I can pinpoint one or two but never saw the meteor showers even although they are right in front of me.I find it fascinating to learn about all them because one day I may be able to see them. I did find the stars in the west are more visible to me than here in Northeast.There are other things you will need, also a bit of knowledge about the galaxies and sun, moon and stars.Like the examples shown in diagrams of how to find them all, kind of like connecting the dots.Liked the charts of the upcoming lunar and solar eclipses.

I bought this book for my son for his 8th birthday. This book is well written and even though he has a hard time reading some things he has not put this book down. I highly recommend this book if you are getting a smaller (cheaper) telescope for a child or just someone who wants to star gaze!

This book guided me well as I learned about astronomy. It explains quite a bit about the reasons for the way things appear in the lens, what you can expect to see, things that you should aim to see and how to get the most from your telescope. It's the best place to start.

Bought for my wife as a gift to go along with the telescope i bought her. She is not much of a talker but she spent 3 days after christmas going through and telling me about what and when we could go into the back yard and see things. I asked her and she said she loves it. Its an extremely basic book so don't expect to be an astronomer after the first read through.

As someone relatively new to this hobby, I acquired a lot of references, both in print and electronic. I have to say that, considering the covariates of size, scope, target and usability, this may be the best one of them all. You won't have all the scientific background on the targets, so you do have to have other sources for that, but in terms of an actual quick and effective go-to reference, it can't be beat. It is honestly and competently written, by an author who does not claim anything he can't deliver, and who writes with a nice mix of competence and humility. The book is also quite new, and therefore contains up-to-date information, compared to some of the classic standards. It has given me great joy, and I plan to get the next one, geared for mid-size telescopes, as well. Highly recommended.

This book is perfect for somebody with little to no prior knowledge of astronomy. It's written in a short and simple to understand format and is very realistic for the first time telescope user. Other books make things more complicated than they need to be. The author started in the hobby himself with a telescope that cost under $14 so anyone can enjoy looking at the stars with a small budget with the help of this book!

I bought this for my budding astronomer for Christmas to go along with a new telescope. She's flipped through this book many times now and has already discovered a few things in the night sky. I like that the book gives realistic expectations of what you can use your telescope to find and gives her the chance to find them on her own or with minor assistance from us.

This is a pretty nice guide to beginner stargazing! Each "thing" has a challenge rating and a picture accompanying the directions which were super helpful when I was trying to find some of the stars. I'm super excited to share this with my sister!

At 154 pages I have always been fascinated that an author could pack so much information into so few pages. I have had a lifelong interest in birds - as a wee lad I was extremely aware of them and found each and everyone of them I spotted (I did not know the names of most) interesting and delightful. I began "serious" birding later in life than some in the late 1960s. Birding has become one of my life passions; but that being said, I must assure you that I am NOT an expert! No, no, no! Far from it as a matter of fact. Each passing year I learn more and more and discover that much I thought I knew I actually did not know...or at least did not know it well enough.Enter this book; "Sibley's Birding Basics."I purchased my first copy around 2005, a couple of years after it was first published. I read it and reread it and read it again...and on and on. Each time I went through the book I grumbled under my breath (I still do as a matter of fact), that I wished I had had this book and the information in it right from the beginning. My life would have been much richer had I had access to the information found in this thing.Now this brings us to the only quibble I have concerning what is probably the best of all the Sibley books (I have all of them) and that would be the title. By using in the title the word "Basics" it gives the potential reader that this is a book meant for the beginning birder and only the beginning birder. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Yes, it is a most wonderful book for the novice, not doubt about that, but it is also of extreme value to the most experienced of birders.The book is organized in chapters which include: Getting Started, Finding Birds, The Challenges of Bird Identification, Misidentification, Identifying Rare Birds, Taxonomy, Using Behavioral Clues, Voice, Understanding Feathers, Feather Arrangement and Color Patterns, Structure of Tail and Winds, Bare Parts, Molt, Feather Wear, Age Variation and Ethics and Conservation.The illustrations in this work are absolutely the best. The text is clear and concise and extremely readable in informative and the illustrations and text blend perfectly. As the author writes, he shows you what he is writing about.I dread the day (I say with tongue in cheek and somewhat sarcastically) when I become one of those folks I meet now and then that simply know everything about birds and bird identification there is to know and are quick to tell you about it. One of the nicest things about birding is that there is always something to learn and indeed, to relearn from time to time. I am rather convinced that this little book is of great value to both the rank beginner and to the birder who has been beating the bushes for decades.Due to being rather absent minded and quite disorganized (Long story which I will not bore you with), I recent "misplaced" my original copy of this book, ergo I was forced to buy this new one.Now, If I can just learn to distinguish and identify all the warbles and sparrows that flit though my life I will die a happy guy...sigh. I got this book to serve as an introduction to birding. I was expecting something that would give me all the info I needed to begin birding. It turns out that that is not what this book is, but it is fabulous nonetheless.If you want to start birding you will need a reference book, which this is not. This is more like a textbook containing information on technique. This is much smaller than a textbook though, certainly an appropriate size to take into the field. Although, like a text book, the information isn't formatted in a way that would be useful for split-second reference. For referencing in the field, you could use highlighters and post-its to mark useful information, or simply take notes. Although, practice would certainly eliminate the need for physical notes as you get used to good technique.Although it wasn't what I expected, I still found this book to contain great information and would recommend it to any beginner or novice.

