My mother, who is now 91 years old, gardened all her adult life. She bought Dick Raymond's "Joy of Gardening" when it was first published in the early 80's and recently recommended it to me. I purchased the Kindle version and refer to it almost daily. It not only is an excellent reference book, it is very enjoyable to just read.Dick Raymond provides directions on soil preparation, plant and variety selection, planting, fertilizing, etc. in a well organized fashion. There is a good index and is divided into chapter based on plant types. There are plenty of photographs that provide a visual aid in understanding some of his more complex instructions. He addresses pest control, crop rotation, harvesting, weed control and the use of cover crops. I know the material in his book is original mainly because I have never seen it anywhere else, such as "not fertilizing corn at the time it is planted". He recommends fertilizing the corn but at several intervals after it has germinated and has a good start in its growth cycle.If a person could only have one gardening book, this should be it. I highly recommend this to anyone that has either a casual or a serious interest in gardening. I plan to pass it on to my son. There will then be three generation of hobby gardeners in my family that will have used Dick Raymond's book.

This book is an excellent resource for home gardening. It is easy to follow and gave this novice gardener plenty of useful information for raising fruits/vegetables in my back yard.I have several other gardening books, with a variety of different views/techniques, but I favor this one over all the others.This man grew vegetables in a patch of dirt in a gravel driveway! I don't plan to follow that example but he convinced me that even I could grow stuff and I have been getting a good harvest of tomatoes, beans, lettuces, cabbage, onions, carrots, okra, eggplant, melons, strawberries, etc. for three years in my raised beds.This is a great book and the info you gain can be used on large or small gardens. How you use it is up to you.

I never gardened until I moved to Vermont a few years back. As a city slicker I was amazed a little seed in some dirt could amount to anything. I got a few gardening books to help me, but this one handed to me by my mother-in-law was the very best (I found the others, especially "Gardening for Dummies" a waste of money). Dick's book is filled with photos of just about any run-of-the-mill vegetable (such as the tomato) as well as the more exotic (like my favorite, the brussels sprout). With clear and easy to follow directions and photos, Dick guides you through the process of growing any vegetable successfully. My second season of gardening I had an incredible bounty of tomatoes as my fellow gardeners' tomatoes were hit by blight - I just followed Dick's suggestions for planting and mulching. With the help of this book, I became a somewhat comfortable organic vegetable gardener. I just bought it for a friend on the West Coast as a housewarming gift - he plans to plant his first garden ever, and as he spoke, I just knew this book would help him.The only caveats I would add are: 1) I did not find much success with his seed-scattering method. For some veggies, he suggests using a wide row and putting seeds in a salt shaker to scatter and over-sow, and then raking through to thin the young sprouts. I did find his wide-row method helpful for planting more in a smaller area, but I found I had to plot out where things would go. 2) This is a book for organic vegetable gardening. If you are interested in commercial pesticides or primarily in flower-gardening, this book is not for you.Good luck & happy planting!

As far as I'm concerned, this is the best and most comprehensive gardening book that I have ever seen. I grew up in the same era as the author did, gardened as he did and found the book highly readable and completely practical. It gives so much great information in a clear way that I don't think most people would find that it lacks anything they need to be a successful gardener. With today's high food prices, this is a terrific resource to grow your own food and save money. I love the fact that the advice the author gives will enable others to garden organically if they wish. In addition, the gardener gets great exercise. I think so much of this book that I gave a copy to each of our daughters-in-law. I highly recommend it!

After moving to the Texas Hill Country from Houston in 1982, we found we had a great abundance of one thing...... ROCK. The average top soil depth was 1 inch or less, but after a survey of our property we found a part of our land with good top soil depth. The gardening fever was upon us!As urban gardeners, we found it a bit different growing crops in the country! During our first season we had a painful wildlife feeding education. What the deer, coons, and squirrels didn't eat the bugs did. After the neighbors stopped laughing at us, we did build a high fence for the next season.To begin our second season our lightweight "city tiller" died. We bought a Troy Built tiller. Along with this new tiller came an advertisement for "The Joy of Garding" book by Dick Raymond. Our gardening life dramatically changed.After reading the book we knew exactly what to do instead of guessing. Our friends and neighbors now come to us for advice. The best advice we can give them is a copy of Dick Raymond's book.P.S. After 28 years I still use the original book and tiller.

Bought the eBook. Had no page numbers, only locations. This is a big problem when your professor says read pages 22-58 and give a response when you have no idea what pages those are. This is a big flaw in Amazon / Kindle.

