Let me start off by saying that I have a degree in fine art and NOT computer science or anything else that's related to computers.With that out of the way, I can honestly say that the author of this book is methodical, concise, and complete in his descriptions. If you're looking for a picture book with drawings and diagrams you may want to look somewhere else.I will say that I approached this book with an absolute basic understanding of the concept of a variable, a string and that was about it. I had tried to read/surf the net about functions, classes, and loops but never really found a definitive source that could explain the concepts for my "art" brain to digest. This book has answered the call. I'm sure you've read similar statements but I'll say it again, don't expect to learn a programming language after reading a couple of pages and copying some code. I'm starting chapter 3 after having the book for approx. 1 week and I have a solid understanding of variable types, cout, cin, how to perform basic arithmetic in C++, calling functions, and parameters just to name a few. For a person with a creative and not-so-computer tech mindset, this is a major accomplishment.The pacing is nice if you're willing to read the material, review, and actually do the exercises at the end of the chapters. Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and confidently learning C++ thanks to this book.If I have just one criticism I would say that I wish there were answers for every exercise question. I understand the reasoning for not having answers to all of the exercise problems(the amount of pages it would take to create the answers would be insane). Still, there is an answer key for the review questions and some of the exercises.

I took several C++ Program In Computing courses while in college, and I must say, this book did a fantastic job of turning the what was then "clear as mud" concepts to something I could understand.Since those courses, I've learned C and a few other languages, but this book does a fantastic job of introducing OO concepts to a programmer, or a beginner who was otherwise doing procedural programs, or was just starting fresh. Lafore goes over the benefits of OO, and slowly builds on top of concepts throughout the book until you get a good overall understanding of the theory and the practice.Two things I didn't like about the book:1. There was very little discussion about doing things the "right way". By this, I mean, Lafore didn't really mention how certain methods of writing programs were less efficient than others. It looks like he was using the best practices in the book, so maybe that would have been overkill, but going a bit more in depth about why to do certain things certain ways would have been nice. While this is a beginner book, it certainly doesn't hurt to have sidenotes of this nature for those interested.2. While the majority of the code in this book was portable to most platforms, it's still assumed that you're going to be on a Windows plaform, and Lafore uses several Windows-only graphics libraries to illustrate some points. Being a UNIX guy, I would have preferred that he stick to a platform neutral explanation.

Had to buy this book for a programming class. Still useful today since i forgot a lot of things. AWesome book.

The writing is thorough and easy to read. The book has helped iron out the wrinkles in my patchwork C++ knowledge. However, the book is written with frequent examples of code to illustrate the points being made. These code sections are very difficult to read because the lines wrap around due to the book page being wider than the Kindle screen. Computer code, of all things, has to be very precise, and the unfortunate formatting harms the readability and prevents the reader from being able to develop a feel for what good code should look like. Still, the book has been helpful in spite of the examples, and I would recommend it.PS - Setting the Kindle to display horizontally and shrinking the font will pretty much eliminate the wrapping problems. This is a good solution if you can tolerate reading the rest of the text in this mode as well. Changing the settings for every example would be tedious at best because the examples are so frequent.

Good, but has typos and mistakes in code samples, sometimes you'll see things like char * str = new char[length + 1]; but then author does delete str; instead of delete [] str; so watch out for those things and read everything carefully! Other than that it's a really great book, if you read this book to the end, I strongly suggest you read Scott Meyers' Effective C++ series (Effective C++, More Effective C++, Effective STL), I personally ordered those 3, and also The Boost C++ Libraries: Generic Programming by Sergei Nakariakov and C++ Templates: The Complete Guide by David Vandevoorde after I read this book.

Robert Lafore is the best C++ teacher ever. I Have used his books since 1993, and would be at a loss without them. I read the chapter then copy his examples and work with them until I get them to run successfully. Finally working the exercises at the end of each chapter puts the iceing on the cake. I have tried other authors, but they don't come near presenting the material as clearly as Robert.

