With solid footnotes even the most casual follower of Tolkien's world will glean what these drawings and designs are all about. John Howe is such a masterful artist and illustrator that everything from sketches to full painting reveal his passion to create images to haunt, invite and thrill readers into the worlds hewn to such clarity of purpose that it's hard to resist falling into them from time to time.This is worthy of ANYONE'S bookshelf, from readers of the fantastic, artistic reference and certainly for Tolkien readers of all types. some might quibble with the small samples of finished paintings but the drawings more than make up for it, like life studies of places he managed to visit while we can only read about them.

John Howe's work depicting J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth is instantly recognizable, not only because he worked beside Peter Jackson in bringing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to film, but also for the beauty and drama of his art. A Middle-earth Traveler is described as a "walking tour" of Tolkien's world, and indeed it does resemble the sketchbook of an artistic wanderer who delights in capturing quick images of the landscapes and people he observes. Some of the sketches later evolve into finished paintings, but many remain in their original rough but very beautiful states.The book is divided into many chapters primarily dealing with landscapes and peoples from the Third Age of Middle-earth, with occasional glances back at earlier days in Valinor, Beleriand, and Numenor. I enjoyed Howe's landscapes, which are usually rendered in muted tones evocative of morning mists. I also liked his detailed architectural drawings, from hobbit holes to elven flets to massive stone fortifications in Gondor and Mordor. His depictions of hobbits, men, dwarves, elves, and orcs are admirable as well. While it is true that no one artist can completely satisfy every reader of works as complex and beautiful as those of J.R.R. Tolkien, John Howe along with Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, and a very few others at work today come closest to creating an artistic vision which matches the literary vision of Tolkien himself.

If you're a fan of middle earth art, this is worth adding to your collection. John writes like an academic and takes the reader to all sorts of places they might not be familiar with if their only experience is with the movies that he worked on. He is very talented with his pencils. My only complaint might be that some of the paintings (i.e. not drawings) are quite dark and difficult to see in anything less than a very well lit room - I'd have been happy with John leaving the paintings out & sticking entirely to drawings. Still, that doesn't stop this from being one of the finest art books I own & an excellent companion to Alan Lee's excellent LOTR Sketchbook.

I knew this book should be great but it's AMAZING!! I have already sketchbook by Alan Lee, which is great, but this one I like even more. It contains not only in pencil sketches but paintings also. Lot's of inspiration for an artist or a fan of fantasy.

I love John Howe's work but this book has two serious problems. First, it's riddled with typos and misspellings which I could look past but the second, poor print quality, I can't. The color images are so dark they are almost as clear as viewing the Mona Lisa placed at the bottom of a vat of molasses while wearing welding goggles. The pencil drawings that make up most of the art are the opposite. They are very light and almost uniform in their grey color this losing a lot of shadow and contrast. This makes the detail difficult to discern. Maybe I got a bad run? Haven't had a chance to reference another copy so don't know.

This is a wonderful book. Very similar in format and size of the Alan Lee's Lord of the Rings Sketchbook.The illustrations and sketches are wonderful as you would expect from any drawing made by John Howe.The only bad thing about this book is that I wish this book cuold be bigger, so it could have bigger drawings to be able to see all the details of John Howe's great artwork. Althoug the majority of illustrations are pencil drawings, the print of some colored ones are too dark and too small. Anyway, I would recomend this book to any John Howe admirer or Lord of the rings fan.

I have been a fan of all things Middle-earth since I was 13 years old, and feel John Howe's art does the best at capturing the look and feel of that magical place and/or its people with the exception of J.R.R. Tolkien himself. A Middle-earth Traveler and Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth are must have books.

I don't know anything about Middle Earth but my daughter now wants to buy this book for herself since this one is a gift for another person. She was surprised at the detail and what is included. Great find!

I am currently working through this with a high school small group. I have found that I am mostly reviewing each chapter and then discussing the main point and scripture and then creating many of my own discussion questions. The book does have questions for the girls to discuss with an accountability partner. However I find they engage much more when we have discussions verse me talking for 45 minutes. So I do wish the book offered more discussions questions. Otherwise it's good and applicable for them!

