Fuchs provides clear explanations and memorable examples of the importance of the non-medical determinants of health, the dominant role of physicians in health care expenditures, the necessity of choices about health at the individual and societal levels, and many other compelling themes. Now, in a new introduction of some 8,000 words including new tables and figures, Fuchs, often called the "Dean of health economists," concisely summarizes the major changes of the past 37 years in health, medical care, and health policy. He focuses primarily on the United States but includes remarks about health policy in other countries, and addresses the question of whether national health care systems are becoming more alike. Massive misconception in the minds of humans that health comes from medical care!Why do people get sick? Because they don't live in an environment that nurtures caring for our bodies. The focus should be put on healing the environment, then people living in it won't be sick.

In an effort to get up to speed on healthcare economics, I purchase Victor Fuchs' _Who Shall Live?_ and Arnold Kling's _Crisis of Abundance: Rethinking How We Pay for Health Care_ together in hopes of obtaining a balanced view of the subject. I was not disappointed in either book.Fuchs' book was originally published in 1975, but now contains new material added in the wake of the Clinton era attempt at creating universal health care. Regardless, the original material is just as valid now as then. Fuchs outlines the roles of patients, doctors, hospitals, drugs, and financing in contributing to the costs of health care. It is written by an accomplished health care economist, but for the laymen, so mathematics does not show up frequently. In clear terms, Fuchs goes through a number of standard arguments, providing data to back up the arguments that show that some standard arguments are correct and some are wrong. After reading this, the most rabid pro-universal health care enthusiast should have their expectations tempered. I don't know if the most rabid enthusiast against universal health care will be won over by his arguments in favor of some type of system. Yes, he is in favor of something; though it is not clear that he would support any of the current proposals, it seems very clear that he is against some of the arguments used to support those proposals.Kling's book was written much more recently. Kling's approach requires a great deal more understanding by his audience of some of the mathematical and economic arguments offered. Kling offers more specifics in the way of policy proposals, but I'm not sure how realistic they are.One thing that both men seem to agree on is that the current system is far to prone to apply too much expensive technology for too little return. We are nearly to the point where doctors will order an MRI scan for a hangnail on the basis that we don't want to overlook something (and besides, "someone else" is paying for it). Insurance against catastrophic, unexpected, high expenses has given way to a system in which everyone wants insurance to pay for band-aids for their boo-boos. Doctors are unusually resistant to scientific management (including standard practices and checklists) and more likely to "go with their gut", follow tradition, or make moral cases for heroic efforts for every case no matter how slight the effect on outcome. Because of this, there is as much variation in costs and life expectancy between regions in the US as there is between the US and European countries (and there is as much difference in infant mortality and life expectancy between income groups in Great Britain as in the US). So both seem skeptical about the influence of finance or maintaining a commitment to insulating the average person from cost, both seem to emphasize that we should concentrate more on helping the very poor and very sick, and both seem to think that a health care plan should include some commitment to a research body that endorses (not mandates) standard approaches to diagnosis. I was surprised that neither put any emphasis on tort reform.I enjoyed both books and found something to think about in each, but if I had to pick one to recommend to people to come up to speed on the issue, it would be the Fuchs book.

On reading this book I kept experiencing the urge to wave it in the face of my well-meaning friends and wider acquaintance and force them to read it under duress. Quite simply, it makes perfect sense. Content-wise, I think the review under the hardback edition will fill you in more objectively than I could hope to.What I do want to do is recommend this book to any med students struggling to cope with their seemingly-freakish interest in health economics and policy. The med school fare is almost totally devoid of any discussion of such issues, which I may consider criminal considering doctors work as part of a system and not in isolation, but is hardly surprising given the near-universal lack of interest amongst the students. Stop trying to bully your friends into arguing with you and put the energy into getting your library to buy a copy of this book. Then consider selling off your anatomy textbook to pay for your own.

This book is essentially a sequel to An Embarrassment of Mangoes. The author and her husband return to sailing around the Caribbean. The book revolves around their travels to various islands. It contains witty and funny stories about the people they encounter, the differences of the islands, and most of all the food. The writing reveal a deep longing and fondness for the experience they had. The recipes are delicious and, if you cook them while reading the book, more deeply connect you to the experiences and people described.It is not quite as good as the original, partly because it is missing the subtext of the original departure from their busy lives, the authentic conflict of learning to live on a boat, and the newness of visiting the places that Embarrassment of Mangoes presented us with; however it does contain more deep character development, more detailed descriptions of places, and is eloquently told. If you like the escape of An Embarrassment of Mangoes then this is a good choice. If you haven't read it, read it first.

