It was towards the end of the book for me to finally understand why Mr. Halberstam titled his work 'The Coldest Winter' instead of Winters being plural. The author focused the majority his book on the beginning of the war (June 25, 1950) through to a decisive battle at Chipyongni (February 13-15, 1951). The Chinese came to the rescue of the North Koreans on October 26, 1950. That winter saw temperatures dropping as low as minus-forty degrees without considering the windchill factor. Mr. Halberstam does an excellent job of clarifying for me why we got involved in the whole mess to begin with. The war had nothing to do with strategic value. At its core, the Korean War was simply about multiple egos needing to satisfy their superiority over others.The book explains the objectives and motivations of Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong, North Korea's Kim Il-sung, South Korea's Syngman Rhee, China's former leader Chiang Kai-shek, the Truman Administration, General Douglas MacArthur, General Matthew Ridgway, and other notables. What 'The Coldest Winter' does so well is place the Korean War in the broader context of the region's history and how cultural misunderstandings and prejudices caused the conflict. Man, it continues to depress me how cavalier some leaders can be with human lives, especially their own people. The author attempts to analyze the mindsets of such monsters as Stalin and Mao as well as some U.S. officers and political leaders. Especially in the United States, presidents are sometimes in control and, at other times, they are pulled along by political forces beyond their command. General MacArthur and his toady General Ned Almond are placed in an especially negative light in the book. Mr. Halberstam also shows how all military engagements involve varying levels of political infighting by different officers. The U.S. military has chains of command, but subtle forms of insubordination are rampant. The author's depictions of certain battles are edge-of-your-seat stuff. The book includes twenty-five helpful black-and-white maps but no photos. I also found the glossary of military terms at the beginning of the book to be quite helpful.The book's epilogue gives a remarkable assessment of the Korean War's continuing ripple effects, even today. 'The Coldest Winter' is the best kind of history book. It varies from giving a broader perspective of political machinations at play as well as detailed accounts of combat. The complexity and moral ambiguity of war are front and center. There are stories of heroism, cowardice, bravery, and farce. However, despite the author's descriptions of General MacArthur's power and hubris, I am still at a loss how such a megalomaniac was able remain a power onto himself and could so easily be insubordinate to our country's Commander in Chief, especially in some very public displays. The late William Manchester's highly praised 'American Caesar' is going to be on my future reading list to hopefully give me a clearer picture of the narcissist. 'The Coldest Winter' has not one dull moment in its nearly 670 pages.

This is an excellent history of the Korean War. This is an especially good read if you are interested in the causes of the war, regional and global implications, strategic and operational military decision making, and the political impacts back in the U.S. Although the author delves into some of the battles and gives the tactical perspective of Division and Regimental commanders/soldiers, most of the emphasis is on the key personalities involved at the national and strategic level and the impacts of their decisions. MacArthur, rightly so, comes out looking very bad. This is an excellent companion book to the classic T.R. Fehrenbach book, This Kind of War, which describes in gritty detail the hardships that the common Soldiers endured. I recommend both books to get an idea of how the rugged terrain, harsh climate, and historical geopolitical situation would make a war on the Korean peninsula very difficult and costly.

If you're unfamiliar with the Korean War, you will find this an easy book to read. However, it's not a study of the war in terms of campaigns or actions taken by the belligerents, so you aren't going to get a blow-by-blow picture of how the war progressed. Rather, this is mostly a study in background and some of the primary personalities involved, with coverage of just a very few particular events tossed in. In particular, MacArthur takes a real beating in this book, which I think is utterly deserved, but there are many other books that do likewise. Some other people also get the spotlight, particularly national leaders, military commanders and American soldiers on the ground. It really is an easy read and there's plenty of information on history and policies that led to and shaped the war. On that level, it works very well, and I enjoyed the book. But if you're wanting a treatment of the military events in chronological order or by major battles, then this isn't really what you are looking for. The vast majority of the book covers the period from the start of the war (and its genesis) to the time Mac is fired, which leaves little coverage of the final two-plus years of the war. And it's from that those months that the book derives its name, a period of time in which my dad served in Korea and knows exactly what "coldest winter" means.