I work in student ministry, and I used this book as a Bible study for our girls (7-12th grade). The book is relevant and very insightful, and has brought up many important conversations. I highly recommend it!

I found this book "by chance" & bought a copy, thinking it might be useful for my junior high girls. I've been using it for my Bible studies with 6th and 8th graders. This book has been excellent! I do believe it needs to be in every youth pastor's arsenal. It is so well organized, well written, so honest, so thorough, so Biblical. 6th grade is the youngest age this book is useful for, and we have skipped a couple sections that are not applicable for that age yet. But this book is definitely useful for high school and college age girls. Everyone I have recommended it to, has loved it as much as I do. Women into their 50s have borrowed my copy, have read it for themselves & learned from it. It is simply a fantastic tool!

I grew up / raised in the Protestant faith, and about a year ago, I discovered Buddhism and started reading all the books I could find and joined a couple of forums about Buddhism and non-duality. This particular book (OPWC) has become my bible...It tells the story of the Buddha in an enchanting and engaging way, by Master Hanh. Plus, it tells you pretty much all you need to know - the basics of Buddhism and gives clear understanding of how it works.

The best of the best. Broad scope, easy to read and understand, being without the significant cultural language obstacles of the more traditional texts. A wonderful opportunity to journey with the Buddha across the entire span of his life. A relaxing and inpiring read that is a delight to savour from one story to the next. I have the hard copy and decided to buy the kindle version as well. It is that good. If you would like a down to earth story of the life and teachings of the Buddha in plain english and without the mystical embellishments, this is the one. Enjoy!

First,this book is long,no i mean really long,81 chapters.That said,it's a wonderful read tracing the life of Buddha..Is it all true?well,probably not.Is the Bible or Koran all true?..probably not,however "Old Path" is beautifully written weaving Buddha's life with his teachings and is a wonderful explanation of the Buddhist faith👍

This book is written with great love and understanding of the Buddha with compassion for the reader. It presents a beginning point for understanding Buddha's path to enlightenment and his teaching mission in life. The book represents a much better account than other books on the subject of the teachings and how to approach the fundamental understanding of the message being conveyed. Both my wife and I found this book an excellent source to actually document the step by step progression of the Buddha during his entire life. The book also provides an understanding of why and how the base of the disciples grew so quickly. The book provides perspective and is offered in plain and understandable terms. It should be read in sips and not gulps. Time should be spent in contemplation, because the depth of expression requires personal reflection. Unlike Karen Armstrong's history of the Buddha, this book in a primer for the understanding of what enlightenment means to the Buddhist. Once you "get it" you will have a beginning point to explore the more complex depths that the book presents. Red Pine's books on the diamond sutra and heart sutra provide significantly more depth for delving into the actual mental process of establishing meaning beyond the definition.With that said, this is the most complete account of the life and teachings of the Buddha I have read. It is written from a perspective of love and compassion. It does not glorify the Buddha but simply states the things that were and are the teachings and life of Buddha. The message is for you to begin your own reflections and arrive at a better personal understanding of what is real and what is not real. The book helped firm up my perspective on the Buddha's teaching. The book represented an excellent beginning point to pull together my understanding of the Buddha before becoming confused by the complexities of the detail Sutra's and sermons. One thing that is derived, practice is a constant even for the Buddha over many lifetimes.

A mesmerizing read filled with grace and well-being. Not only does one learn about the life of Siddhartha, the Buddha, one also experiences a great sense of peace as the story unfolds. Enjoy!

