there are many books on the satipatthana sutta. however most are very much a focused interpretation of the sutta in light of a single teachers ideas about it. they may for example only focus on breathing or another of the practices and only vaguely touch on everything else in the sutta. some of these are wonderful books that surely can lead one to nibbana. but i have been searching for one that details the whole sutta as there's a lot more to it than just a couple of practices.bhante covers everything from start to finish. it is still colored with his own interpretation of the sutta but it's not even possible to write a commentary on a sutta without personal interpretation and he sticks to fairly traditional explanations, keeping it largely impersonal. my only critiques are:1. that he could have included the sutta itself but at least it's a widely available sutta. just web search "satipatthana" and you'll have no problem finding it. and2. that he doesn't give a definitive answer too the question of how many of the exercises you are supposed too practice and when to do them. there are a ton of exercises in the sutta and i have yet to see an author explain this problem (although i imagine analayo covers it in "satipatthana")! the wikipedia page on the satipatthana sutta gives these options:"Single-focused, successive and simultaneous practices:There are a variety of ways that one could use the methods described in the Satipaṭṭhāna Sutta including: 1.Focus on a single method. The method most written about in the English language is that of mindfulness of breath. 2.Practice the various methods individually in succession. 3.Maintain breath mindfulness as a primary object while using other methods to address non-breath stimuli. 4.Practice multiple methods either in tandem or in a context-driven manner."i would add to option three that there are other options of what to pick as the primary object (it doesn't have to be the breath if one is using this interpretation, for example one could use the modes of deportment as the primary object) and then use the other methods to address whatever else arises that is not the primary object.as is typical for the author he puts everything in very easily understood wording and easily digested logic.he talks you through how to use the methods found in the sutta to see impermanence, suffering, and not self in your own life, day by day. if you follow his instructions carefully and earnestly you will start to see light shining through the cracks in the walls that make up reality. and who knows, maybe this will lead you to full on nibbana!one note: on page 96 bhante writes "Remember that you do want to die with anger". knowing enough about buddhism i'm 99.9999% sure he meant "Remember that you do NOT want to die with anger". just so everyone is clear on that point. it would be VERY bad for the path to deliberately die with anger. we are supposed to make great efforts to die without anger.update: i contacted the publisher and they confirmed it is an error that will be fixed in later editions.

I am new to mindfulness. A recent trip to Myanmar and the death of my parent made me think deeper about life, about purpose and about myself. I wasn't really seeking mindfulness or buddhism perse. Its more like I went on a trip and did some tourist activities and then realized I really liked what I saw and heard. So I came back to the States and wanted to read more. Basically, I was looking at a beginner-intermediate book (not so beginner that its like those "mindfulness for dummies" books but something that was deeper and would take you through a journey of learning)He explains everything well, which is exactly what I needed. I do wish there was a bit of history in it. I would like to know more about the life of Buddha (maybe one chapter?). The book goes right into mindfulness.In terms of mindfulness itself: it really is written in plain-English. I like how it tells you EXACTLY what sitting, walking and sleeping meditation is and what actions/behaviors you have to focus on when you are doing it.I read through it really slowly and practice it everyday now because he writes in a very encouraging way. For example, he mentions how folks who try lotus position may find it very difficult the first time around and he talks about how you should persevere. It took him a while too even though he was meditating (in another position) for decades!This was a great starting place for getting into mindfulness. As you progress and become more intermediate, it serves as a great reminder (through re-reading) of your foundation.

This book is very, very good. You don't have to be an expert and/or even a Buddhist to benefit from this book. Anybody can use these techniques. The key is that they are "GROUNDING" techniques to help get you out of your head and/or get you out of the world. Get you back into your body. Amazing, ancient techniques. Not hard at all. It covers, basically, everything in Buddhism but also you "Do" these techniques. Anyway, if you don't like this stuff, don't bother. Myself, I love this stuff.Chuck H.