I wish they talked more about the boat and voyage just as much as the food. I love the descriptions of the cooking and spices and perrpers of the islands. I think they could have squeezed a small page before each country about the summary of the voyage and conditions in between. The authur(s) cultural idiosyncrasies are amusing and apparently proper polite Canadian dialects. The dialect adds to the clear picture of polite Canadians in unique cultural situations. Pretty entertaining.

I have really enjoyed the book. Here first books was a very entertaining read about their travels in the caribbean. This books takes un into the kitchens of the people they met. Vanderhoof has taken the time to get to know the people in her travels. They have shared with her how they create those dishes. My wife and I have traveled the caribbean for the past 10 years but we have never been in one place more than a week to get to know the people to the same depth that Vanderhoof has. She recreates those recipes which I have tried and found to be very good. I'm currently making the pepper rum from the recipe in this book and am excited to try it. I love the culture, food, rum, and people of the caribbean. The food and flavors of the caribbean are rich and spicy. Vanderhoof takes the time to show where some of the flavors have originated from. Then those flavors are infused into there own national dishes. Vanderhoof gives people an insight into those cultures through food. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book.

This is the second part of a memoir about a Canadian couple's solo journey through the Caribbean on a small sailboat. Both are "foodies," and each chapter ends with a recipe using seasoning and ingredients native to the island they're visiting -- moreover, the "flavor" of the islands permeates the story as well as the food. The first volume, "An Embarrassment of Mangos," is the more adventurous story -- because they were such novices (such uptight novices) that it's easy to relate to two people on a 42-foot boat who see the dentist and the lawyer (to write their wills)before leaving Ontario.

I loved, Loved, LOVED An Embarrassment of Mangoes, and waiting impatiently for another wonderful Journey with Ann and Steve. However this one left me a bit cold. It just didn't seem to have either the passion or the heart of the other book, and often seemed disjointed. Maybe I wanted more of the sailing life, and this one is definitely more the eating life. While her food descriptions and recipes remain top-notch, I guess I was looking for more stories and relationships.

Bought this for my mom to read while she was on vacation in Grenada and she said it was wonderful.

It's snowing here, but we have tried several of the recipes as we prepare to move aboard our boat and head south. The people, the places, the tastes -- all are vividly presented. Cannot wait for our own adventure to begin so we can savor some of the more exotic tastes of the Islands.

I hope Ann continues to write more books. The way she brings the people and places to life on the pages is the next best thing to being there.

So while i was disappointed with the overall low quality of the 2 no claim books g Bailey i think learned her lesson when she returned to finish evies story and she did fantastic job from start to finish heart wrenching great read filled with alot of good thing's and a few suprises towards the end that i didnt see coming but yes overall loved this book! And though its time to say goodbye to evie and her men and the rest of the amazing characters in this series hali is getting her book which i cant wait to see plus theres gonna be reaper spin off or something in this world eventually as well but regardless epic work and thankfully nothing was messed up :) evie will honestly out of all g Bailey characters evie will always be my favirote well evie and hali yes but mainly evie XD

Evie is the true Queen, but can she really her people to fight together or will they perish in the war against Cex?I absolutely LOVED the love in this book. Evie didn't hold back and I think she is stronger for showing/telling her feelings to her loved ones.And the ending! I did not expect that from Erica, but it was great!Can't wait to read Hali's story to revisit these great characters and I'm interested in the Reapers story too!

It was so bitter sweet to read this book. This is one of my favorite series from Ms. Bailey and I didn’t want it to end. It was such a great ending to the series though. I’ve loved Evie from the start! She loves bacon and has a kick ass tiger, what is there not to love? But back to this final book, I think I loved how this particular book focused on family and the importance of family. I was so impressed with Evie’s dad. In prior books I wasn’t sure how I felt about him but In this book he really showed his true colors and became the father Evie needed. I also loved Evie and her interaction with her men. There was so much love between them.