Katherine Applegate's Crenshaw is a hard book to classify. Technically it's a YA fantasy novel, but that description would cause readers to expect something light and fanciful. And that is far from the case with Crenshaw. True, it's about a boy named Jackson and his imaginary friend, a man-sized talking cat named Crenshaw. But he's a boy having to face some adult problems that may be beyond an imaginary friend's ability to help with.Jackson is a nine-year-old boy who lives with his mom and dad and his younger sister Robin. In an apartment. That they're about to be evicted from. Which means that they'll be having to live out of their run-down family car. Again. Because the family has on-going financial problems. Which in turn are partly because his dad is suffering from multiple sclerosis which is steadily diminishing his ability to work. It's a lot for a nine-year-old to have on his shoulders, even with the help of an imaginary friend.Applegate does an excellent job showing how these problems are playing out through Jackson's eyes, and you really feel for him as he relates what's happening as you can see in this particularly moving section:"After I got ready for bed, I lay on my mattress and thought things over.-- I thought about the stuff I'd put in my keepsakes bag. Some photos. A spelling bee trophy. A bunch of nature books. My teddy bear. A clay statue of Crenshaw that I'd made when I was in second grade. My worn-out copy of A Hole Is To Dig.-- I thought about Crenshaw and the surfboard.-- I thought about the purple jelly beans.-- Mostly though, I thought about the signs I'd been noticing.-- I am very observant, which is a useful thing for a scientist to be. Here's what I'd been observing:-- Big piles of bills.-- Parents whispering.-- Parents arguing.-- Stuff getting sold, like the silver teapot my grandma gave my mom and our laptop computer.-- The power going off for two days because we hadn't paid the bill.-- Not much food except peanut butter and mac and cheese and Cup O Noodles.-- My mom digging under the couch cushions for quarters.-- My dad digging under the couch cushions for dimes.-- My mom borrowing toilet paper rolls from work.-- The landlord coming over and saying "I'm sorry" and shaking his head a lot.-- It didn't make sense. My mom had three part-time jobs. My dad had two part-time jobs. You'd think that would add up to two whole actual jobs, but it didn't seem to.-- ...-- I figured my parents had a plan for making everything okay, because parents always have a plan. But when I asked them what it was, they said stuff like maybe they could plant a money tree in the backyard,. Or maybe they could start their rock back up again and win a Grammy Award.-- I didn't want to leave our apartment, but I could feel it coming, even if nobody said anything. I knew how things worked. I'd been through this before.-- It was too bad, because I really liked where we lived, even though we'd only been there a couple of years. Swanlake Village was the name of our neighborhood. It didn't have any real swans. But all the mailboxes had swans on them, and the community pool had a swan painted on the bottom.-- ...-- Swanlake Village wasn't a fancy place at all, just a regular old neighborhood. But it was friendly. It was the kind of place where you could smell hot dogs and burgers grilling every weekend. Where kids rode their scooters on the sidewalk and sold lousy lemonade for a quarter a cup. It was a place where you had friends you could count on, like Marisol.-- You wouldn't have thought it was a place where people were worried or hungry or sad.-- Our school librarian likes to say you can't judge a book by its cover. Maybe it's the same way with neighborhoods. Maybe you can't judge a place by its swans."Crenshaw does draw on other sources for some of its inspiration, particularly when it comes to imaginary friends. One is Mary Chase's classic 1944 stageplay Harvey, where the main character's best friend is a six-foot white rabbit no one else can see or hear. Another is the 2007 film Ratatouille where the rat Remy frequently has conversations with the spirit of Auguste Gusteau, the human chef he idolizes. And yet another is the "Hide and Seek" episode of the animated TV show Teen Titans where one of the characters has an imaginary friend, an invisible giant stuffed bear named Bobby. And in a special turn, Crenshaw turns to Ray Bradbury's "I Sing The Body Electric" for what imaginary friends do when they're not around the humans who imagined them. Applegate also draws on more scholarly sources for the reasons kids have imaginary friends, but it's clear that she is on the side of those who believe that just because someone is imagined, it doesn't mean they aren't real. AndHighly recommended with the caution that this deals with some serious subjects that some readers - young or adult - may not want to think about. But probably should.

