I had never heard of Rudy Francisco before buying this book. (I admit it; I like poetry and the cover intrigued me.) As a sexagenarian I am at least a couple of generations older.And to my senescent ears his poetry is filled with the vitality, confidence, and hyperacuity of youth. He already has a talent for language and symbolism, however, that is typical of the legendary maestros of poetry, language, and music. His images are simply stated but vivid and tangible. He has that rare knack to stimulate all of the senses through words alone.Poetry is power and his has it in abundance. “It [the page] just sits there, with a mouth full of entitlement, staring at you and wondering why it is still not a masterpiece.†But it is a masterpiece, and that is the power of the poetic word when it's rendered as skillfully as this.There is definitely a depth to his work. “Gather your mistakes, rinse them with honesty and self-reflection…†that is seasoned and full of insight.“I hope I haven’t already driven past my greatest moments.†He hasn’t, for sure. And if you like poetry you shouldn’t pass by this collection.A very good read.
I will begin by stating that I have never been a big fan of poetry. Several times in my life I have heard a poem I enjoyed and thought "this is it, I'm going to finally understand the love of poetry" only to realize I still did not when I read more of that author's writings. THIS IS IT. I saw a video of Rudy reciting "Complainers" on Facebook, ordered Helium immediately and have finally understood why people find poetry so moving. His writings are raw and honest but not complicated or pretentious. His metaphors are expressed in such a way that you can relate to them without losing effectiveness in trying to decipher them. I won't lie: tears came to my eyes more than once reading this book - sometimes at a poem with only a handful of lines. He really does have a way with words. If you love poetry- you'll love this book. If you don't love poetry- you'll love this book. Really I'm saying that you should just get this book, read it with an open heart and let his beautiful words sink in.
The emotions drawn are raw and powerful. I could literally feel the words in these poems. Some will make you laugh, some will make you cry. They give the reader a lot to ponder, and a perspective perhaps not previously considered. Worth the read!
The personification, metaphors, raw emotions and relatable experiences truly stood out to me. It felt like I was reading my own life story in third person. Rudy really put the emotions I felt into words. I wish it was longer. Would definitely recommend this to anyone and I will be buying more of his books.
Rudy is the definition of an artist. Each page drips with emotion; it is one of those rare books that you have to read, digest, repeat. This book made me feel no so alone after losing a 5 year relationship. There is something magical about him, and his writing. If you've ever been melancholy this book will leave you falling asleep with a smile on your face and a poem in your mind. He makes me want to lose my mind for my heart.
I came across Rudy Francisco’s poetry watching Button Poetry’s YouTube channel...and when I heard him he was amazing...so when Helium was released it was a no brainer that I would purchase this...and he did not disappoint. Glad I made this purchase!!
I'm not a poetry person, but I loved this. I saw him on Jimmy Fallon and to say it was amazing was/is a stunning understatement. This should be required reading for all adults. Wouldn't hurt teenagers. Every man I've ever met should read this.
I think I became spoiled, having seen this poet perform so many times in person! I bought the book and found poems I knew and could recite from hearing them before but they felt different as I had gotten used to the poet reciting them aloud. He's a powerful performer and a powerful writer, but read the book then buy a ticket (or several). You can't capture lightning in a bottle, you have to experience the storm.