Whether you approach Buddhism as a religion, a path for meditation, or a philosophy, you will find something of value in this book. I am a list-maker, and there were plenty of lists here - e.g. the 8 steps of Buddha's Path, the 4 noble truths, and the 7 factors of enlightenment. Basic help gained from the book included more understanding of meditation on the breath, staying in the present moment, and the importance of the concept of impermanence.

This is an excellent overview of the Satipatthana Sutta. All of the "Plain English" books are highly recommended. Bhante G has the ability to communicate in ways that all can understand. If you would like a more in-depth treatment of this sutta I recommend "Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization" by Analayo. To get a basic understanding start with Bhante G and then go to Analayo for a more scholarly treatment. Both are excellent.

Clearly written by a master and highly evolved teacher. One of the essential guidance books for the practitioner and for those who wish to practice.Highly and warmly recommended.

I downloaded this book for free on my kindle in exchange for my honest review. I have been curious about the Ketogenic diet and have downloaded other books talking about the benefits. This ebook, however, gives a short and sweet introduction to the Ketogenic diet and dives right into different recipes. Some of them are so simple to follow! I am no chef, but I do try to experiment with the ingredients I have in the kitchen to make a tasty (enough) meal. The one I am most excited to try is the tofu scramble. One thing I am marking down a star for is there is (presumably) an error in at least one of the recipes and it suggests using whey protein. Last I checked, vegans don't use whey protein because it comes from milk. But! The one thing that I like best about this ebook is that you can go back to the beginning and press on different links to the different recipes. I am going to keep this ebook in my library for easy access to the different easy to follow healthy recipes.

Great book on Ketogenic diet, this book explains how you can eat vegan and follow the diet. It has a 15 day meal plan, with lots of variety of dishes. I especially like the Keto Breakfast cereal, so tasty and great way to start your morning.

The e-book consists of an actual diet plan including a lot of vegan recipes using coconut milk, coconut flour, avocados, and a lot of other very health ingredients. Recipes are simple to complex and cover beverages to desserts. If you are looking for some tasty recipes to add to your diet, whether you follow this plan or not, this e-book could be a great addition. The only true downside is the e-book can only be read with the Kobo viewer either on a compatible device or laptop. It is not compatible with Kindle devices and the laptop viewer is a challenge to use. For me this is a real problem as I use my smartphone and Kindle in the kitchen a lot. This book caters to a very unique niche- the Vegan Ketogenic diet. I have sometimes wondered if its possible to do a Keto diet as a vegetarian and this book shows that you can. However, it will be more challenging than it would be for a meat eater. The recipes look intriguing in here. I didn't try them out but I flipped through to see the variety.My biggest concern is the strange/rare ingredients listed on many of the recipes. I would not know where to find things like "hemp hearts". It would be helpful to see an explanation of where to find these things.However, if you can track down the ingredients, this could be a very valuable resource.

I have been successful with weight loss using the standard Atkins type keto diet (20g carb) and was hoping to find some unique inspiration here. NOPE. I downloaded using the Kindle Unlimited and read the recipes on my laptop and have stopped a few pages in.NO CARB COUNTS.... what the heck? Without basic nutritional info including carb counts/fiber/net carbs, you can't successfully have a ketogenic recipe book. Lame. I've been doing this long enough to know the basic carb amounts on the standard items but come on, such lazy writing which leads me to suspect this is just a cut and paste of recipes off much better sources. If you enjoy sleuthing about and wasting time/money on recipes you could find for free on websites, this ebook is for you. If you want to just cut out grains and junk and still loose weight compared to the standard Western diet, this is for you. Otherwise PASS. I suspect the other high star reviews are from people who don't understand keto and who want to keep up a high star rating for free product.

This was a very interesting book, coming from a vegetarian who's interested in losing weight. I was bamboozled so that you don’t have to be! And yes, Sam, I am contacting Amazon about this farce as well.