Unlike his popular Barsetshire novels set in England, Trollope decided to write a story about Ireland at the time of The Great Famine, which began in Ireland in 1845.Some of his best writing describes the plight of the Irish who lost everything, including their lives, when the potato crop on which they chiefly lived failed year after year. One of the main characters in the novel, Herbert Fitzgerald of Castle Richmond, does all he can to help his neighbors, but is largely unsuccessful. It comes to light that Herbert Fitzgerald may be illegitimate and the title to Castle Richmond may really belong to his poor cousin Owen Fitzgerald. Sorting out this problem takes up much of the novel. To complicate matters, both Herbert and Owen have fallen in love with and proposed marriage to Lady Clara Desmond. Lady Clara's mother wants her daughter married to the true heir of Castle Richmond and adjoining lands and property and we readers must wait until the end of the story to find out what happens to the Fitzgerald cousins and Lady Clara.It is difficult for the reader to take seriously the problems of the Fitzgeralds when so many Irish people around them are struggling for survival. When Trollope takes us aside and talks to us about The Famine, he seems sincere in his concern for the Irish struggling for survival, but it is the concern of the landed English gentry who thought that creating workhouses and feeding the people corn based gruel satisfied their responsibility to care for a people whose lands they had stolen and whose freedoms they had taken.The reader of this review might find it interesting to go to YouTube and listen to Sinead O'Connor sing her song Famine, or better yet, watch the film version of John B. Keane's play, The Field, much of which can also be found on YouTube.Let there be no mistake; Anthony Trollope is one of my favorite authors. I have read fifteen of his novels and will certainly read more. I consider Castle Richmond to be representative of Trollope's work. Trollope fans, don't miss this one, I feel that's it's one of his very best. I'll never understand why Trollope is not as well known as other authors. The man had such an adept understanding of human nature. As always, there is a galloping good run plot-wise, well-drawn characters, and much to ponder.

What can I say other than when I want to read a soap opera I turn to Trollope. All his characters are full dimensional except for sex. None of his characters ever have sex though they are deeply in love. There's also the inheritance and who shall get it. There's always an extremely virtuous lady in distress. There is the appearance many times of the Jew-broker, the Jewish industrialist turning England into employers and workers with the neuvo riche taking the place in society of the noble gentlemen with incomes from their pitiful but loyal tenants and riding the foxhunts to actually trying to find another income to support their elegant attire and habits. This one is typical. But once you start you can't put it down till the abrupt end when he ties everything together.

Other readers have enjoyed this novel but it rather left me cold. You could do worse, but overall this story although competent feels forced and plot driven to me. It lacked humor, was not wholly credible, and did not compel attention. The insights and vignettes about the famine are harrowing, but seem to run in parallel as a mere coincidence to the story of the named characters, who could well have been set in another place or decade.

YET ONCE MORE AN ENTHRALLING STORY OF FAMILY TIES AND VESTED INTERESTS WHICH COULD AND WOULD HAVE HAD MOST TRAGIC EFFECTS. AS WITH ALL OTHER WORKS BY TROLLOPE, I VERITABLY COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. THE STORY IS SO FOREIGN TO US, THE COMMON HONEST FOLK WHO INHABIT THIS PLANET NOW, THAT THAT WHICH THESE PRECIOUSLY DATED CHARACTERS SAY AND FEEL IS A TRUE SOURCE OF AWE AND WONDER. WELCOME BE THEY WHO BRING THOSE FAR GONE TIMES BACK TO US SO VIVIDLY, THUS ENGAGING US INEXTRICABLY WITH THEIR OWN FATE. DON'T MISS THIS ONE CASTLE TALE!!!

Quite possibly my favorite of the many Trollope novels I have read. I was enthralled from the beginning and unable at any time to predict the outcome. Excellently drawn characters as usual, but also an interesting and riveting plot. Trollope waxes a little too long in his descriptions of the Irish potato famine, but at least it makes an interesting backdrop for his novel. I thoroughly enjoyed this one, beginning to end.

A powerful, powerful book! The Irish potato famine in a major player in this story, very interesting and very moving, and the main characters are very interesting and very moving as well, especially Owen Fitzgerald, a character I will never forget. This book stirred me emotionally as no other Trollope book has, and I've read many of them and loved many of them. But this one is in a class of its own. Incidentally, the father-and-son Mollett team provides some delicious humor to give the reader a break from the strong emotion produced by the telling of the potato famine. The portraits of Irish servants were wonderfully rendered--I could see and hear them, and I loved them.

If you like Trollope this one is good. I wish there had been more of the famine. Read the Black Prophet for a better idea of the goings on then.

Considering the number of books available there seem to be very few that covered developing a complete client-side application. Books seem to cover one aspect of Web development such as: HTML, XML, Javascript, etc. The vast majority seem to cover ASP, ASP.NET, and JSP. That wasn't what I was looking for.Doing Web Development starts at the very begining, with an introduction to the Internet, discusses designing for the web (can be applied to any software design), writing HTML, and continues with many, if not most, of the current tools used in Web development today.The exercises ("Try It") build on each other and allow you to use what you've already done in the next lesson. If you didn't do so well on a "try It" or you want to skip around in the text, the source code can be downloaded from the Apress website. You do not need any special development environment, such as Frontpage, since it is suggested that you learn the syntax by typing for yourself as a form of re-enforced learning. Any text editor will do. With that said you may want another, more detailed, source for any topic you want to cover in depth. Reference material is also handy for various topics. Ms. Kurata presents many of the key elements for each topic but more information is needed if you want to take full advantage of a feature.Don't take what I've said about the things that Doing Web Development doesn't contain as this book being a waste of time. On the contrary. It's an excellent book if you're interested in being exposed to the current trends in client-side Web development. I have chosen to delve fully into the Bosch series...all 23 and counting. It will take awhile but as I dig into this persona, I can't help but feel Connelly has given his character a solid, real ( well, as real as fiction can get), texture....warts and all. I am reading them sequentially to follow the timeline of Harry's perslnal/professional life. Next up: The Concrete Blonde...sounds intriguing...recommend highly this series.