I enjoyed book 1 of this series (liked the hero, but the heroine was a bit too brash for me), so I skipped book 2 as that h seemed to be cut from the same cloth, but this heroine in book 3 was just what I wanted to read. Kira's the shy, quiet type who thinks she's boring. She's also a virgin. She's not brash or ballsy, but neither is she a timid mouse. There's more to her, some pain, some insecurity, and a whole bunch of longing. I really felt for her and her reasons for pushing the hero away. She tries so hard to resist him, but he is such a charmer. I loved this hero. One of the sweetest I've read, alien hero or otherwise.I always love the heroes who look not so human, and Aehako is about seven feet tall, light blue in color, with horns and a tail. His people on this ice planet are hunter-gatherers, and he looks barbarian with his loin cloth and all the muscles, but he's charming, flirty, and kind. He's so gentle with Kira, one of the humans stranded on his planet. He calls her Sad Eyes, because he can see the pain and loneliness in her. She's the one for him, no one else, human or his own kind, will do, only Kira, and he persists until he has her convinced that she is all he needs. It was really sweet. His courting gift to her was too funny!The sex is erotic with good juicy details, the romance is sweet and caring, and all of it was fun to read. It's fun to see these humans fitting into this alien tribe. Hope to see more of that, and of the children, too! I hope the author is sure to include that in future books. I also like the dual first-person POV. This 3rd book was light, sweet, fun sexiness with an h/H who deserve each other and are going to be together no matter what. It's a sweet, happy romance.

Ruby Dixon’s Ice Planet Barbarians’ BARBARIAN LOVER the third book in what is probably my favorite science fiction romance series and that is mainly due to the face that everyone so far is a giant cinnamon roll of adorableness and love.Our hero and heroine this time is Kira and Aehako. Aehako is a very happy and very much optimist. Aehako was half in love with Kira when the reader first meets him. Kira was the first “extra” to be placed in the spaceship’s hold way back in the first novel.. She had a translator implanted in her ear against her will by the Little Green Men. For some reason, I pictured her as black and was a little thrown off when I notice through this re-read, the book mention her pale skin. I think it was Aehako calling her Sad Eyes that had me mentally casting Nicki Minaj as Kira. Nicki Minaj appears to me, very serious, sad and pretty at the same time. I decided that for me Kira still looks like Nicki and Ruby Dixon is wrong about her being white.Kira and Aehako sort of flip flop the Brooding Guy/Cheerful Chick. Kira was serious minded and brooding. I remember in a book Liz called her Debbie Downer. If a uncomfortable translator was shove in my ear forcing me to hear ever conversation, sexual moan, etc in the Tribal Caves I would probably be a Debbie Downer too. Anyway high five to Ruby Dixon for taking a common romantic trope and flipping it around in such a good way.I like Kira and Aehako’s story. I thought it was sweet, sad (Kira has a tragic backstory),and adorableness. Now I am going to mention a few spoilers, what I really don't’ like in this story and what I really like in this story.Kira hears that bad aliens are coming back via the translator. She arranges to get to the Elder Cave aka crashed starship with Aehako, Haeden (grumpy cat. :D), and Harlow. We haven’t seen much of Harlow’s character much up to this point. She was one of the “lucky ones”, stuck away in a tube waiting to be delivered. However nothing I had of Harlow suggested coward so when she “ran away from the Little Green Men and she will just have to deal with the consequences. I think she should have been one of the weepers. I could see one of those humans describe as weepers could have ran away. This is a small thorn to me as it what leads to Harlow’s story.However it does not stop me from enjoying this book. What I really like is quiet, somber brooding Kira who is careful, logical went Chuck Norris. She came up with a super plan and defeated the bad guys single handed. HOWEVER this moment of heroics didn't’ overwrite her personality. She’s still quiet, somber and brooding. She did display more confidence but was still recognizable as KiraI enjoy this book.In fact I think I liked it better this time than when I read it last year. I like Kira and Aehako. This book is very funny, and sexy and action pack. It is an excellent addition to the Ice Planet Barbarian series..