This book is beautiful. It is about family, about how you impart wisdom to the next generation, what it means to embrace America while holding on to your culture and tradition, all with lively humor and love. It is about three generations of a Mexican American family living in Southern California looking at their past, facing death, and still trying to make sense of this crazy mixed up world that is both magnificent and crushing.Many memorable novels have characters who leave a lasting impression. The protagonist Big Angel has an immense presence, yet he is willing to admit his frailties. Perhaps it is because he is looking death in the face. No matter, he is a man with a broad range that once you hear his voice and learn his secrets, you will never forget him. All the while, getting to know his family will be the most fun you have ever had without the drama of your own.Big Angel had me when he was looking for signs of his dearly departed mother or his son.“When he was a boy, Mother had taught him that a rainbow was a bridge where angels walked down from heaven. In Spanish, it was an arco iris. This was so much more lovely than English, like the name of a butterfly or hummingbird or daisy. He felt smug about this: go, Spanish! Sunflower: girasol, he thought.”I am deeply in love with the Spanish language, which I don’t speak. If you love the language, and for many other reasons, you are in for a real treat with THE HOUSE OF BROKEN ANGELS.

In his vivid multi-generational tale of a Mexican-American family, Luis Alberto Urrea offers up fallen angels (husbands, fathers, sons, brothers) and caregiving saints (wives, mothers, daughters, sisters). At times, I had trouble remembering the identities of third or even second generation characters, a confusion exacerbated by their multiple nicknames. And, even in context, the meaning of some Spanish expressions eluded me. Despite these gaps, I was drawn into the wild ride of life events and complicated relationships among the de la Cruz kin. Some are common to all extended families, others unique to a culture proud of itself yet shamed by a society that regards them as “less than” their white counterparts. Overall, the book has the zest, orneriness, kindness, rage, and spirit of a wild and crowded fiesta.

I really want just to say “Buy this book now and read it tonight”. Almost everything has been said about this wonderful novel, but let me add this: There are passages in which the language is so wonderful, you just want to cut it out of the page and chew it up. Don’t be discouraged by the death of the patriarch. This book will make you want to live bigger than you’re living right now.

This is a very good novel. The events happen now and take place over a few days, mostly in San Diego and Baja California. A huge Mexican- American family has encounters, comic and sad. You may want to look up a few words printed in Spanish, but only a few.There is food, sexual flirtation, insults, comedy, and a touch of modern references. If you have a stereotype of Mexican-Americans in your head, this will change it. There is enough variety to keep a reader pleasantly off-balance. I will read more of this writer.

“The House of Broken Angels” is a book about a family. A BIG family. The head of the family is Miguel Angel De La Cruz, AKA “Big Angel” AKA “Flaco.” He is a sort of Atlas figure, carrying his family’s whole world on his shoulder, but as the novel opens, that world is slipping from his grasp. Big Angel is dying of cancer, and his days—even his hours—are numbered.The novel is a patchwork of stories, wrapped in a collage of characters, tangled up in a web of relationships. There is a plotline that runs through the entire work, but it is almost unnecessary. The author may have included it simply as a respectful nod to the ancient art he has taken up—and that’s fitting: this is a novel very much about respect for what has come before.There are a lot of characters, and at first, I found it intimidating trying to keep up, but eventually, I just relaxed and let their stories wash over me. Clearly, the author is sympathetic to readers who might be a bit overwhelmed by the chaos. He does a good job of reminding you at intervals who these people are, and also reassures the reader that if you get confused at times, it’s okay: Even the characters themselves don’t always know if the guy that just walked in the door is a brother, cousin, uncle, nephew . . . or a complete stranger hoping to sneak in and snag a free cup of instant coffee in all the confusion.The reader, of course (at least this reader), feels like that stranger, at first. It is the art of this novel that by-and-by, the reader begins to feel like family. It’s a marvelous transformation.Hey, Sis, pass the condensed milk and tell me another story about our Abuelo.