This book was absolutely critical to my education and development as a birder. I read it right when I was starting out and it fully prepared me for what to expect out in the field. Going out for the first time, I didn't feel overwhelmed when I spotted something I didn't recognize. I felt like I knew where to look, how to look, and what to look for to make the accurate identification. Obviously every birder needs substantial time in the field before they really know what they're doing, but this book really helps you know where to start. Even after more experience, I still find myself going back to it on a regular basis for a refresher - it's just that good. It's easy to read, straight forward, and filled with tons of helpful information. I think it's a must have for birders of every skill level.**Specifically for the Kindle edition: All the illustrations and diagrams and clear, well-sized, and easy to read on the Kindle. The only downside is you can't see the color in the illustrations since Kindle's are only black and white - BUT you can download the Kindle app for your computer and see the illustrations in full-color there.

Several of the strong reviews are from people who have clearly been advid bird watchers for years. I am not in that category. I watched birds a lot as a child (Eagle Boy Scout and all that), but as my professional life developed, I didn't have the time to seriously observe birds. So I wanted to add that for the causal bird watcher who wants to get more serious, this book is amazing, incredible, wonderful, remarkable, astonding - I teach my students not to go on with adjectives - but I can't help it. I have learned so much reading this book. The hints and insights that Shibley has assembled in this guide are a treasure. The methods he lays out for more accurate identifications are wonderful. My bird watching has improved immensely because of this guide. I thought it would only help me be more accurate in my identifications, but it has increased the pleasure of bird watching for me so much. I am truly amazed.For the causal bird watcher, this small, easy-to-read volume is a must. Do yourself a favor and put this in your cart now. You will be glad you did.

Okay, you can buy this book for the recipes. they're in there, like diamonds in a pile of rock, except the rock is a bunch of gems in its own right.You can learn the history of chili and associated Texas chow and you can learn how foreign influences like California and Ohio have tried to insinuate contaminates into the perfection that is Texas chili.You can read about personalities and quirks and have a good time doing it.And at the end of the day, or in time for dinner, you can grab some meat and some peppers and make your own pot of heaven. It's called chili.

Francis Tolbert's "A Bowl of Red" is an enjoyable read. He was a columnist in Texas, and this book seems to be based on some of his columns. (The narration jumps from first person to third person, and touches on various topics--sounds like he borrowed heavily from his columns in compiling this book.) While he spends a lot of time discussing the beginnings and early years of the Chili cook-off in Terlingua, Texas, in the most substantial part of the book he traces the evolution of chili con carne as it appeared in the southwest. His premise is that it evolved as a staple of the chuck wagon cooks on cattle drives and roundups. There are some interesting recipes in here which I'm looking forward to trying (I prefer bean-less chili with a decent amount of cumin), but this isn't a cookbook in the classic sense--more of a meditation/observation on various aspects of southwestern cuisine.

Great history and tales revolving around chili, from the Texas cowboy point of view, which is the correct one. A uniquely told story by an expert on the subject. Sometimes, nothing beats a bowl of chili.

Frank X. Tolbert was one of Texas best storytellers, and with this book he captured more than how to cook chili, he captured what chili is as a part of Texan culture. It is a great read whether you cook or not. And his basic chili recipe is a hell of a place to start for a great bowl of red.

This book is about Texas Chili; made the way God meant for it to be made,No beans or tofu.and chunks of beef shoulder or brisket ie no chicken or ground beef.

Frank Tolbert's A Bowl of Red started out as a series of columns in the Dallas News but it's hard to define exactly what this book is in terms of form. It's not really a cookbook but I've made terrific chilis from his suggested recipes. It's not even completely about chili, although it starts out with that classic American (not Mexican) dish. Tolbert starts with a rambling history of the origins of chili in Texas cuisine and uses that as a base for wandering around through southwestern cuisine, famous Texas and southern cooks, ghost towns, European immigrants in Texas, the science of chili, chuck wagon chefs and too many other topics to list. His descriptions of the first several World Series of Chili Cookoffs in Terlingua, Texas read like a combination of the Marx Brothers and P.J.O'Rourke.It may be hard to believe but this book is hard to put down. It's one of a kind.

If you love Texas lore and history or food lore and history, you will love this book. More stories than recipes and very entertaining.

Very disappointed in the book. Not enough recipes and the recipes that were in the book were difficult to find and use. The stories were not that entertaining and didn't have a good flow. Read the book for the little bit of history and get your recipes from the internet

Good, complete history of this SAC mainstay - still serving 50 years after the last one was built. As always with his books, complete description of variants and versions. Good history of B-52 operations in Viet Nam and the Gulf wars. Discussions of how aircraft and units were shifted around and re-named sometimes gets a little tedious.

This was a good history of the B-52, but presented in a dry fact based style. If you were not a Cold War Warrior you probably won't enjoy this book. I used it to codify my service in SAC. I did like that Bowman gave each aircraft's multiple names; as they were transferred to different Wings they were often re-named, or named after a WWII bomber. Also, the appendices contained the specifics on each modification, various weapons, model types and the tail numbers of every B-52 ever produced.

As a former B-52 gunner, I wasn't bored by the technical details. But, it does have a few editorial issues. And it didn't make the transition to kindle smoothly, charts, and some photos are unreadable. I'll keep itfor oldtimes sake and portability.

ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS THAT I HAVE READ ON THE B52!!!!

This book is exactly what the title says. Anything you might want to know about the B 52 is here. All the models and modifications are covered very well. Very well illustrated. A few personal stories are included, but it is really all about the plane. It had a good bibliography and index. I recommend it.

Excellent review of the operational history of the BUFF. Great details of the different configurations of the jet and the reasons they came to be.

Especially interedting for me because I had the priveleliged of flying with the B-52 crews while performing my duties as a Flight Surgeon at Fairchild AFB In the early 70's.