When the dreaded enemy returns to lay claim to the kidnapped women, Kira takes action and prepares to destroy them once and for all.I truly loved Aehako's laid back personality. He was a leader yet he knew life was short and enjoyed every moment the he was given. He relished the love he felt for Kira and strived to make her happy. Ruby Dixon is a master! It's a very well-written book and I knew the story of John Titor via various documentaries. I was really looking forward to reading this book as I was greatly hoping I would have a difficult time determining whether or not it was actually true. In chapter one there are two excerpts that kind of ruin the book for me before I really even got into it:"In 2015, Russia launched a surprise nuclear attack on the United States, Europe and China.""So in 2036, Titor climed into his 1967 Chevy, activated the C204 Gravity Distortion Unit in the back seat and began his journey to 1975."Had I purchased this book around 2013 or sooner I think it would have been a more intriguing read.

A fascinating account of John Titor's internet communications about the future, this book provides evidence that he was a time traveler sent back in time to retrieve an early computer necessary to the correction of a major technological problem. You will have to decide for yourself whether it's fact or fiction.

This is an excellent investigation piece. The author does a great job of laying out facts and letting the reader decide what to believe. I've known about the john titor story for a few years and found it to be great entertainment. However the way the author presents and organizes information has made me go from entertainment to hmmmm. I highly recommend this book to people who have always regarded the titor story as just great bit of fiction. It will definitely make you think

Interesting Book

I was thrilled when I stumbled across this book. The John Titor story fascinated me all those years ago. The whole idea of someone coming from the future, or putting on an elaborate hoax to say they did, is a good read whether you believe or not. It's just darn interesting to try and pull the story apart and work out your own truth, which the author openly suggests you do.There are moments in the book where I thought, 'hmm, there you go, that IS suspicious', maybe there is something to this time travel story. I'm completely open to the possibility. However, there are a few problems I have with some of the key points the author uses, and that in itself casts doubt over some of the other points he/she raised that I'm not well versed in. These particular issues are what warranted a middle-of-the-road 3 star rating from me.They are:1) The author speaks a lot about 'reasonable doubt'. I have reasonable doubt that he/she does truly know that much about the concept of reasonable doubt. And I quote ... "This book has shown reasonable doubt that Titor was what he said he was ...". From the author's perspective, he was trying to say that he has proved beyond reasonable doubt that John Titor is a Time Traveler. What he keeps repeating, is that there IS reasonable doubt that he IS a time traveller. A comical error repeatedly made. It disappointed me. As Mulder would say, "I want to believe", but this obvious mistake just really destroyed the whole mood ...2) The author says, "He correctly guessed Man-caused Global Warning was not happening". Umm. WHAT? This point was used as a tick in Titor's favour. However, I think it's very brash to come out with a statement like that, especially as elsewhere in the book the author repeatedly lashes out at the lack of professionalism of debunkers when he says, and I quote again, 'they were absolutely sure of so many things that just weren't so'. Sounds familiar. To support this point, I cite an article from The Guardian (16 May 2013) "Survey finds 97% of climate science papers agree warming IS man made". This is from a base of 12 000 peer-reviewed papers. I'm pretty sure this statistic proves exactly the opposite of what the author was getting at. People may still want to debate the whole climate change thing, but no-one can possibly say that it's been proven that it's not man made definitively ...3)Towards the end of the book, the author examines some ulterior motives as to why Titor would want to hoax. He said that some people thought that Titor was simply a gun-crazed nut, and examined the possibility that this hoax was motivated by this. The author then collated all Titor's references to guns. Personally, whether the guy is a time-traveler or not, I'm actually pretty convinced he was a 2nd amendment enthusiast and did love guns. The author then says, because Titor suggested not to stockpile weapons (when asked on the internet forums) this was excellent proof that Titor didn't have motivation to hoax. I have to say, 'I don't think so'. John Titor actually said, "No (to stockpiling). You will draw a great detail of negative attention to yourself". To me, all that proves is that Titor doesn't recommend stockpiling simply for the reason that it would drawn unwanted attention, and no other reason. And if Titor has a motive about guns, he wouldn't want 'unwanted attention' now, would he?Overall, I have to say, I enjoyed reading this book, even if it was just to debate (with myself) the different points.After reading it, I'm no closer to believing he was an actual time traveler (jury is out). But I did find some of the 'social commentary' enlightening. Interestingly, if he were a time traveler, whose to say that he hasn't got a different motive than is mentioned in this book. He is awfully fond of guns, absolutely dedicated to the constitution as is (including the 2nd amendment) and is dead keen on US civil war. In fact he thinks it would be good for us, (and did I mention that he really doesn't like our generation ...). And, I guess something that he would fight for, given the supposed civil war that should be happening soon (based on 2.5% divergence that it didn't happen in 2005), something in line with the motivation of the civil war being about an infringement and loss of rights of personal freedoms versus the governments perspective that rights need to be infringed for security purposes. That whole bit has played out 'socially' and continues to hover around in the US, particularly since Sandy Hook, about introducing gun laws. And I think without stating it, this is what Titor was about. Which still could mean he's from the future, because he's kind of on the money there, else it is his motivation to stir civil unrest to protect the 2nd amendment. Whatever the truth, I think that guns a big part of his motivation.

