About the Author
Leonard Pitts, Jr., is the author of the novels Grant Park, Freeman, and Before I Forget, as well as two works of nonfiction. He is a nationally syndicated columnist for the Miami Herald and winner of the 2004 Pulitzer Prize for commentary, in addition to many other awards. Born and raised in Southern California, Pitts lives in Maryland outside Washington, DC.

I almost NEVER write a review. But because I’ve read other works by this thoughtful author, I waited patiently for this one to be released, and read it with enthusiasm. It might be his best yet. Let me begin by saying I’m a “softy,†and often don’t like when books or movies get too gritty. Yet, I found that he painted pictures that I thought were necessary for us to see how deeply ugly and evil we can be to each out as “human beings.†I would chase my family members, telling them about this book, the characters, reading scenes from the book. I loved the “thickness†of the characters, none of whom were paper-thin. There was one point in the book where I thought I might need to abandon it; I was so fearful that Thelma would make a decision against hope. Yet the author BRILLIANTLY kept me reading, and I was not disappointed. The book was realistic, yet hopeful, and I loved the modern-day message about race that was woven throughout the text. I could go on and on.....my only challenge was the use of the word “n——“ was used so pervasively that I couldn’t listen to the book anymore. I just committed to reading it to completion. My only request is that whoever directed/produced the movie “Mudbound†needs to make this book their next project. This would make an AMAZING MOVIE!†Just prepare yourself...it would be Rated R. This is not one for the kiddies, but it’s definitely a book worth reading. You will fall in love with some of these characters, as imperfect as they might be. I could go on....Well done, Leonard Pitts, Jr.!

It is fitting that it is a story about race, as it would seem the brains and souls of men and women, especially in America, need to continue to evolve. But this book is more, much more, than a dry treatise on that subject. It is a love story, a human story, a story of war and peace, it is a story about the love, pain, the joys and sorrows that pass between a parent and child, grandparent and grandchild, sister and brother. It is the story of what is learned and lost between forces of good and evil. It is eloquent, heartbreaking and beautiful. It is a new classic. Read it, America; read it, world. And learn some more about that most tremendous gift of all that the Creator gave us: the ability to see things through another's eyes, to care deeply about someone other than one's self, in short, to love.
Since first reading Leonard Pitts, Jr.’s columns in the Miami Herald almost 18 years ago, I have found that if Pitts has something to say, I want to read it. . . in fact, I need to read it. He can put complex, often difficult, ideas into beautiful words that show the reader his point of view, educating and helping the reader gain empathy and understanding.I ordered Pitt’s latest book, #TheLastThingYouSurrender, as soon as it was released – and it was everything I expected and more. It is a deeply researched work of historical fiction, with a compelling story that is hard to put down. I tried to keep from racing through the book, as I didn’t want to say goodbye to the characters who became friends, and who showed me the world through their eyes – which is why we read!Yes, there are parts that are very difficult to read, but part of power of this book is to show us, to remind us of the brutality of parts of our history that get glossed over as some of us extol the “good old days.â€I highly recommend this book, and hope Mr. Pitts will write a sequel to show us how they carry their inspiration and motivation into battles to come.
Loved the story and characters. I've read several works of historical fiction, for WWII and the Revolutionary War, and this was every bit as compelling a read. But so much more due to the racial backdrop for most of the characters and story. I'm old enough to have witnessed some of this atrocious behavior as a child in early 70s Dallas. But seeing the depth of and viciousness of it on display here is simply overwhelming. And to see some now think it's still okay to treat others so poorly, I just don't have the words or understand it at all. I'll never see things as you do, but reading & thinking through your words certainly helps my perspective. Thank you! Keep on writing.
A story that needed to be told for far too long. Mr. Pitts has told it exceedingly well. He vividly paints a world to which we can not - must not - return, a world of fear and hatred. We must be better.
Well written and insightful. Mr. Pitts is one of the best current commentators on America, past, present, and future. This branch into a novel on WWII carries his abilities into this format.

This is a stunning story of race and oppression, and ultimately survival, seen through the eyes of everyday people. I didn’t want the book to end.