I have genuinely enjoyed this series and am sad to see it come to an end. That being said, I loved the ending to this series. Evie, who has quickly become one of my favorite characters, faced off against her greatest challenge, discovered her true feelings for each of her men, and found her place in the world. I love how vulnerable she is at times, and how her guys support her through everything. This was the perfect ending to a great series.

I am sad that this is the conclusion of Evie's story but I am immensely happy with the way everything wrapped up. I love Evie and she didn't disappoint in her final battle. She is always willing to give everything she has for those she loves. There were a few emotional parts of the story and I recommend reading them with bacon near by to ease the nerves or tears. This was overall another fantastic series by G. Bailey.

This series has you swept up from the very first beginning all the way to the end... It will be so hard to say goodbye to Evie her men and star , but hopefully in her next series she will make appearances, who knows , could be another series for her daughter's .... Such an awe and spectacular read , never a disappointment, Thank you G for introducing us to Evie.... This book was reviewed by a Book Loving Vixen

I am so at a loss for words after reading this fantastic finale to Evie's story. There are so many surprises that will blow your mind and the end is so sweet it about made me cry. Great World building with characters you can love. Total must read!!! I loved it so I give it 5/5 stars.

What an awesome wrap up of this series. I totally enjoyed this series which was full of plenty of action and each book grabbed me quickly and were hard to put down.

This _Haggadah_ has an excellent English translation along with the Hebrew text. However, Baskin's exquisite illustrations distinguish this _Haggadah_ from thousands of other good choices. Get softcover copies for most _Seder_ participants (to save both money and space at the always crowded table), but (if the budget will stretch) get the large hard cover edition for the leader and anyone with poor eye sight.Leaving out the Plagues would render both the _Seder_ and the _Haggadah_ nonkosher. They are there. Really.

We have been colecting this Haggadah soon after I inherited 5 of them from my parents. The version I own is dated 1923, grey hard cover, pictures and songs. I collect them in order to have one for everyone who attends our seder. I now own 18 and would buy more. The Haggadah is very complete as to directions, songs, games and illustrations. The only thimg missing is the "Plagues"

The Natural World Eastern Bali draws adventurers who want to climb its volcanic peaks, hike in its rain forests, raft its rough rivers, and dive the coral reefs that line its coasts. Rain forest blankets areas all the way to the coast, where drier terrain takes over. Although there are no national parks in this region, there are several notable wildlife havens. The western end of Bali may not have much in the way of cultural performances, nightlife, or shopping, but it's a great place to escape from traffic, hawkers, and other tourists and do some exploring. Much of the region is taken up by the Bali Barat National Park, which offers diving, snorkeling, and trekking -- and a chance to see the rare Bali starling, which scientists are trying to save from extinction in the park's breeding area. Nightlife Bali's best nightspots are all in the south, the traditional gathering place for young and restless travelers. On the southwest coast, Canggu, Kerobokan, and Seminyak are where the rich, refined, and beautiful gather at eclectic bars and ethnic restaurants for quiet drinks, live jazz, and worldly conversations. Legian has become the club town, with discos and after-hours bars that keep night owls going until dawn. Kuta and Tuban reverberate 24 hours with the sounds of pop and heavy metal from big bars and international restaurants where tourists start the day's drinking at noon. Nusa Dua's nightlife is quieter, limited mostly to resort bars and clubs, with a few cocktail spots along Jalan Pantai Mengiat. Sanur's nightlife takes place in hotel and restaurant bars, except for a couple of clubs on Jalan Tamblingan. Shopping High-quality crafts, low prices, and professional shipping services make Bali one of the best places in Indonesia to shop. You'll find the ultimate in open-air market browsing in southern Bali, where traditional Asian-style shopping still thrives. Denpasar is still very much a market town, -- to say nothing of the numerous night markets throughout the city. On Lombok shopping is largely limited to locally made handicrafts, fabrics, and the like, and if that's what you're looking for, you can go right to the source to find skillfully made pieces. Prices are a little lower than they are on Bali. In addition to local baskets, pottery, and textiles, you'll be able to find crafts from islands farther east. You can shop for these things in the bustling city markets, such as the daily market in Cakranegara. Better yet, go to the villages where the crafts are produced; you'll find higher-quality goods and have a chance to see masters at work.