The Black Ice by Michael Connelly"Black Ice" is a particularly seductive and dangerous concoction of coke, heroin and PCP manufactured in Mexico and shipped through our very porous southern border. Harry Bosch gets pulled into the drug underworld while investigating the death of a dealer. He gets some information from LAPD drug enforcement officer Calexico Moore. Before we know it, Moore has gone AWOL and then is discovered in a motel room with his head blown off in an apparent suicide.Or is it murder? And is the LAPD going to cover it up in order to save face? And how is Bosch going to solve at least one murder at the request of Lt. "Ninety-eight" Pounds in order to get the solve statistic above 50%?And what about Calexico's sultry wife; is Bosch going to do anything with his weirdly unrequited fascination for her?And what about Teresa Corazon, who is knocking boots with Bosch and is trying to get a promotion to permanent Medical Examiner? Will Bosch make it out of this book with an intact relationship?And how do the deaths of a dealer, Moore and another LAPD homicide officer all tie together with "Black Ice"?This is the second Bosch book. Connelly keeps us watching all the balls as they fly through the air. Bosch comes across as the iconoic tough loner with a heart of gold, committed to seeing justice done and truth uncovered, even, though, he doesn't necessarily want the law to interfere with his investigation or truth to be revealed if it means that a widow may lose her pension.The story was entertaining and kept me turning the pages.

The crime, if it is one, is puzzling. Did narcotics officer Calexico Moore commit suicide by shooting himself with a shotgun? The physical difficulty of even doing in one’s self like that is daunting. Harry Bosch gets this case along with another one, seemingly unrelated at first. It involves a dead body found by a dumpster identified only as Juan Doe #67. Moore left a wife and Bosch often reflects how beautiful she is. Lucky for Bosch he has a contact in the coroner’s office, one Teresa Corazon. She an attractive woman, available, and soon they are sharing some pillow talk at Harry’s cottage. Wonder if she’s whispering sweet details of the autopsies? Even worse, did Bosch fantasize about Moore’s wife during all this? Bosch’s cases involve the drug traffic and require him to make a trip to Mexico where one of the most powerful drugs is something called black ice. It’s being made down there somewhere and somehow gets across the border in large quantities. Once he is south of the border, Bosch gets involved in various activities with Mexican police authorities, even taking time to see a bull fight. This kind of plot movement is a bit unusual for author Michael Connelly and seems to dilute the momentum of the story. The most redeeming feature of this book is the surprise ending. I was tempted to give up the book earlier but I’m glad I persevered.

Connelly expertly grabs the reader's attention in a few pages then begins an intriguing and compelling story that belongs in the first rank of the noir genre in the modern era. With all due respect to Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett, Connelly weaves a tale that rivals their best work. The novel begins with a corpse and balances the storytelling with a corpse at the end. What happens inbetween is storytelling of the highest order.

I first learned about Bosch from the Amazon Prime show (free plug Amazon!). Often when I go back and read the source books of show I like I am disappointed because they are often very different (I'm looking at you, Bones and Justified!) However Black Ice, the first Harry Bosch novel, felt very familiar to me. Yes there were some differences, but they made sense story wise, like moving the timeline up 20 years, merging plots of two books, combining characters as needed.I was also glad that reading the books wasn't a retread of the show. I definitely feel like I can enjoy the books, and enjoy the show as well.

"The Black Ice" is the second novel of the Harry Bosch series and I really enjoyed this book more than "Black Echo", the first novel of the series. This book was amazing! I couldn't put it down.In this novel, Harry Bosch,(the detective)is looking into the apparent suicide of a fellow officer who had been investigating the appearance of a new drug on the street scene called "black ice." Superiors want the investigation wrapped up as soon as possible, but the more Bosch digs, the more mysteries he finds that lead him south of the border for the final confrontation. This was an excellent and multi-layered story, unpeeling like layers of an onion. Connelly is an excellent storyteller, and he is patient enough to let the story develop at its own pace, with believable characters and a well designed plot.The ending has a real twist, that I didn't even see coming.For anyone that loves reading Mystery-Suspense-Thrillers...don't miss out on this one. This book was amazing.

Micheal Connelly catches the essence of what it is to be a cop. In an entertaining way. If you like mystery and crime books he is one of the best. The books lead into each other so I suggest reading them in chronological order. However they are just as entertaining if read out of order. But there are references to previous characters and events in the previous books. I started with the Burning Room 2014, following with the first book, the Black Echo 1992. Since I have been reading them in order. Either way the series is very entertaining. Highly recommended.