Weather or not John Titor is real or not this book makes you at least consider the possibility. I didn't know anything about this subject until I read this book, now I can say maybe.

I am a certified sign language interpreter who recently started teaching a sign language class at my church. Up until now, I've never found a book with which I was completely satisfied. I always ended up adding a lot of supplementary materials, many of which I had to develop. Thank God for this book / DVD set. Starting beginners with basic ASL phrases instead of disjointed vocabulary words is a WONDERFUL way to get them interested! Grammar can then be explained as it occurs naturally. I know I will be using this book and DVD for many years!

This book and CD are perfect I teach American sign language to my students in the middle school and high school setting and it's perfect would highly recommend I've bought about 12 of them already

Fantastic book and so is the dvd that comes with however the only problem is the DVD when they are showing you how to do the phrases and words the zip through it and it doesn't take the time to repeat or go slow so you can understand and fully grasp it

The book does a decent job as far as explaining the different signs. The only gripe I have is that the person demonstrating on the DVD moves way too fast. I am constantly rewinding the video to make sure I saw the sign done correctly.

I have to say I really like this book. There are many phrases to learn that you use every day. Not only that but the illustration is good. I would recommend taking this with you all the time (like a Spanish/Italian/French dictation book) wherever you go while in training. I often get stuck, or freeze when I don't know exactly how to say something, so this comes in handy for a quick reference.

This book is great to help you grasp different kinds of ASL structures and phrasing, but I gave it four stars because the drawings, in my opinion, aren't very clear and I usually had to cross check signs with other books/websites to make sure I was doing them correctly (an issue I haven't had with many other books).

The American Sign Language Phrase Book with DVD is a good ASL book to keep in ones library.It was recommended by my ASL tutor. If one has a choice to get American Sign Language Phasebook, I would purchase the one with the dvd. The pictures in the book are good but having a morethree dimensional viewing with the dvd. Also, I would recommend, The Gallaudet Dictionary of American SignLanguage which come with a dvd.

Great book it is taking me to the next level of just learning, alphabets, colors , family members, room name of the house, greetings, and community workers. Now I can use what I have already learned and apply it to this new information I am now learning. Thanks. I want to use sign language with My masters Degree of special education.

The Sports Illustrated Book for Track and Field should be in every coaches library! I love this book. I keep a copy to reinforce the information I give to my athletes as well as to remind myself of different drills I can instruct the students with and to keep realistic expectations for the middle school and high school athletes I work with. This book contains sample workouts as well that have come through in a crunch when I needed a quick workout for the kids. This book is good for new coaches as well as more experienced coaches and contains wonderful information on the High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump,Pole Vault, Shot Put, Discus, Javelin, and Hammer Throw as well as different Plyometric exercises. Great book at any price!

I first saw this book a my local library back in 1993 and it has helped me with my coaching at the junior college level ever since. I recommend this book to field event coaches of all levels. I have been wondering where I could buy this book, because no retail bookstore carries this subject. I even thought about telling the library that I lost it and paying for it that way!
