music in his many films. It is very enlightening regarding the role of music in pre- and post-production. The author obviously spent a great deal of time poring over archival material and interviewing the few still surviving who participated in the creation of Ford's many classic works. I would only improve this work by adding more photos, perhaps captioned to describe the music associated with the scene depicted.

K. Kalinak was my college film teacher a few years back at RI College. Her classes were challenging and thoughtprovoking. She always provided her students with excellent feedback and ideas on ways to improve. Her book is fantastic. I can't say enough great things about her book. If you are a RIC student make sure to pick up a copy and support your faculty. She worked so hard on this wonderful book. If your into Ford films you will get a really deep and intricate account of how music was used to create diffrent scenarios. Fantastic.

Academically oriented book that examines the use of music in director John Ford's western films. The soundtracks of Ford's films have always been of interest to me for their use of standards from American history - songs like Bonnie Blue Flag, My Darling Clementine, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon, and so many more. These were songs I grew up and hearing them in the Ford films brings back a lot of nostalgia. The book takes each of Ford's westerns, including the silents, and examines the use of music in them. I had no idea that Ford himself, personally selected the music used in the film. It was also interesting to hear how lyrics were sanitized for movie audiences from the original lyrics. The author covered the origins of the songs and in many cases, the songs themselves were written after the time period of the film. I found the book interesting but only wish it were accompanied by a cd that would have perhaps given us the John Ford version of the song vs. the original version. I know this would have increased the cost of the book but it would have been easier to hear what the author was speaking about. Overall, an interesting look at the music in the films of John Ford but more scholarly than I anticipated.

Adorable. This book is like a combination of Grandma wisdom of "use it up, wear it out, make it do or do without," and Project Runway (which is a combination that works better than it sounds). Who remembers The Elephant Show with Sharon, Lois and Bram? They performed a song this book reminded me of, where a coat became a jacket became a vest became a hat became a tie became a pocket became a button...you get the drift. Anyway, the sweet story and impossibly cute illustrations combine to make this something I hope my granddaughter will love, and a message I hope she'll embrace.

We have been reading this over and over again because the story is just so cute. The illustrations are nice. The tempo is very upbeat and catchy, and sounds very good when read aloud. The story itself is nice because not only does it talk about fashion, it addresses the idea of repurposing things. I also appreciate that although the main character is POC, the story isn’t about her race or racial struggle. The story also has repeated lines that are perfect for kids who like to read along with parents. This book makes for a great gift for children 3-6. If they like Fancy Nancy or anything fahshion or craft related, they will love this.

This is the cutest story. I got this for my 4-year old niece and she can’t get enough. She has read it with her mom several times since receiving it. She’s a little fashionista of color, and she loved seeing a brown girl like her on every page. Her mom told me she excitedly said, “mommy, she looks just like me!” That said, this is a universal story that will appeal to a range of ages.

This book is so sweet for so many reasons - first and foremost, the illustrations are absolutely beautiful. My 7 year old traces the whimsical pictures with her fingers as we read. The story is equally sweet, showing a girl can repurpose and reuse one of her favorite things, her pretty pink dress, and her mother teaches her how to get crafty and think creatively. My girls ask for this book every night, definitely one of our absolute favorites.

I loved this book. Sweet story, beautiful illustrations! My little sister (10) couldn't stop looking at it. I really appreciated the opportunity to give my sister a book about a girl who looks like her without the theme of the book having anything to do with race. Really refreshing and cute!

We read this book every night - my daughter loves it! Very cute. It's about a little girl who upcycles a favorite dress of hers. My daughter is 3 and when I say she is obsessed with this book - I mean it!

Got this for our nursery... but my 3 year old daughter loves dresses. This story really spoke to her and she loved all the colorful, fun pictures. It gave us both a lot to think about when it comes to recycling our clothing. Definitely recommend for lots of ages.

This has become my five year old daughter's favorite book. She quotes from it often ("making molehills out of mountains", etc.) and it's honestly become a source of inspiration to her in terms of creativity and problem solving. I really can't recommend it enough. I even find myself tearing up at the end when I read it aloud because the underlying theme is about a child growing up and ever-changing.