This book does a phenomenal job of being engaging and fun despite material that could so-easily delve into dark and disturbing. The author walks that precise line of creating empathy without creating too much distress for young readers. I have no qualms letting my 10-year-old or even 8-year-old read this one. It *does* talk about homelessness and its side effects for a young child, but somehow the imaginary friend (who's introduced in the first line as a surfboarding cat who's holding an umbrella) makes things lighthearted and safe, even while you recognize that he's a sign of emotional distress.FOR PARENTS - CONTAINS SPOILERSIf your child is sensitive (like mine are), it may help to know that the imaginary friend is silly enough to break up the tension on a regular basis. Many of the most-difficult moments of the book happen in the past (from the previous time this boy had to live in the van with his family and their puppy for 14 weeks), so you know they eventually made it out. And although he mentions having seen his dad cry (the only time he had seen such a thing), most of the darker moments focus on things like the van being smelly, or how he didn't like his younger sister kicking him in her sleep (so he decorated a cardboard panel to put in between them). There's a lot of generosity/kindness from strangers, which helps a lot even though they *were* still living in a van, which keeps you empathizing with them but not spiraling into despair. There are also a couple of places where he says "I know other people have it much, much worse, but I still hate this," which again triggers empathy and understanding, without minimizing what anyone has to go through... making you aware of those darker stories, but not taking you into them. Finally, fortunately, at the end of this novel, the family finds a temporary place to stay (an old, run-down, one-room apartment) so again it's clearly not sunshine and roses, but hopeful. The author truly does a masterful job of introducing this difficult topic in a way that creates empathy while being enjoyable and (for most kids) non-traumatizing.

I bought this book and "The One and Only Ivan" (both by Katherine Applegate) for my grandson's upcoming 11th birthday. If you have read the other reviews, then you know this is about a large cat named Crenshaw, who is an imaginary friend to a 10 year old boy who is often hungry and facing the real possibility that he and his family may again be homeless and living in their SUV. It is a great story! I know the subject matter may seem a little sad for children, but really the story is uplifting in it's own way. I always read a story before I give it to my grandkids to read. I WANT to know what they are going to be reading and if it's appropriate for them to be reading it! This was a very enjoyable read and I highly recommend it for 10-100 year old readers.

I've never read a book that addresses both homelessness and hunger from a child's viewpoint. This author has done so brilliantly, and throws a child's imaginary friend into the story to help deal with the stresses placed upon this child/family. I loved the way the author had the imaginary friend show the child that telling the truth is best- even if the parents don't want to hear it. I would recommend this book to every student aged 9-12. We need to share with our students how they might make a difference in other peoples lives.

What an awesome book! It has strategies that are logical and really work. It's well written and easy to understand with 15 workout sessions with answers that cover all the sections of the test. So glad we bought this for our daughter's SSAT prep!

I can't say that this book helped increase scores but it did give my son strategies to help prepare him. I think using this book 4-6 months out would be ideal.

Great tips and suggestions to guide you through the exam process. The practice workbook was helpful to my son and better prepared him for the test

good book. Not too much info, but enough practice

Well written, well organized, fresh/relevant content, lots of exercises, strong emphasis on strategies (which is key!), age-appropriate tone/style, very accessible - I could go on and on!My daughter used both the Success course book and the 30 Days work out books for the upper level SSAT and in just 3-4 weeks she felt very well prepared for her second run at the test. This is an excellent system because it targets the material by test/level, so you know that you're studying content that relates to the test you will be taking. Other prep books are unmanageable as they try to be everything to all ISEE and SSAT test-takers. This focused approach builds confidence quickly with the right amount of topic review and test-taking strategy. My daughter started with the Success course book and then moved to the 30 Days book....she made 4x6 flash cards of all the strategies and also used Quizlet to study root and word lists. My only suggestion to the author is an appendix with a single consolidated word/root list. Good luck to all who this book set, it will help immensely!!!

I purchased this book for my 8th grader based on the glowing reviews on Amazon's website. My son studied this book in its entirety and took the upper level SSAT over the last weekend. When asked about the relevance of the material in this book, he shared with me that this does not even come close to the level of difficulty and scope of the material on the real exam. I must add that he is an Honors student with straight As in a very competitive school comprising high performing East Indian and Chinese student bodyI encourage other parents to do their homework before purchasing this book. There may be alternative options from reputed companies which the author has sought to categorize as hodge podge of material not suited for SSAT preparation

This book is just what the world of tutoring and test prep needs! It is apparent that Abbott is experienced with the process; she has provided a fabulous new way for tutors and students to approach a daunting task. Instructions are easy to follow, lessons are perfect for tutors to use at their own pace. Those used to working with other editions will be pleased by Abbott's methods and expertise.