The cover art should match the images and information in the book, and that was my biggest concern. Inside the book all of the men and women have darker skin. (pages 30, 39, 79, 307, 309 and more) But for some reason on the cover of the book the people are a white skinned. I needed this book for my Old Testament class and it helped tremendously! I have learned a lot from it and I read through it while also highlighting scripture in my personal bible.

Had to have this book for my Old Testament bible class and I loved the book so much I bought instead of renting it.

REALLY great resource! Walks you through the books and gives you a lens of most theological views on the writer/book

Laurent Dubois is the author of Avengers of the New World: The Story of the Haitian Revolution, a Los Angeles Times Best Book of 2004. The Marcello Lotti Professor of Romance Studies and History at Duke University, Dubois has written on Haiti for the Los Angeles Times, The Nation, and the New Yorker Web site, among other publications, and is the codirector of the Haiti Lab at the Franklin Humanities Institute. He lives in Durham, North Carolina.

I picked up this history of Haiti after seeing it appear on the NY Times Notable Books of 2012 list. I have always been looking to read a good history of Haiti in advance of going to visit the county and having completed this book I now feel as if I have a much better idea of what the country is all about and how it came to be where it is. I found it quite interesting to read the author's explanation for how Haiti has struggled over the years with having to pay so much of its income back to France and other occupiers as a tax. That seems to have really debilitated the country and probably set it back many years from where it really could be. I thought his treatment of the early years of the country was good but a bit longish and dull. The part that I really wanted to read more about was the time when Doc Duvalier and his son Baby Doc Duvalier were in power and although he surely did address that in the final chapter of the book, I felt it could have been more descriptive. Finally, he really did not touch on the devastating earthquake of a few years ago at all other than to mention it in passing once. Given the magnitude of that disaster and how it has affected modern-day Haiti, I would have liked to have seen more about that. That said, if you are looking for a good general history of Haiti, its rulers, and its relationship to other countries including the US, then this is a good book to read.

This book now appears to be out of print and I can only hope the publisher will allow the author to release a new edition. The history of Haiti is quite complex - I have read many of them and by far this is the most comprehensive explanation of the multiple successes and failures of various regimes and periods of history of any I have reviewed. I have been to Haiti 47 times working in their public health sector. This book clarified much of what I had learned from others first hand, read elsewhere or surmised from what various locals were recounting of their past.

Great book... easy to read.. could use a timeline with names somewhere. After listening to the Revolutions podcast I wanted to get a broader overview, something I could refer to and some contemporary perspective. Been to the country twice so it's definitely nice to get an idea of the history. Recommend.

I was worried by low-star reviews, but I found the book to be a great primer, well-written, compelling, and full of sources and ways to branch out into further, deeper study. The book ends in a rush, with Aristide, parts one and two, the earthquake, and the problems with NGOs; however, this is the epilogue. The book's chapters, running through the reign of the Duvaliers, are substantial and worth it. I will say, though, that if one of your main aims is to learn about Aristide then this is not the book for you. Yet, I maintain that, for what it is, it is a very good book, and I highly recommend it.

Breaks my heart to learn and understand how we treated these hard working people. Seems Europe and the US just saw them as pawns, cheap labor and another world they could exploit. Unfortunately, small Haiti did not have the ability to fend off the foreign "invaders" who often corrupted even well meaning leaders.

A great little history of the nation of Haiti. I have read others that were much more dense. This one was easy to keep up with an told the story very well. The section on the occupation by the US Marines was chilling, especially to this former marine. I saw some names there that I recognized as marines that went on to greatness and fame in later actions, though Dubois did not mention it. If you are looking to understand the current situation in Haiti, this book will help you a lot.

Well written and very informative, answered many questions I had and could not get answers for in other books. It falls short of offering a, at least theoretical, practical solution. It left me feeling sad that the glorious independence of Haiti was perhaps too soon, too unprepared, too hasty, and after over 200 years of existence they still do nor know how to get out of their sufferings.

After reading the book for background on a visit to Haiti, I was struck by the shear wealth of the US compared to that poor country. Most Americans see more cash in a day than a Haitian sees in a year. I commend Mr. BEZOS for his success but that man could buy that country, build a fullment center in a week, and employ them all. But if AMAZON cant treat his current emplyees any better than a farm animal hes probably not the answer.. wake up BEZOS!! Your gonna be in ZUCKs shoes
